We are from Taiwan!
From the16th century, Taiwan was once known to the world as the “ILHA Formosa” (“Beautiful Island” in Portuguese)!
Our beautiful hometown, Kaohsiung city, Taiwan (R.O.C)
But the development of economy & the traffic, somehow make our beautiful Taiwan polluted. It happens all over the world too.
Take energy consumption for industry, commerce and agriculture in Taiwan for example: Imported energy sources, like oil and coal, increases year by year.
Energy consumption Details in Taiwan in 2004
• Energy consumption: 4.2% increased• electricity needs: 5% increased • petroleum needs: 4.7% increased
Energy source distribution in Taiwan in 2005
51%
33%

coal
gas
nuke power
water power
Energy consumption in Taiwan in 2005
• Slightly decrease in imported coal, but huge increase in all other energy sources
• Liquid gas imported: 23.2% increased
• Crude oil imported: 13% increased
• Petroleum total consumption: 2,949,3200 liters: that is 10.6% increase than 2004
• 98.2% of the energy consumed is imported, only 1.8% energy is from Taiwan.
What will the life in year 2040 be?
• We should all be happy & healthy in our fifties, right?
• But according to what we’ve learned at school, and all information we’ve got from all the media, we see terrible things that may happen to us then, like the worst nightmares.
Energy consumption all over the world may cause air pollution, and air pollution may cause “greenhouse effects”.
“Greenhouse effect” may make the temperature on the earth go higher. Icebergs in the north or the south poles will begin to melt.
The water could destroy many island countries in the world. Many places in this world map could be disappear forever!
The weather may change dramatically just like it was in the movie “THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW”. Maybe we’ll get back to another glacier period……
Or, it may just become hotter & hotter. Water may dry out, or be
polluted.
In the end, more than 10 billions of people in this world will simply have no enough water to use at the year 2040.
The weather change may cause famine,
And famine can cause riots, or even…… wars!!
Also, at school, we learnt that each day around the world, more and more rain forests are cut down or burned for different reasons.
There won’t be enough rain forests to make clean air for us to breathe in the future. We may get lung diseases.
And the gas that protect us from the radiation from the sun may also be gone. We may get skin cancer easily.
We don’t want to see the things that happen in the E-mail “A letter from 2070” happen to us as well……
So, as APCC Junior Ambassadors around the world, what can we do together, to avoid the bad days to
come?
BCs connect the world!
Tell everybody what we’re worrying about here! Maybe we can prevent things from getting worse, if we stand together & show our voices to the world!
40 years later, our next generations should also have the same rights, same chances to share the same beautiful memories like we do.
Not only for ourselves, but also we hope that people all over the world are safe, happy, and healthy at the year 2040!
At that time and ever after, we’ll all celebrate having them all around the
earth together!
This is the end of “Year 2040” brought by Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Thank Yo
u for listening!
