It is also necessary for students to have demonstrated competency in basic mathematics.

COURSE CONTENT: The Year 12 Chemistry course gives to its students a basic understandingof the subject and the general principles which form its foundations. Although it is a completecourse in itself, it does build toward NCEA Level 3 chemistry for those who will take it further. This is a theory based course, with some practical work.

Students can be assessed in 7 Achievement Standards, 3 internal and 4 external (exams). They are:Internal 2.1 Carry out qualitative analysis (3 credits)

2.2 Carry out acid-base volumetric analysis (3 credits)2.3 Solve chemical related problems (2 credits)

External 2.4 Describe the nature of structure and bonding in different substances (4 credits)2.5 Describe the structural formulae and reactions of compounds containing

selected organic functional groups (4 credits)2.6 Describe principles of chemical reactivity (5 credits)2.7 Describe oxidation-reduction reactions (3 credits)

QUALIFICATIONS AIMED FOR: 24 Level 2 credits are available through this coursewhich build towards your NCEA Level 2 certificate.

THIS COURSE LEADS TO: Year 13 Chemistry If a student expects to take a course involving Biology or

Physics in the future, they should take Year 12 Chemistry.

If you have any intention of doing a science subject atUniversity, chemistry is very often needed. In order to douniversity chemistry, Year 13 chemistry is necessary inalmost all situations.

40

Year 13 NCEA LEVEL 3 CHEMISTRY

COSTS: Students would be well advised to buy a lab manual at the beginning of the year(cost approximately $22). Students will keep this lab manual. An optional supplementary text is available ($10).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Unless there are exceptional circumstances, students need to havegained at least 16 credits in NCEA Level 2 Chemistry in order to do this course. The coursebuilds upon this base.

COURSE CONTENT: Level 3 Chemistry is an academic subject with a large emphasis onpractical work.Topics covered in Level 3 are:

1. Atomic Structure and Thermochemistry2. Redox3. Organic Chemistry4. Aqueous Solutions

The subject areas are similar to NCEA Level 2 Chemistry, but the scope and depth ofunderstanding is much greater.

ASSESSMENT: Students can be assessed in seven Achievement Standards, two internal andfive external (in exams in November). The Achievement Standards are:Internal 3.1 Carry out practical investigation (4 credits)

3.2 Perform a titration (2 credits)External 3.3 Redox (3 credits)

3.4 Properties of Particles and Thermo Chemistry (5 credits)3.5 Organic (5 credits)3.7 Aqueous solutions (5 credits)

QUALIFICATIONS AIMED FOR: 24 credits are available in this course, and they buildtowards your Level 3 NCEA certificate.

THIS COURSE LEADS TO: If students are to gain qualifications at University in otherScience subjects, they need to think very seriously about taking Chemistry in the Seventh Form,as Chemistry is a University pre-requisite of many other Science courses. It is also a qualificationhighly sought after by employers.
