new scale from 9 to 1, with 9 being the highest grade.

• New GCSE content will be more challenging.• Fewer grade 9s will be awarded than A*s. • English language, English literature and Maths
were the first to be graded from 9 to 1 in 2017.
• Another 20 subjects will have 9 to 1 grading in 2018, with most others following in 2019.
• During this transition, students will receive a mixture of letter and number grades.
• The new grades are being brought in to signal that GCSEs have been reformed and to better differentiate between students of different abilities.

• No controlled assessment (i.e. 100% exam) in English, Geography and History.
• Maths skills assessed in Science (20%), pupils will no longer be given a formula sheet they will have to learn equations.

From now on, all pupils who fail to have achieved a grade 4 or better in English or

Condition 1
To guarantee a place at Blue Coat Sixth Form, all students must hold a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grades 9-5 including a Grade 5 in English and Maths.
Condition 2
In addition students must achieve at least a Grade 6 in the subjects that they wish to study in order to guarantee a place on their chosen courses.
Condition 3For the specific subject combination of more than one Science studied together (e.g. Biology
with Chemistry), students must also achieve a Grade 6 in Maths in order to guarantee their chosen study programme.

the new grading structure. Achieving the above criteria guarantees students a place at Blue Coat Sixth Form,
however in such uncertain times we are happy to discuss the results of individual students who don’t quite meet
the thresholds for entry, but we cannot guarantee them a place.

Attendance is one of the most crucial aspects in the progress of pupils, and as a school we expect all pupils to achieve at least 96% attendance.
Must achieve 96% attendance, in at least one of the three terms throughout Year 11, in order to attend the Leavers’ Dinner.Obviously, long standing medical conditions and extreme circumstances will be taken into account. The three term dates are below:Term 1: 4th September 2017 – 19th December 2017
