CHOOSING A QUALIFICATION PATHWAY
CIE - Cambridge NCEA Mixed pathway CIE / NCEA
CIE Majority of Year 11 students choose this An international qualification Assessment mostly by external examinations Some internally assessed subjects Given a grade from A* to F Offers full range of traditional school subjects Includes Foreign Languages Leads to AS / A Levels in Years 12 & 13 which
gather UCAS points for university entrance Can change to NCEA Level 2 in Year 12
Subjects divided into standards, each worth credits Some internal assessment during year in all subjects Some subjects all internal. Most subjects some external. New Zealand Qualification Offers traditional school subjects. Also offers practical,
hands-on, technology and employment focused subjects Level 1 certificate earned when 80 credits gained (plus

In Year 11, you may be able to take one subject from the other pathway only if it is not offered in your main pathway
You must ask permission from Mr Goodyer if you wish to take a mixed pathway. See him to sign your option sheet before you hand it in.
CHOOSING YOUR ENGLISH COURSE Compulsory in Years 11 & 12 Literacy needed from Years 11 and 12. NCEA a minimum of 10 credits Level 1 and Level 2 ( 5 reading and 5 writing). CIE a minimum of a D grade in IGCSE and an E grade in AS. Year 11 in CIE Pathway: IGCSE English Literature 11ELC IGCSE English Language 11ENC NCEA Level 1 ESOL 11ESL NCEA Level 1 English 11ENG
Year 11 in NCEA Pathway: NCEA Level 1 English 11ENG NCEA Level 1 English for Literacy 11ENL NCEA Level 1 ESOL 11ESL All continue to Year 12 courses which can satisfy University Entrance Literacy
CIE ENGLISH COURSES in Year 11
11ELC: Literature Need strong academic
background in English. Study poetry, prose , drama Analyse & evaluate texts Write academic essays Need to do well in exams

Compulsory in Year 11. Numeracy from Year 11 NCEA minimum of 10 credits at Level 1 CIE minimum of D grade in IGCSE Students taking the NCEA Pathway: NCEA Level 1 Mathematics 11MAT NCEA Level 1 Numeracy Mathematics 11MNU Students taking the CIE Pathway: IGCSE Mathematics 11MTC NCEA Level 1 Mathematics 11MAT Accelerated students choose: AS Mathematics 1 year course 12MTC or 11MPU AS Mathematics 2 year course 11MAC
Mathematics - 11MTC or 11MAT For students who hope to continue studying
Mathematics in Year 12 either CIE AS or NCEA Level 2
For those with over 40% in the Year 10MAT end of year exam
CIE students - IGCSE Mathematics (Extended) NCEA students - NCEA Level 1 Mathematics
Year 11 Numeracy Mathematics:
Aim of course is to gain Numeracy credits for University Entrance
For students who find Mathematics challenging and do not plan to continue it in Year 12. Does NOT lead to Year 12 Maths.
Leads to NCEA Level 1 Mathematics Made up of internally assessed Achievement
Standards and three Unit standards

3 or 4 OPTION SUBJECTS?
FIVE subject course: 3 option subjects Most students will choose 3 option subjects SIX subject course: 4 option subjects To be considered for this you will need to get an
average of 75% in the four core Year 10 exams (10ENG, 10MAT, 10SCI, 10SOS) with no mark less than 65%.
Indicate which is your sixth subject - You will drop this subject if you are only allowed to do five subjects after your exam results in November.

Year 11 Sciences NCEA - Level 1 Science Leads to NCEA Level 2 & 3 Biology, Chemistry &/or Physics in Years 12 & 13 CIE IGCSE Biology, Chemistry &/or Physics Continue as AS & A Level Biology, Chemistry &/or Physics in Years 12 & 13 You need > 70% in the Yr 10 end of year Science exam Can only pick 1 or 2 single Sciences in Year 11 unless you are approved to
take 6 subjects and you get > 80% in the Yr 10 Science exam. CIE IGCSE Combined Science Does NOT generally lead to AS single Sciences in Year 12 Leads to IGCSE or NCEA Level 2 Biology, Chemistry &/or Physics which
then continue as AS or NCEA Level 3 in Year 13

The vocational pathway courses (shaded on the Year 11 option sheet)
The vocational pathway starts mainly in Year 12 It offers NCEA credits at Levels 1, 2 and 3 mostly
through unit standards It can also offer industry certificates to provide a
step-up to a tertiary or apprenticeship qualification Many of the standards offered in these courses do
not lead to subjects approved for University Entrance at Level 3
Many of these standards do not offer the opportunity for grades higher than achieved i.e. not merit or excellence

Completing your Option Sheets Must choose one subject from each column Fit English & Maths, three or four option subjects 5 Subject Course: Fit core Phys Ed (11PED) last 6 Subject Course: Indicate your 6th subject which you will drop if only
allowed to take 5. This must be a science if you have chosen 3 sciences. If 2 subjects can only be taken in the same column, select the one you
most want to do then write a note on the option sheet to say you also would like the other subject but it currently clashes.
If you choose a subject not in your main pathway you must see Mr Goodyer, fill in 2 sheets, check the columns
Fill your form in neatly in ink with no alterations or twink Must be signed by parent or guardian Fill in the back returning to school?, career ideas? Accelerated Maths students taking 6 subjects must pick their Maths course
(12MTC or 11MPU), in column 1.
