Aspectra is one of the leading Swiss Application Outsourcing Providers. They offer secure and prov-en solutions for the implementation and operation of business critical IT systems.
“Aspectra was a typical internet start-up in 2000”, says Kaspar Geiser, Managing Director and In-terxion Switzerland’s first customer at the time. In 2009, Aspectra is an independent company that is continuing to grow and develop in today’s chal-lenging market. “Aspectra is not an experimental company. We began with a sound and solid strategy and portfolio and that hasn’t changed. Our mission is and was providing high quality application serv-ices” explains Kaspar.
“Interxion’s high quality of service has met our
developing needs over the years. Significantly, they
take care to ensure consistency in the technical personnel assigned to fulfil
Aspectra’s needs.”
“A car is a car. It takes you from A to B. A server is a server. It is designed to provide a specific serv-ice. A firewall is a firewall. It is designed to block unauthorised access. It is possible to find IT prod-ucts and services that provide for all your needs together. However, Aspectra believes that each application should be dedicated in its use.” Kaspar explains. All Aspectra employees are highly experi-enced in the area of dedicated hosting and applica-tion management.

“We believe in sound and solid technol-ogy and uncomplicated straightforward relationships of mutual trust. One of our most important and long standing relationships is with Interxion Switzer-land. Interxion takes care of our physi-cal security”. In fact Aspectra was In-terxion Switzerland’s first customer. Their relationship began in 2000, when both businesses recognised the mutual benefit of the data market place Interx-ion is offering.
“Aspectra was Interxion Switzerland’s
first customer”
In 2000, as one of the founding staff members, Kaspar Geiser began work-ing for Aspectra as a software engineer. He graduated from the Technikum Win-terthur as an Electrical Engineer HTL. Beginning in 2000, he has steadily ac-quired further responsibilities and has built up his stake in the business. “My interest in software and the IT indus-try was sparked by the development of the Internet in the mid 1990’s and I still need to ‘get technical’ as often as pos-sible”, says Kaspar.

It is currently extremely hectic in and around the Interxion building in Glattbrugg, near Zurich Airport. Dozens of workmen are busy building Zurich 1.3, our new data centre space. Within a few months, we will be in a position to offer almost twice the current level of space, following an investment of 48 million CHF.Roger Lüssi, Operations Manager Interxion (Swit-zerland) AG says: “The additional square metres are important for supporting the growth of Interx-ion. Furthermore, we are also investing heavily in the company and in our business processes so that we can meet the increasing demands of our cus-tomers.”
The new data centre space, which will be launched in phases from January 2010, is being constructed according to Interxion’s unique modular build-out principle. The main benefit is that the additional 2600 m2 will have an improved power usage effi-ciency equipped as standard with advanced power distribution, cooling, alarm and security systems. Interxion is continuing to invest in high availability and ultimate reliability in addition to improved pow-er availability so that they can offer customers both standard and high-power density solutions.

With the expansion of their portfolios for IP based services Swisscom Broad-cast is fulfilling the rapidly growing demand for “prepared“ radio and TV broadcasting platforms for Mobile TV, IP or Web TV.
The trend towards consumption of radio and TV programmes as well as Videos on Demand (VoD) services over the Internet has increased in recent years. This means that not only cable and satellite service providers neces-sarily have to deal with this issue. Also broadcasters, Internet service provid-ers (ISPs), fixed and mobile telecom operators and even large corporations and individual Web service providers are required to launch and operate such services.
The core product of Swisscom Broadcast
is the “TV / Radio Capturing Service”.
Swisscom Broadcast provides their B2B customers high quality radio and TV streams ready to be used on the In-ternet for Mobile TV, IP or Web TV. The services involves the reception and preparation of radio and television sig-nals suitable for IP services in accord-ance with the format set by the service provider.
The customized channels are provided to customers at Interxion in Zurich. The site was chosen because Interx-ion, as the “market place” for new services, is optimally networked and a variety of potential providers already have a presence at Interxion.
Additionally, Swisscom Broadcast pro-vides a multi-tenant wholesale product “Web-/ Mobile TV end to end platform including options for VoD and adver-tisement insertion“.

Tips & Tricks
Data rooms typically have about three times more cooling capacity available than is necessary. How-ever, there are still many hot spots. This is caused by cool air not reaching the equipment but instead being vented through cable openings, openings in and under the cabinets or incorrectly placed perforated floor tiles. This in turn leads to increased power con-sumption, equipment wearing out more quickly and decreased hardware reliability.

Blanking Panel
Data cabinets not only provide mechanical support for the equipment, but also prevent hot air from returning to the air intake. By sealing off the open spaces between computer equipment with blanking panels, this air recirculation (see drawing above) can be eliminated. One can further improve air distribu-tion by sealing off cable openings and optimizing the number and location of perforated floor tiles.
