Dear Parents

Rock Challenge

Once again we’re taking the dance and performance world by

storm with our outstanding contribution to UK Rock

challenge. Eighty students are involved and have been

absolutely brilliant - not only in their own performance, but

making it such an enjoyable day by supporting other schools

too in a very positive manner. We achieved nine awards of

excellence for their showcase performance as a Premier

Team. These include concept, drama, soundtrack,

performance skill, visual enhancement, set design, stage crew,

video and cultural awareness. We are looking forward with

confidence to the competition itself in Portsmouth Guildhall

on Saturday 27th April.

U15 boys’ Basketball success: Congratulations to the year 10 boys’ Basketball team for achieving the Cup and League double for the 2nd year running. After their win against Calthorpe Park on Monday to win the District Cup they followed it up by winning their last league game of the season against Salesian a day later. It has been a fantastic season and the boys remain undefeated, well done to the whole squad. What an amazingly talented group of young men. As ever, thank you so much to all of the parents who

have come to support at their matches and for helping out with the transport at short notice. It is very much appreciated.

After half term, local primary school pupils will be receiving reading help from a dozen excited Yateley

Sixth Form students. We have been hard at work coordinating our students returning to their own

former schools to help with early years reading. We have quite a time table set up at Westfields, Charles

Kingsley and Cranford Park schools. I know our students will be amazing, and I also know they are really

excited to help the children studying there. A few talk in lofty terms about witnessing linguistic

acquisition in action, others about giving back to the schools they valued so much. However, really we

know they just want to get stuck into Biff, Chip and Kipper and their Magic Key adventures and re-live

old times! Happy reading everyone.

I’m delighted to share some major sporting success for Ben Elsey in Year 10. Ben has been selected to

play for the Surrey County U16 Rugby team for 2019/20 season. He attended trials with 136 other boys

from schools and clubs in Surrey and after a morning of positional core skills this number was cut to 70.

Ben then had to do an additional selection for back row players, where they only selected 14 boys. After

an afternoon of playing matches a final decision was made to select a squad of 36. He will now train

every Monday in March and April and will hopefully get selected to play in U16 County matches next

season.

Excellence – Dr Case writes - Congratulations to the following Year 11 students who received the excellence award this week; Hannah Barratt Amy Chau, Ellie Darlington, Eleanor Fegan, Molly Hunt, Amelia Oxlade and Grace Fegan for gaining the most achievement points. The message for all of year 11, including the excellence group, is that you have a real opportunity to make a difference to your examination results in the summer, as yet it is a ‘blank sheet of paper’. Please remember, Good is the

enemy of great - Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard. Our students are talented and

hardworking…. Imagine what your results will look like if you use the opportunities available to you and make excellent use of your half term break.

It just remains for me to wish you a happy and safe half term break. This may be a chance for some students to address any missing work or correct uniform issues. Hopefully for all it will be a chance to rest and recuperate. I look forward to seeing the students return on Monday 25th February which will be a week B and wish all those on the Ski Trip a fantastic experience and a safe journey home.

Student star of the week. Isabelle Cole in Year 10 is the only student Mr

Glendinning has taught who has completed the entire National Cipher

Challenge. In previous years there were eight problems; this year they

extended it to ten. Isabelle (as a solo participant) has repeatedly outscored

both our further maths classes (working as teams) and Mr Glendinning

(although this was the first year he’d got past week 6 so perhaps he is not

the highest benchmark)!

Yours sincerely.

Paul German

Harry Potter Studio Tour

On Monday, Yr13 students on the BTEC Creative Digital Media Production course went on a trip to the Harry Potter studios in Leavesdon to carry out production research on the use of costumes, makeup, props, set design and special effects in film making. On the day students were extremely fortunate to be able to speak to some of the members of the actual Art Department/Design team involved in the production of the Harry Potter films and got to ask individuals directly about the processes involved in prop making, story boarding and set design.

The BTEC Creative Digital Media Production students are currently in the process of making their own short, 5 minute films. Despite their films being on a much smaller scale (and budget) than the Harry Potter films, the trip

to the studios provided a valuable insight into the industry and gave them the opportunity to see what their studies in film making could lead to.

NCS Year 11 This Wednesday we had the delight of NCS coming in to speak to Year 11 parents about the NCS experience this

coming Summer for Year 11 students. It was great to see so many parents in attendance.

NCS have been working with Yateley for the past few years and it is a great opportunity for our Year 11 students.

Not only is the cost minimal at £35 for the 3 or 4 week experience, but it also helps towards UCAS University

applications and life skills. Every year we have seen more and more Year 11’s signup and take part, which is

fantastic. All Year 11 have been given the brochure about NCS and the signup for this year, so please do ask your

son/daughter to show you. For further details please visit https://www.ncsyes.co.uk/.

Mr Keeble along with some Sixth Form students who took past last year will be speaking to Year 11 students about

this opportunity in their Year 11 assembly on Friday 1st March.

Y11 Parents’ Information Evening

Parents of Y11 students are warmly invited to join us on Thursday 7 March between 1900-2015 for our popular

Y11 Parents’ Information Evening. The evening begins with a talk in the main hall about how to achieve exam

success by Mr German (Headteacher) and Mr Hill (Raising Standards Leader). Following the main talk in the Hall

from 1930 onwards parents can attend up to three workshops that will help best support their son/daughter in

the coming months.

We look forward to seeing as many parents as possible on the evening; in the past we have been exceptionally

busy! Finally, if you have any questions at all about the evening or any other Year 11 related matter then please

don’t hesitate to contact [email protected].
