ni was born into a picruresque seaside villagg thatbne ever gare thou$t to leaving and ii nowwn in every col'ner of the globe l'*tri is, withoutrubt" a musical phenomenon, one of those rareits whose music defies borders and boundaries -
se music speak to people of all races, alllns, And there is more than ample evidence tomrt such statemenF.
r mzfly al'tists have become the favored compos-f every Olympic broadcast for the past decade?-out Radio City Music Hall for ten dates? Playedre shadow of the Tai Mahal, the Forbidden Citythe Parthenon? Toured China and more thanrt1 other narions? Had a fi special seen in 65rtries by half a billion people, was one of the toprraising a'tists of all time for PBS, and releasedlbecame the #2 best-selling live concefi video?also mounted the #l-ranked concerl tour for
irst half of 1998.
ri is an artist that crosses all demographics in hisnl. Recently he returned to PBS with a new tele-n special, Live At Royat Alberr Hall, Inndon, ing not only a spectacular concert appearanceis historic venue, but also the first glimpse intohmily home in Greece and recording studioorida.
n Records released Etltnicity in February hisalbum and third on Viryin. [rtending the "One
d, One People" philosophy that has been thenark of his career, Ethnicitjt offers an upbeafction of track that pulse with the rhyhms ands of cultures around the globe. Its instrumenta-is equally diverse: from the aboriginal depth ofrustmlian didgeridoo to the haunting tone of thenian duduk - from the Celtic-flavored violin toercussive plunk of the Indian tabla -the albums with international flavor. The melodic sensibil-ttre album is unmistakablyYanni.
ry of the world's cultures and musical genres are:sented on this album. It has alot of ethnic colorL other words, it has ethnicitv." sals Yanni, ticity has to do with race and culture, and - inray I use it for this album - the color and beautymulticultural societ,v. You can be proud of vourage and still be pafi of a world communitv."
for example, is an adapailon of an earlier composi-tion, "secret Vows," fearuring lyrics from longtimefiiend Pamela NtcNeill and brilliantly sung byAlfuedaGerald, a member of Yanni's Tribute tour. Thealbum s final track reflects his own culrural heritagewith a rraditional and very beautifirl Greek island folksong.'Jivaeri."
After a five-year break from touring, Yarmi began anambitious 2003/04 world tour on March l, atMandalay Bay Resort in Las V'egas, feanrring many ofhis new compositions and spotLighting the talents ofsolo virtuoso musicians the world over, along withhis s4nphony orchestra. ftliramar Books pubtishedYanni s autobiography, Yanni In Words, a story thatspans his fascinating and inspirational life from hischildhood in Greece to his college years inMinnesota- to his success as an international super-star. The memoir. written in collaboration with DavidRensin, also includes deeply personal details includ-ing his intense nine-year rJadonship with actressUnda Evans. It became a iliew York Times best-sellerin its first t'eek of release.
"I've been asked to write a book on many occasionsbut I was always focused first and foremost on mymusic and my career," said Yanni. "For the past fewyears I've had more of an oppornrnity ro think deeplyabout life . . . I have tasted and felt so many things inmy life and been welcomed all around the world. Ihave surpassed the wildest dreams I ever had as achild. I thou$t that now was the right time to talkabout it. V,hat better reason to write a book?"
Yanni has always charted a solitary and distinctivepath. A champion swimmer and self-taught pianistwith the $ft of perfect pitch, he left the comfort ofKa\annta, Greece, on the spectacular shores of thedeep blue Mediterran ean, and"then began to fashionhis own kind of American success story later tobecome an international success story.
After graduating from the University of l\{innesotawith a B.A. in psychology, after trading the Greciansunshine for frosty winters, he would seek a life inmusic, though he could not read a note and wrotewholly origrnal works that, then and now, defii cate-gorizing. From the beginning, he operated with asimple creed: afuth in hard work and keeping anopen mind.
Airways commercial. His following album, In MyTime, a gentler collection of piano-focused pieces, was also nominated for a Grammy Award andattained Platinunr status.
ln 1994 Yanni achieved a personal triumph whenhe returned to his Greek homeland and recordedan album at the 2,000-year-old Herod AfficusTheatre in Athens. The result, Yanni Liue At TheAcropolis.would be a sensation. It has almost con-tinuously remained on the charts since its release, sold more than seven million copies worldwide, eanred more than 35 platinum and gold albums, and has risen to become one of the bestsellingmusic videos of all time.
How to follow the unprecedented success of Liue AtT he Auopol i s? By becoming the first major Wesrenartist ever to perform at India's Taj N{ahal and ChinasForbidden Ciry resulting in the multi-platinum albumTdbute. This is an artist who invested millions ofdollars into the project before a single sound wasrecorded, whose oryantanonmounted a near bibli-cal effort with the regional government of UttarPradesh to improve roads and build nvo bridges inorder that the flood plains suruounding the Taj Mahalcould be transformed for three historic concertsbeneath one of the world's greatest wonders. Whileallowing India's citizens to see a musical perfor-mance in front of the country's signature strucfure,TNbate ultimately led to three million dollars indonations to aTE preservation fund. The recordingof Tributeproceeded to China, where Yanni staged anew historic feat at another of the world's greatarchitectural achievements, the Forbidden City.Befiveen India and China, Yanni played to a collectiveaudience of 250 million people.
In 2000 Yanni released his first studio album inseven years , If I Could Tell You,, an introspective anddeeply personal proiect which came in the wake of atwo-year sabbatical, a move to the east coast of theU.S., and other changes which refocused his life andlife's work,
"Music," says Yanni, "is an incredibly direct lan-guage. It blpasses logic and speak directly to yoursoul." It is this notion that inspired the boy whobegan his musical career by gving recitals beforefamily members in a seaside village, and who hassince been communicating on a global level that fewof his peers can match.
element distinguishin g Ethn ici t1t from previousns is fhe ertenslve use of humnn voices, not onlv Yanni's first Grammy-nominated album wre Dare Toarire and group chants, but 'also bona fide Dream (1992), which produced the vocal singleit?faf,e deparfire for the arlist. "The Promise," "AriA'" popularized by an award-winning British
