Valentines Day at Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum will be a family affair on Saturday, February 14th with a variety of activities and events offered throughout the day. The fun begins at 1:00 p.m. when all are invited for free to the mansion’s Great Lawn to enjoy a roaring bonfire with free hot chocolate and roasted marshmal-lows.

Those choosing to move indoors will enjoy a 3:00 p.m. children’s production of “The Musical Hat” followed by a Victorian Tea for a combined ticket price. An original work of Nutshell Playhouse - written and directed by Don Jordan – the show features Shmurple and her fellow clowns singing songs from their Musical Hat, when sud-denly they discover their music has been stolen. Join them as they try to get it back, and in the process discover what music is made of. Share their adven-tures as they follow the Snoof, meet the Ductionary and dance with a clown. Live actors, puppets, mime, music and more - recommended for ages 3 to 9.

Guided tours of the mansion will also be available, as usual, at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Tour guide and Board Member Kelly Blau, and other guides, will relay the romantic 19th century story of original owners, George Hale Morgan (a Valentine’s Day baby) and Sarah Spencer Morgan (sister of

J.P. Morgan) including their Valentine’s Day wedding. They com-pleted Ventfort Hall in 1893 as a summer “cottage.” Tours will also include the spectacu-lar and popular exhibit of “Les Petites Dames de Mode” (“The Little Ladies of Fashion”); sixty fabulous 29-inch mannequins fitted with exquisitely detailed Gilded Age costumes.

Mansion tours are $12 per person, $11 for

seniors, $10 for students, $5 for children aged 5 to 17, and children under 5 are free. Plumbing & Heating of Washington I found myself totally in awe of his knowledge and drive to be the best of the best in his field. He informed me that he has been known as RJ since his childhood and it just stuck with him.

His working career began at the Becket General Store where he worked a few hours a week during Junior High. He also took on part-time work for Ed Bond, a local contractor, who hired him as a gopher and to do clean up. Soon after that he started work-ing vacations and summers for Cesco Plumbing in Becket. RJ said that during that time, the business consisted of Chris and Bill Swindlehurst and one plumber, Ed Mange. “ I was a gopher, and drilled holes while learning about plumbing and heating,” he said.

RJ also attended BCC through this time and worked toward getting his degree in Environmental Life Science. RJ’s aspiration was to be an environ-mental police officer. He took the exam where he placed in the top 250 of the 1500 who took the test. When not chosen in the next 3 years for any of the openings he decided to step back from that and get

into a career that he could rely on, which was the plumbing and heating field. “No matter how young or old, I knew that I could always make money doing this, because there is always a need for tradesmen.

RJ explained that he had to work for 3 years as an apprentice with Chris at Cesco before he could take his Journeyman’s test. He gave much credit to Chris and Bill for their help. He attended classes at Taconic (300 hours) to obtain his Journeyman’s license, and then went on to attend NEFI (New England Fuel Institute) at STCC for his Oil Burner’s License. He now has a Master’s License and his SFCSL (Solid Fuel Construction Supervisor’s License for wood, coal, and wood pellet stove installation. He is also certified to do Solar and to work on Buderas oil or gas boilers that are very high-efficiency.

He filled me in on how many hours of school-ing, apprenticeship, and continuing education that someone who wants to be a plumber has to go through. It is very extensive and all state accredited. The state has pushed for more and more schooling to keep up with all the code changes that take place constantly.

RJ stepped out on his own on November 1, 2002.

“I wanted a separate identity,” he said. This decision came about mostly because of the birth of his daughter Vienne. He wanted to have time with her. She is now 6 years old and in kindergarten. RJ is there to put her on the bus and when she gets home. He said as she gets older, this will change, but for now this extra time with her means a lot. His work schedule revolves around her but he said he is able to accomplish a lot in a short time and has the ability to do his job well, is organized and treats everyone’s homes like they are his own – like he had to live there. His biggest thing is to be produc-tive – get things done – done right the first time – and not have to keep going back.

When asked how he came up with the Pioneer name he said that you think of someone who is a pioneer as a leader, hence his motto: a leader in quality and craftsmanship. Another big thing with RJ is his ability to communicate with his customers, to make them a part of the project and to help them understand what he is doing. “I can’t just install some-thing and leave,” he explained. He said he understands the whole build-ing process so it helps make the job go smoothly and he is able to work well with other contractors.

RJ is very close with his family, which includes his fiancé Lisa Haynes,

who is City Planner for Pittsfield. “She is a very busy woman,” he said. Still a big part of his life is his parents. His father lives next door and his mother is on Johnson Road in Becket. He said they both help out with Vienne. He also has a sister Hanna who lives in Pittsfield with her son and daughter.

RJ said he is very excited about a Smith Vocational student who will work with him through Smith’s co-op program. He will start during the February school vacation and then go on the co-op in March working every other week with him.

Pioneer Plumbing and Heating offers such services as additions, new houses, kitchens, baths, radiant heat systems, and hydro baseboard. “Anything you think a plumber could work on, I do,” he said.

My visit with RJ was very infor-mative. I found him a very friendly, knowledgeable, family-oriented man who has worked hard to get to this point in his life.

AARP Tax-Aide Offers Free Help To Taxpayers

The City of Pittsfield announced that applications are now avail-able for funding to provide human services to benefit Pittsfield residents. Funding is for the program year July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.

Annually, the City undertakes a process through the Human Services Advisory Council (HSAC), an 11 member volunteer committee which reviews the proposals and submits its recommendations to the Mayor. Last years recommendations resulted in 36 human service programs receiving a total of $450,000 from the City’s general fund and from the federal Community Development Block Grant Program. The consumers assisted with those funds ranged from infants to the elderly.

In addition to submitting a written proposal, applicants will be invit-ed to come before the HSAC to make a presentation in April. HSAC Chairman Christopher Meehan said, “Again we’re looking forward to televising the presentations on Pittsfield Community Television. It provides an excellent opportunity for the public to learn more about the great work that agencies are doing in Pittsfield, and it also allows the citizens to see a part of our process.”

The choir will present a concert in collaboration with the Berkshire South Regional Community Center at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14. It will feature selections from the Magic Tree House: The Musical, based on the popular series of children’s books by Mary Pope Osborne. By special permission from Ms. Pope, the Choir has obtained the rights to perform music from the show, which is currently on a national tour. This will be a premiere performance in Berkshire County. Also on the program is the fairy tale Musicians of Bremen arranged for a cappella choir, and the Never-Ending Song, a Young Person’s Guide to the Choir. Joining the group will be a children’s choir from the Montessori School of the Berkshires.

The Cantilena Chamber Choir is under the artistic direction of Andrea Goodman who is also the Director of the Northern Berkshire Chorale in Williamstown and the Saratoga Choral Festival, an annual summer concert series for chorus and orchestra in Saratoga Springs, New York.
