now become an international issue and a
cause of concern for environmentalists. Big
industries, Factories, Peoples living in
colonies, slums and rural areas everyone
pollute this holy river. 18 drains of city
falls into the river as it covers distance of
22 km in Delhi. City dumps its 3,296
million liters per day of sewage in the river.
People wash their clothes, utensils and
other things in the river and pollutes it
everyday.
Steps taken by the Government to clean
the River.......
Our Yamuna
• In 1909 the waters of the Yamuna were distinguishable as "clear blue", as compared to the silt-laden yellow of the Ganges .However, due to high density population growth and rapid industrialization today Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers in the world, especially around New Delhi, the capital of India, which dumps about 58% of its waste into the river.
A few years back when the pollution level of Yamuna increased alarmingly, the Delhi government woke up. A number of projects were launched by the government to clean the Yamuna, but till date nothing has happened. Yamuna Action Plan has not given desired results because it is not in accordance with the Master Plan for Delhi-2021. In 2009 Year Delhi Govt. entered into agreement with Engineers India Limited to clean Yamuna. Delhi Jal Board proposed laying down sewers along the three major drains - Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahadra drains and also make 15 sewage treatment plants functional to prevent the waste from going into this holy river.
New Delhi generates 1,900 million litre per day (MLD) of
sewage. Though numerous attempts have been made to process it,
the efforts have proven to be futile. Although the government of
India has spent nearly $500 million to clean up the river, the
Yamuna continues to be polluted with garbage while most
sewage treatment facilities are underfunded or malfunctioning. In
addition, the water in this river remains stagnant for almost nine
months in a year, aggravating the situation. Delhi alone
contributes around 3,296 MLD of sewage in the river. The
government of India over the next five years has prepared plans
to rebuild and repair the sewage system and the drains that
empty into the river.
Here is the proof!!!!Average values of selective physico-chemical parameters measured in
Yamuna at upstream and midstream of Delhi

The steps you as astudent can take to help the
government to clean the river...
Action Plan - Industrial• All existing Industries, dumping the waste water
in Yamuna, should setup a waste water management plant at their source, and new industries should be given license only if they have a waste management plant.
