SAFETY INFORMATIONEAU10281

MOTORCYCLES ARE SINGLE TRACKVEHICLES. THEIR SAFE USE ANDOPERATION ARE DEPENDENT UPONTHE USE OF PROPER RIDINGTECHNIQUES AS WELL AS THEEXPERTISE OF THE OPERATOR.EVERY OPERATOR SHOULD KNOWTHE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTSBEFORE RIDING THIS MOTORCYCLE.HE OR SHE SHOULD:

l OBTAIN THOROUGHINSTRUCTIONS FROM ACOMPETENT SOURCE ON ALLASPECTS OF MOTORCYCLEOPERATION.

l OBSERVE THE WARNINGS ANDM A I N T E N A N C EREQUIREMENTS IN THEOWNER’S MANUAL.

l OBTAIN QUALIFIED TRAINING INSAFE AND PROPER RIDINGTECHNIQUES.

l OBTAIN PROFESSIONALTECHNICAL SERVICE ASINDICATED BY THE OWNER’SMANUAL AND/OR WHEN MADENECESSARY BY MECHANICALCONDITIONS.

Safe ridingl Always make pre-operation checks.

Careful checks may help preventan accident.

l This motorcycle is designed tocarry the operator and a passenger.

l The failure of motorists to detectand recognize motorcycles in trafficis the predominating cause ofautomobile/motorcycle accidents. Many accidents have been causedby an automobile driver who did notsee the motorcycle. Makingyourself conspicuous appears to bevery effective in reducing thechance of this type of accident.

Therefore:l Wear a brightly colored jacket.l Use extra caution when you are

approaching and passing throughintersections, since intersectionsare the most likely places formotorcycle accidents to occur.

l Ride where other motorists cansee you. Avoid riding in anothermotorist’s blind spot.

l Many accidents involveinexperienced operators. In fact,

many operators who have beeninvolved in accidents do not evenhave a current motorcycle license.l Make sure that you are qualified

and that you only lend yourmotorcycle to other qualifiedoperators.

l Know your skills and limits.Staying within your limits mayhelp you to avoid an accident.

l We recommend that youpractice riding your motorcyclewhere there is no traffic until youhave become thoroughly familiarwith the motorcycle and all of itscontrols.

l Many accidents have been causedby error of the motorcycle operator.A typical error made by the operatoris veering wide on a turn due toEXCESSIVE SPEED orundercornering (insufficient leanangle for the speed).l Always obey the speed limit and

never travel faster than warrantedby road and traffic conditions.

l Always signal before turning orchanging lanes. Make sure thatother motorists can see you.

SAFETY INFORMATIONl The posture of the operator and

passenger is important for propercontrol.l The operator should keep both

hands on the handlebar and bothfeet on the operator footrestsduring operation to maintaincontrol of the motorcycle.

l The passenger should alwayshold onto the operator, the seatstrap or grab bar, if equipped, withboth hands and keep both feeton the passenger footrests.

l Never carry a passenger unlesshe or she can firmly place bothfeet on the passenger footrests.

l Never ride under the influence ofalcohol or other drugs.

l This motorcycle is designed for on-road use only. It is not suitable foroff-road use.

Protective apparelThe majority of fatalities frommotorcycle accidents are the result ofhead injuries. The use of a safety helmetis the single most critical factor in theprevention or reduction of head injuries.

l Always wear an approved helmet.

l Wear a face shield or goggles. Windin your unprotected eyes couldcontribute to an impairment ofvision that could delay seeing ahazard.

l The use of a jacket, heavy boots, trousers, gloves, etc., is effectivein preventing or reducing abrasionsor lacerations.

l Never wear loose-fitting clothes, otherwise they could catch on thecontrol levers, footrests, or wheelsand cause injury or an accident.

l Never touch the engine or exhaustsystem during or after operation. They become very hot and cancause burns. Always wearprotective clothing that covers yourlegs, ankles, and feet.

l A passenger should also observethe above precautions.

ModificationsModifications made to this motorcyclenot approved by Yamaha, or the removalof original equipment, may render themotorcycle unsafe for use and maycause severe personal injury.Modifications may also make your

motorcycle illegal to use.

Loading and accessoriesAdding accessories or cargo to yourmotorcycle can adversely affect stabilityand handling if the weight distribution ofthe motorcycle is changed. To avoid thepossibility of an accident, use extremecaution when adding cargo oraccessories to your motorcycle. Useextra care when riding a motorcycle thathas added cargo or accessories. Hereare some general guidelines to follow ifloading cargo or adding accessories toyour motorcycle:

LoadingThe total weight of the operator, passenger, accessories and cargo mustnot exceed the maximum load limit.

Maximum load:167 kg (368 lb)

When loading within this weight limit, keep the following in mind:

l Cargo and accessory weight shouldbe kept as low and close to themotorcycle as possible. Make sureto distribute the weight as evenly

cap 1.pmd 24/1/2007, 14:372

Page 9: Yamaha YBR250 owner manual

1

SAFETY INFORMATIONas possible on both sides of themotorcycle to minimize imbalanceor instability.

l Shifting weights can create asudden imbalance. Make sure thataccessories and cargo are securelyattached to the motorcycle beforeriding. Check accessory mountsand cargo restraints frequently.

l Never attach any large or heavyitems to the handlebar, front fork,or front fender. These items, including such cargo as sleepingbags, duffel bags, or tents, cancreate unstable handling or a slowsteering response.

AccessoriesGenuine Yamaha accessories havebeen specifically designed for use onthis motorcycle. Since Yamaha cannottest all other accessories that may beavailable, you must personally beresponsible for the proper selection, installation and use of non-Yamahaaccessories. Use extreme caution whenselecting and installing any accessories.Keep the following guidelines in mind,as well as those provided under

“Loading” when mounting accessories.l Never install accessories or carry

cargo that would impair theperformance of your motorcycle.Carefully inspect the accessorybefore using it to make sure that itdoes not in any way reduce groundclearance or cornering clearance, limit suspension travel, steeringtravel or control operation, orobscure lights or reflectors.l Accessories fitted to the

handlebar or the front fork areacan create instability due toimproper weight distribution oraerodynamic changes. Ifaccessories are added to thehandlebar or front fork area, theymust be as lightweight aspossible and should be kept to aminimum.

l Bulky or large accessories mayseriously affect the stability of themotorcycle due to aerodynamiceffects. Wind may attempt to liftthe motorcycle, or the motorcyclemay become unstable in crosswinds. These accessories mayalso cause instability when

passing or being passed by largevehicles.

l Certain accessories can displacethe operator from his or hernormal riding position. Thisimproper position limits thefreedom of movement of theoperator and may limit controlability, therefore, suchaccessories are notrecommended.

l Use caution when adding electricalaccessories. If electricalaccessories exceed the capacity ofthe motorcycle’s electrical system,an electric failure could result, which could cause a dangerousloss of lights or engine power.

Gasoline and exhaust gasl GASOLINE IS HIGHLY

FLAMMABLE:l Always turn the engine off when

refueling.l Take care not to spill any gasoline

on the engine or exhaust systemwhen refueling.

l Never refuel while smoking or inthe vicinity of an open flame.

SAFETY INFORMATIONl Never start the engine or let it run

for any length of time in a closedarea. The exhaust fumes arepoisonous and may cause loss ofconsciousness and death within ashort time. Always operate yourmotorcycle in an area that hasadequate ventilation.

l Always turn the engine off beforeleaving the motorcycle unattendedand remove the key from the mainswitch. When parking themotorcycle, note the following:l The engine and exhaust system

may be hot, therefore, park themotorcycle in a place wherepedestrians or children are notlikely to touch these hot areas.

l Do not park the motorcycle on aslope or soft ground, otherwise itmay fall over.

l Do not park the motorcycle neara flammable source, (e.g., akerosene heater, or near an openflame), otherwise it could catchfire.

l When transporting the motorcyclein another vehicle, make sure thatit is kept upright. If the motorcycle

should lean over, gasoline may leakout of the fuel tank.

l If you should swallow any gasoline, inhale a lot of gasoline vapor, orallow gasoline to get into your eyes, see your doctor immediately. If anygasoline spills on your skin orclothing, immediately wash theaffected area with soap and waterand change your clothes.

PRE-OPERATION CHECKS EAU15592

The condition of a vehicle is the owner’s responsibility. Vital components can start to deteriorate quickly and unexpectedly, even if the vehicle remains unused (for example, as a result of exposure to the elements). Any damage, fluid leakage or lossof tire air pressure could have serious consequences. Therefore, it is very important, in addition to a thorough visual inspection,to check the following points before each ride.

Pre-operation checks should be made each time the vehicle is used. Such an inspection can be accomplished in a very shorttime; and the added safety it assures is more than worth the time involved.

EWA11150

If any item in the Pre-operation check list is not working properly, have it inspected and repaired before operatingthe vehicle.

EWA10270

lllll Become thoroughly familiarwith all operating controls andtheir functions before riding.Consult a Yamaha dealerregarding any control or functionthat you do not thoroughlyunderstand.

lllll Never start the engine or operateit in a closed area for any lengthof time. Exhaust fumes arepoisonous, and inhaling themcan cause loss ofconsciousness and death withina short time. Always make surethat there is adequateventilation.

lllll Before starting out, make surethat the sidestand is up. If thesidestand is not raisedcompletely, it could contact theground and distract the operator, resulting in a possible loss ofcontrol.

EAUW0090

Starting the engineIn order for the ignition circuit cut-offsystem to enable starting, one of thefollowing conditions must be met:

l The transmission is in the neutralposition.

l The transmission is in gear with theclutch lever pulled and thesidestand up.

EWA10290

lllll Before starting the engine, checkthe function of the ignitioncircuit cut-off system accordingto the procedure described onpage 3-12.

lllll Never ride with the sidestanddown.

1. Turn the key to “ON” and make surethat the engine stop switch is setto “ ”.

1. Minimum level mark

Insufficient brake fluid may allow air toenter the brake system, possiblycausing it to become ineffective. Before riding, check that the brake fluidis above the minimum level mark andreplenish if necessary. A low brake fluidlevel may indicate worn brake pads and/or brake system leakage. If the brakefluid level is low, be sure to check thebrake pads for wear and the brakesystem for leakage.Observe these precautions:

l When checking the fluid level, makesure that the top of the mastercylinder is level by turning thehandlebars.

l Use only the recommended qualitybrake fluid, otherwise the rubberseals may deteriorate, causingleakage and poor brakingperformance.

Recommended brake fluid:DOT 4

If DOT 4 is not available, DOT 3 can beused.

l Refill with the same type of brakefluid. Mixing fluids may result in aharmful chemical reaction and leadto poor braking performance.

l Be careful that water does not enterthe master cylinder when refilling.Water will significantly lower theboiling point of the fluid and mayresult in vapor lock.

l Brake fluid may deteriorate paintedsurfaces or plastic parts. Alwaysclean up spilled fluid immediately.

l As the brake pads wear, it is normalfor the brake fluid level to graduallygo down. However, if the brake fluidlevel goes down suddenly, have aYamaha dealer check the cause.

EAU22720

Changing the brake fluidHave a Yamaha dealer change the brakefluid at the intervals specified in theNOTE after the periodic maintenanceand lubrication chart. CareWhile the open design of a motorcyclereveals the attractiveness of thetechnology, it also makes it morevulnerable. Rust and corrosion candevelop even if high-quality componentsare used. A rusty exhaust pipe may gounnoticed on a car, however, it detractsfrom the overall appearance of amotorcycle. Frequent and proper caredoes not only comply with the terms ofthe warranty, but it will also keep yourmotorcycle looking good, extend its lifeand optimize its performance.

Before cleaning1. Cover the muffler outlet with a

plastic bag after the engine hascooled down.

2. Make sure that all caps and coversas well as all electrical couplersand connectors, including the sparkplug cap, are tightly installed.

3. Remove extremely stubborn dirt, like oil burnt onto the crankcase, with a degreasing agent and abrush, but never apply suchproducts onto seals, gaskets,

sprockets, the drive chain andwheel axles. Always rinse the dirtand degreaser off with water.

CleaningECA10770

lllll Avoid using strong acidic wheelcleaners, especially on spokedwheels. If such products areused on hard-to-remove dirt, donot leave the cleaner on theaffected area any longer thaninstructed. Also, thoroughlyrinse the area off with water, immediately dry it, and thenapply a corrosion protectionspray.

lllll Improper cleaning can damagewindshields, cowlings, panelsand other plastic parts. Use onlya soft, clean cloth or sponge withmild detergent and water toclean plastic.

lllll Do not use any harsh chemicalproducts on plastic parts. Besure to avoid using cloths orsponges which have been incontact with strong or abrasivecleaning products, solvent or

thinner, fuel (gasoline), rustremovers or inhibitors, brakefluid, antifreeze or electrolyte.

lllll Do not use high-pressurewashers or steam-jet cleanerssince they cause water seepageand deterioration in thefollowing areas: seals (of wheeland swingarm bearings, forkand brakes), electriccomponents (couplers, connectors, instruments, switches and lights), breatherhoses and vents.

lllll For motorcycles equipped witha windshield: Do not use strongcleaners or hard sponges asthey will cause dulling orscratching. Some cleaningcompounds for plastic mayleave scratches on thewindshield. Test the product ona small hidden part of thewindshield to make sure that itdoes not leave any marks. If thewindshield is scratched, use aquality plastic polishingcompound after washing.

After riding in the rain, near the sea oron salt-sprayed roadsSince sea salt or salt sprayed on roadsduring winter are extremely corrosive incombination with water, carry out thefollowing steps after each ride in the rain, near the sea or on salt-sprayed roads.

Salt sprayed on roads in the winter mayremain well into spring.

1. Clean the motorcycle with coldwater and a mild detergent, afterthe engine has cooled down.

ECA10790

and lubricate it to prevent it fromrusting.

3. Use a chrome polish to shinechrome, aluminum and stainless-steel parts, including the exhaustsystem. (Even the thermallyinduced discoloring of stainless-steel exhaust systems can beremoved through polishing.)

4. To prevent corrosion, it isrecommended to apply a corrosionprotection spray on all metal, including chrome- and nickel-plated, surfaces.

5. Use spray oil as a universal cleanerto remove any remaining dirt.

6. Touch up minor paint damagecaused by stones, etc.
