    Inserting Batteries

    insert six 1.5V SUM-1 "D" size, R-20,

    Remove the battery compartment coveron the bottom of the instrument and

    or equivalent alkaline batteries (soldseparately), making sure that thepolarities are placed as directed insidethe compartment. Replace the cover,ensuring that it locks securely in place.

    Optional power adaptorsHousehold current: Power Adaptor PA-4/PA-40 is available for household current.No other adaptor is usable, so whenyou purchase a power adaptor pleaseensure that it is model PA-4/PA-40.Car Battery: Car Battery Adaptor CA-1plugs into a car cigarette lighter socket.

  • Playing back theDemonstration MusicFirst, try listening to the DemonstrationMusic.To hear this music, do the following:

    1. Switch on

    Starting to playOrchestra sectionFirst, try the sounds in the Orchestrasection, which is a fundamental part ofthis keyboard.

    1. Choose an instrument voiceFirst set the Orchestra Bank selectorfor the desired bank of voices (OrchestraBank selector in upper position to selectupper row of voices labeled in silverabove the voice selectors, lower positionto select lower row of voices labeled inyellow.) Then press the Orchestra Voiceselector for the desired voice in theselected bank.l When you turn the keyboard ON, the

    BRASS 1 voice will automaticallybe selected if the Orchestra Bankselector is set to the upper position,and the BRASS 2 voice will be selectedif the Orchestra Bank selector is setto the lower position.

  • Notes:1. Vibrato is automatically applied to voices which

    benefit from application of this effect.2. Be sure to set the Auto Bass Chord MODE

    selector to the OFF position. When theselector is set to the SINGLE FINGER or FINGERED position. the keys in the Auto BassChord key section cannot be used for melodyplaying.

    2. Try other voicesMake your selection from among thevoices in the ORCHESTRA section

    Note:The maximum number of notes that can be playedsimultaneously (normally twelve) will be reducedwhen the Auto Bass Chord, Duet and DigitalSynthesizer are used. The minimum number ofsimultaneous notes is two.

    3. Adding sustainSlide the SUSTAIN selector to its 1or 2 setting, and notes will be sustain-ed after you lift your fingers from thekeys. SUSTAIN 1 produces a shortsustain, SUSTAIN 2 produces a longersustain.

    Pitch controlThe PITCH control function enablesyou to fine-tune the keyboard for whenyou want to play in an ensemble. Eachtime is pressed, the pitch increasesvery slightly, up to a maximum of 50cents above the preset level. Whenever is pressed, the pitch drops slightly,also to a maximum of 50 cents.

    Notes:1. If you hold down one of the PITCH controls, the

    pitch will change continuously.2. If you press both of the PITCH controls together,

    the pitch will return to the preset level (A3=440Hz).

  • Voice Editing

    DIGITAL SYNTHESIZERAs one of the PSR-36s special features,the Digital Synthesizer function allowsyou to expand the 32 orchestra voicesto total of 100,000 different voices.

    Lets create various voices usingDIGITAL SYNTHESIZER.1. Select the desired voice by pressing

    one of the 32 Orchestra Voiceselectors

    2. Set the Digital Synthesizer selector to ON.

    3. Adjust the volume using the MasterVolume control

    4. Set each Voice Data controller(SPECTRUM, BRILLIANCE,ENVELOPE, VIBRATO and DETUNE)

    to the position which results inthe desired sound.

    SPECTRUMThis controls the timbre or tone colorof the voice.

    BRILLIANCEThis determines how brilliant or mellowthe voice is.

    ENVELOPEControls the attack of the notes (whetherthe notes begin sharply or smoothly).

    VIBRATOThis controls the vibrato effect.

  • DETUNEIncreasing the DETUNE setting producesa thicker multi-instrument type sound.

    5. Now, lets play some notes. Bycomparing the same voice in both theON and OFF settings of the DigitalSynthesizer Selector you candistinguish the difference in timbre.

  • 2. Start the rhythmAfter selecting a rhythm, press theSTART selector

    Synchro StartUse the SYNCHRO START buttonIf you want the rhythm to begin fromthe moment you first press a key. Anyof the 19 keys (up to F#2) beginningat the left of the keyboard (Auto BassChord key section will activate therhythm.

    Intro./EndingInstead of using START, you can havethe rhythm begin by using theINTRO./ENDING button . When thisselector is pressed, the rhythm willstart after a two-bar intro-phrase.

    3. AdjustmentsVolumeThe Rhythm VOLUME control lets YOU adjust the rhythm volume inrelation to the melody volume.TempoUse the TEMPO controls to adjustthe speed of the rhythm.VariationThe Rhythm VARIATION selectorgives a choice of five patterns foreach rhythm.

    4. Making use of the Tempo LightThe Tempo Light functions as a visualmetronome, making it simple for you toconfirm the rhythm tempo. It flashesindicating tempo when the rhythm isrunning and also when the SYNCHROSTART button has been pressed butyou have not yet started the rhythm bypressing a key.

  • 5. Adding fill-insIf you tap the FILL-IN button therhythm being played will be replacedwith a 1-bar drum solo.

    If you press the FILL-IN button before starting to play, the rhythm willstart after a 1-bar drum solo.

    6. Using the INTRO./ENDING buttonfor your musical finale

    If you press the INTRO./ENDING buttonwhen the rhythm is on, the rhythm

    will stop automatically after playing atwo-bar ending phrase. If you wish tostop the rhythm immediately, press theSTOP button

    Keyboard PercussionPress the KEYBOARD PERCUSSIONbutton and you can enjoy playinglike a drummer by tapping the CustomDrummer keys with your fingers.Twenty-five PCM digital percussionsounds are assigned to the keys. Thedifferent kinds of percussion instrumentsounds are indicated by symbols nextto the relevant keys. (When the KeyboardPercussion feature is engaged, theTempo Light will come on). If you turnKEYBOARD PERCUSSION ON while arhythm pattern is playing, the rhythmpattern will stop (leaving bass and/orchord backing when using the Auto BassChord function described in item 7) soyou can play your own rhythm on theCustom Drummer keys. Press theKEYBOARD PERCUSSION button asecond time to exit the Keyboardpercussion mode.

  • Creating originalrhythm patternsCustom DrummerThe PSR-36 has 80 preset rhythm patterns(including variations). Apart from thepreset patterns, you can also createoriginal ones of your own using CustomDrummer

    Programming a rhythm patternCreate your own version of the 8 Beatrhythm. 1. First of all, choose a basic rhythm

    pattern from among the presetrhythms. As an example, select POPS.

    2. Press the PROGRAM selector. Youare now ready to input.

    Try writing the following rhythm patterns:

The mainadvantage is that after storing the chordprogression and rhythm pattern in thememory, you can have them replayedautomatically to accompany you whileyou concentrate on practicing yourmelody performances or improvisations.

    A. Chord recording1. Depress the RECORD button in the

    CHORD SEQUENCER section.2. Try storing the accompaniment for

    Greensleeves. First, select WALTZin the Rhythm section, and then playthe following chord sequence togetherwith the rhythm (using the Auto BassChord key section

    Note 1:Recording can also be started by pressing the STARTbutton You can use this method when youwant to start with a "blank" chord pattern.

    Note 2:The accompaniment can be played using either theSingle Finger or Fingered mode of the Auto BassChord section. However, the Single Finger modeis automatically engaged when you press RECORDexcept when using the Fingered mode beforehand(see page 13 for instructions on Single Finger andpage 14 for Fingered).

    3. When all of the chords have beenprogrammed, press the STOP button or RECORD button again.The accompaniment has now beenstored in the memory.

    B. Chord playbackThe memorized accompaniment can beplayed back, unless you cancel thememory contents by inputting a differentchord sequence.

    Capacity of Chord SequencerAbout 100 chord changes are possible.This means that it is possible to recordthe chords for a piece consistingof 100 measures if one measurecontains one chord on average.If complicated chords are recorded byusing Fingered Chord, the chordrecordig capacity will be reduced.If the number of chords exceeds thememory capacity, recording will stopautomatically.

    External jacksSeveral jacks are provided at the back ofthe keyboard for connecting a variety ofoptional accessories. There is also aheadphone jack at the front.

    About MIDI

    MIDI is an acronym standing for MusicalInstrument Digital Interface, which is astandard interface for communicationbetween keyboards and other musicdevices.The Porta Tone PSR-36 is equipped withMIDI jacks (IN and OUT), enablingconnection of the Porta Tone to anotherkeyboard equipped with MIDI jacks oran expander module, for synchronizedperformances.

    Note:The OMNI ON Mode is selected by pressing the 17thkey from the left while pressing the MIDI button

    4. Program Change OffThis is used to cancel the sending andreception of voice select and rhythmselect information (program changes)from an external device.

    6. Local OffThis is used to cancel the melody soundsof the PSR-36. (Rhythm and Auto BassChord cannot be turned off. The Rhythmand Auto Bass Chord sounds can beeliminated by setting their volumes toMIN.)

  • Taking care of yourPortaToneYour PortaTone will remain in excellent

    1. When you use AC power, be sure touse the optional AC Power PA-4/PA-40 adaptor. Before use, read theadaptor instructions carefully. Inparticular, please note that in somecases the PA-4/PA-40 is providedwith a voltage selector, so confirmthat this selector is correctly set.

    2. The optional car battery adaptorCA-1 is only for use with a negativearound 12V battery. Ensure that thisis the case before connecting theadaptor.

    3. Connections made between thePortaTone and any other deviceshould be made with both unitsturned off.

    4. Do not set the MASTER VOLUMEat MAX when you connect thePortaTone to a stereo system. Usethe stereo systems volume controlto adjust the sound level.

    5. Avoid placing the instrument inexcessively humid areas.

    6. Do not subject the unit to physicalshock, and avoid placing anythingheavy on it.

    7. The PortaTone should not be placedin direct sunlight for a long time.

    8. Do not place the instrument nearany heating appliance, or leave itinside a car in direct sunlight forany length of time. Direct sunshinecan raise the interior temperature ofa car with closed doors and windowsto as high as 80C. Temperaturesin excess of 60C can cause physicaland/or electrical damage not covered

    9.by warranty.Use a dry or damp cloth for cleaning.

    The PortaTone PSR-36 uses frequencies that appear in theradio frequency range, and it installed in the immediateproximity (within three meters) of some types of audio orvideo devices interference may occur.

    The PortaTone PSR-36 has been type tested and testedto comply with the specifications set for a Class Bcomputing device in accordance with those specificationslisted in Subpart J of Part 15 of the FCC rules. These rulesare designed to provide a reasonable measure of protectionagainst such interference. However this does not guaranteethat interference will not occur. If your PortaTone PSR-36should be suspected of causing interference with otherelectronic devices, verification can be made by tuning yourPortaTone PSR-36 off and on. If the interference continueswhen your PortaTone PSR-36 is off, PortaTone PSR-36 is notthe source of the interference. If your PortaTone PSR-36does appear to be the source of the interference, you shouldtry to correct the situation by using one or more of thefollowing measures:

    Relocate either the PortaTone PSR-36 or the electronicdevice that is being affected by the interference.

    Utilize power outlets for the PortaTone PSR-36 and thedevice being affected that are on different branch ( circuitbreaker of fuse) circuits, or install A/C line filters

    In the case of radio TV interference, relocate theantenna or, if the antenna lead-in is a 300 ohm ribbon lead,change the lead-in to a co-axial type cable.
