I could not find them in the dictionary. So, maybe I just made them up. “Pneuma” is the Greek word for “Spirit” and is used in the New Testament in reference to the Holy Spirit. “Phobos” is the Greek word for “fear”. So, pneumaphobia is fear of the Spirit. Someone who is pneumaphobic is a person who is afraid of the Spirit. Are you pneumaphobic? I think that many United Methodist are pneumaphobic. It does not seem to be respectable to talk about the Holy Spirit. Some people will look incredulous if you speak about hearing from God as the Holy Spirit speaks. Do people really expect the Spirit to speak through scriptures or prayer? People respect the Christian contemplative traditions but do so while rejecting the idea that prayer is dialogue and not just monologue. Anything that speaks of a direct relationship with the numinous, such as mysticism, raises eyebrows. I highly recommend Elaine Heath’s new book God Unbound: Wisdom from Galatians for the Anxious Church. In this book, Heath wrote: “Though many of us Christian leaders and theologians believe God speaks to people through dreams, visions, and other spiritual experiences, sadly we often exclude these encounters from what we consider authoritative knowledge or a reliable source for faith and practice. We tend to marginalize or simply ignore these experiences.” We are products of the Enlightenment and the scientific age. While both of these historic eras have brought us some great benefits such as democracy and technological advances, we have been left spiritually impoverished. People have been captured by a worldview that is one dimensional, only the physical. Members of American mainline churches particularly seem to avoid any talk of the work of the Spirit. There is a prejudice against spiritual experience. Methodism was founded as a result of John and Charles Wesley’s heart-warming experiences. That sounds like a mystical, spiritual experience to me. A strong emphasis on the person and work of Holy Spirit has been a part of our narrative from the beginning. In the era of the Wesley brothers, they were accused of being “enthusiasts” which was the eighteenth century term for charismatic or Pentecostal. The early Methodist sought to know God experientially. I don’t think that there is much of a chance that modern United Methodists would be classified along with Wesley as “enthusiasts.” This is why we birthed other denominations such as the Church of the Nazarene, the Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal Church of God, and the Salvation Army. These are groups of people who left our denomination because we lost our fire, the fire of the Holy Spirit.

Maybe that is part of our problem. We know more about the cross than the flame. We need to be talking about what is necessary for God to restore the flame to our movement. We need to be praying for spiritual renewal in our churches. When need to be thankful that the Holy Spirit is disturbing us at this point in our history. If we are faithful this might be the prelude of our renewal as a movement. With Confidence in Christ, Jeff

Resources Available from the District Resource Center The District Resource Center is a lending library for the churches of the Yadkin Valley District. Feel free to stop by and browse through the many selections of books, studies, and curriculum. It’s that time of year to think about stewardship/commitment campaigns. There are several resources available from the District Resource Center.

The Generous Church – A Guide for Pastors by Tom Berlin. This resources is a practical guide for pastors and church leaders. In order to inspire generosity in individuals, the church needs to be seen and understood as generous. People will embrace giving if they believe their gifts are used in the community and the world to further the mission of Christ. Treasure by Jacob Armstrong. This is a four-week program focusing on Matthew 6 to re-examine how we look at our finances and possessions. Kit includes worship resources (sermon outlines, discussion guides, and videos), communication resources (announcements, commitment cards, etc.), etc. Extravagant Generosity by Michael Reeves and Jennifer Tyler. Built around Robert Schnase’s book Five

Practices of Fruitful Congregations, the authors connect the spiritual role of generosity to daily financial discipleship. The materials include a step-by-step program guide for four Sunday services and campaign. First by Mike Slaughter. How much is enough? This four-week all-church stewardship program will help participants reassess priorities and create a culture and lifestyle of giving, with a special emphasis on missions. The kit also includes studies for children and youth.

The Sacrament of the Moment As my wife, Janet, and I transition into the Western North Carolina Conference we are overwhelmed with the gracious reception, encouragement, and hospitality expressed through visits, cards, texts, phone calls, emails, letters, and welcome gifts extending a genuine acceptance into our newly appointed conference. Thank you. Your warm embrace has created a time in which we have been reflecting on our journey together in ministry. I suppose every time we experience changes in our congregations we find ourselves contemplating how God’s presence has been unfolding from the first day until now.

When I was elected, consecrated, and appointed to serve as a bishop within The United Methodist Church in 2008, I found myself pondering on many unique moments from the past that had brought me to this present moment. I suspect many us can look back on past incidents and see how God’s Presence has orchestrated these events in bringing us to the present. What is more difficult for me, is to recognize the Unseen Divine Presence that is with us now preparing us for the future.

Jean Pierre de Caussade, an eighteenth century priest and author of “Abandonment to Divine Providence” wrote about “the sacrament of the moment”, reminding us of God’s presence in every moment thus allowing us to truly abandon ourselves to everything that happens to us because we truly believe that God’s providence over our lives is good. Self-abandonment is not easy. It requires a daily renewal of ourselves to God’s grace and love in our lives submitting everything to the Divine Presence revealed in Jesus the Word made flesh.

I am sharing one of my favorite pictures taken at Lake Junaluska at the time of my election in 2008. This picture represents bishops that I admire and respect who prayed with me and placed their hands on me – Bishop Charlene Kammerer and Bishop Lawrence McCleskey – both of whom served as bishops of our Western North Carolina Conference. This picture was taken eight years ago, yet it represents a sacramental moment in which God was moving before me, I believe, preparing me for service in the same conference they served. It is a reminder to me of the Unseen Divine Presence preparing the way for us even when we are unaware that God is with us – Emmanuel.

As some of you already know, I sincerely embrace Philippians 1:3-11 as a reminder that the ministry to which we are called is a partnership in the gospel, from the first day until now. I have reminded everyone with whom I have

served that the verses reflected in Philippians captures my hope for our work and ministry together:

• I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the Gospel

• Having JOY from the first day until now

• Confident that God who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion

• It is right for me to feel this way about you all

• I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus

• This is my prayer – that your love may abound more and more

• That you will be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.

As I have said before, and I affirm again, my obedience to God through the guidance of the Church allows me to enter into this time of change and transition with the affirmation of St. Paul, “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened has really served to advance the gospel” (Philippians 1:12), and as a result we can “speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly” (Philippians 1:14).

Thank you, God, for this sacramental moment.

With gratitude and expectation, Paul L. Leeland
