Connecting small and large shapes, dramatic colors, with random discoveries inspire my work while desiring to create a piece that pulls people into the journey. I also love the velvety textures of pastels as a newly discovered medium I intend to explore extensively. My style varies from impressionistic realism to abstraction. Artist’s StatementMy approach to art is driven by seeing colors in a new way, exploring emotions, creating layers of textures that bring unexpected delight to the viewer.

It’s especially exciting to me to allow the painting to discover itself through manipulation of products and surfaces. I have a plan but thrive in the journey of the painting revealing itself.

BiographyValerie, her husband and two sons, moved from Orlando to Winston-Salem area in North Carolina in 2003 after careers as executives at Walt Disney World; Valerie 27 years and Spencer 32 years. After the intense corporate world taught Valerie so much about leadership, culture, creativity and excellence which she then applied to her own consulting business which she has had since 1997. Valerie has always been a creative person exploring sewing, fashion design, jewelry design, and just about every other form of creative expression. In 2008, she asked her then 86-year-old mother to teach her to paint. Her mom, who has painted since she was five, said “finally!” Her passion for painting began with the first piece and continues to grow. She has explored every medium and favors oil, acrylic, mixed media and pastel. Valerie had early success by winning third place in the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center juried art show “Eye of the Artist” in 2012. Valerie has taken art instruction from Sharon Grubbs, Fran Speight, and David Kessler. She is founding member and serves as chair of the Carolina Painters’ Guild in Winston-Salem, NC.
