  7. 7. in the Gas Lamp Players' jceiWderlan 7 This week, the Glen Ridge-based theater group is taking the stage at Ridgewood Avenue School with "Alice in Wonderland." The show which is the capstone of the two-month summer theater camp for children - is based on the 1953 Disney animated classic, which in turn is based on the Lewis Carroll novel. As of Monday, the cast and crew were starting full run-throughs of the show, with lighting, sound and costumes. "It's really actually coming I'm going to knock on wood as I say this it's really coming together beautifully," said director Carrie Yacono. There are about 82 children participating in the show this year. Most are from Glen Ridge, co-director Sue Deubner said, but others are from surrounding towns like Montclair, Bloomfield, Verona and Millburn. This year's show operated on a condensed schedule four weeks of camp with five days each. Each week offered a special event for the campers. One week, it was a master class in mime and there's going to be some mime included in the show, Yacono said. Another week, to tie in with the Mad Hatter's tea party, the campers got a lesson in tea party etiquette. There was also a special "game day," complete with a croquet set. The show is also going to offer some new kinds of special effects. For the Cheshire Cat, Gas Lamp built with some help from Yacono's mother a giant puppet cat with lights sewn on to it. The puppet will have three actors handling it during the show. And the falling-down-the-rabbit-hole scene will include some special effects with strobe lights and blacklights. Gas Lamp's summer workshop is offered for children in grades one through eight. The workshop starts in June and culminates with a performance in early August. In between auditions and rehearsals, the campers get to do theater games and exercises. It is also traditional for Gas Lamp to bring in guest artists to work with the campers. - See more at: http://www.northjersey.com/arts_entertainment/theater/217869021_Gas_Lamp_camp_ends_with__Alice_in_Wonderland__in_Glen_ Ridge.html#sthash.bPJXA8gC.dpuf There were occasional last-minute jitters, Yacono said, but for the most part, the run-throughs have been solid ones and for that, she praised the talents of the cast and the crew. "I could not ask to be in a better place with these rehearsals." The performances are at 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. Baristanet.com 18 Jennifer Hutchison, used with permission Follow The Yellow Brick Road Tuesday, August 7, 2007 Glen Ridge's much-loved Gas Lamp Players, known for their fall musicals, will be putting on "The Wizard of Oz" this weekend at Ridgewood Avenue School. It's their first-ever summer show, and also happens to be their first kids-only production. Jessica Sporn, the show's producer, says so many talented Baristaville children have auditioned for past shows that it was time for a production cast entirely with kids. More than 60 children are participating in "Oz," Sporn tells us: "We've got a field full of poppies, flying monkeys, winkies, a lovable lion, a sweet scarecrow and so much more," she says. Among the local rising stars: Alex Intner (as the Wizard of Oz), Maxine Lambiase (as the Cowardly Lion), Juliette Candela (as the Scarecrow), Kyle Elphick (as the Tin Man), Olivia Badalamenti (as Glinda), Annie Hutchinson (as the Wicked Witch of the West), Carrie Yacono (the director), Katie Shults (as Dorothy) and Samy Cordero (as Toto).
