YAMAMOTO, TSUNEICHI, former president and general manager of Hawaii‟s only Japanese

English daily newspaper, died on March 22, 1993. He was 92. Yamamoto was born in Okayama,

Japan, and moved to Hawaii in 1917. Two years later, at the age of 18, he was a reporter for

Hawaii Hochi, a Japanese language newspaper. Yamamoto left the newspaper business in 1934

to become general manager of the Honolulu Sake Brewing Co., a post he held until 1941 when

World War II broke out. Like about 2,000 other Hawaii residents of Japanese ancestry,

Yamamoto was sent to an internment camp on the Mainland. He returned to Hawaii after the war

and became publisher of the Pacific Family Graphic Magazine. In the late 1940s, Yamamoto

started a Japanese language program broadcast on radio station KULA. In 1954, he was invited

back to Hawaii Hochi – which had become a Japanese-English newspaper- where he would

become its editor/general manager, vice president and finally president. He retired from the

paper in 1967, but was an adviser for many years. Reizo Watanabe, a close friend and colleague,

described Yamamoto as a humble man who could turn little issues into big news. “He was

amazing,” said Watanabe. “I think as a newspaperman he was very qualified.” Yamamoto was

also the editor of “The Rainbow, a Bridge from East to West … Past to Future,” a book

commemorating the 70th

Anniversary of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, which

he helped organize in the 1930s. Yamamoto was a longtime supporter of Japanese language

education and was the founder of Mitsubakai, a classical Japanese dance and musical teacher‟s

organization. Perhaps his most visible legacy, however, are the cherry blossom trees planted in

such places as Kokee, Kauai, Kula and Waihee on Maui and Waimea on the Big Island.

Yamamoto was a member of the numerous other Japanese organizations including Shigon Shu

Kyodan, United Japanese Society, Hawaii Kiin Okayama Jin Kai, Hawaii Kyoiku Kai and

Makiki Nippongo Gakko. He is survived by his wife, Chiyoko Yamamoto; daughters, Mrs.

Robert (Tamoko) Tsuyemura, Mabel and Jacqueline; three grandchildren and five great-

YATES, MARK REID, 71, of Honolulu, died July24, 1993. He retired as a Bank of Hawaii

executive and was born in Washington, D.C. He moved to Hawaii in 1940 and began a long

career with the bank. Prior to retiring as vice president and secretary, he served in branch

administration in Waikiki, Barbers Point and Kaimuki and in auditing on the neighbor islands.

After his retirement he volunteered with the Honolulu Symphony, Metropolitan Opera Guild,

University of Hawaii Medical School and the Republican Party of Hawaii. Recently, he had

helped coordinate the AIDS Task Force Symposium for the Youth of Hawaii. Survived by wife,
