Consumers purchase products and services toexperience certain emotional states or achieveemotional goals in a process called emotional arousal.Emotions can create a feeling of pleasure orsatisfaction, but they can also give the consumer theperception that their purchase will help them avoid afeeling of displeasure. No matter what the purchase is,consumers must somehow associate a positiveemotional connection between a product andthemselves. Positive emotions can include the fulfillmentof a desire or the feelings of safety and protection.Consumers also have both unexpressed and expressedemotions. It is important to understand the differencebetween these emotions because if a consumer ispurchasing but is not expressing any emotion toward aproduct, you may need to ask more questions in orderto reach the customer on a deeper level. Doing so helpsthe consumers feel that they are somehow linked toyour product and that it produces a favorable image ofthem. This reaction evokes consumer identification withyour product and motivates them to buy – and keepbuying – your product.

How does buying something affect consumers’emotions?

It gives consumers a feeling of achievement.

It causes consumers to have damaging thoughts.

It influences every decision consumers make beforepurchasing.

It leads to a condition of discomfort and misery.

It results in a feeling of regret for purchasing too much.

A new helmet display promises to give bikers eyes inthe back of their heads. The designer of the equipmentstates that the inherent problem with motorcycles is thatthe mirrors reflect a very small image and, because ofthe position of the mirrors, motorcyclists mostly just seetheir elbows. A small backlit display screen is addedonto motorcycle helmets with an adjustable arm whichlets riders place it just below or above their eye, in theirperipheral vision. A rear-facing camera attached to theback of the bike streams live video via Wi-Fi to thehelmet-mounted receiver. The images are processedand stabilised before they reach the display toaccommodate for the bike’s movements. One glance atthe display gives the rider a wide view of the roadbehind them. Although the screen is just next to theuser’s face, optics fool the eye into focusing at a morecomfortable distance of around 3 metres. However, it isstill suggested that users should check their mirrors anddo the lifesaver check, turning their heads to check blindspots.

What is the problem regarding the motorcyclists’vision?

It is difficult for bikers to get a broad view of the roadbehind them using only their mirrors.

Fatal accidents cannot be prevented because of thelimited use of mirrors.

Motorcyclists have difficulty adjusting mirrors to getimages from the sides of the bike.

The body’s position on the motorcycle does not allowthe biker to see what is happening around him.

Mirror positions constantly need to be changed tofollow traffic flow.

Today’s symphony orchestra has its roots in 17th

century bands. The earliest orchestras, usually attachedto a church, or a theatre, varied in structure from placeto place. They were often directed from the keyboard orby the principal violinist. During the 18th century, aspopular works such as those by Haydn and Mozartbegan to be played all over Europe, somestandardization of the orchestra became necessary. Astring section comprising violins, violas, cellos, anddouble basses was usually joined by two horns, twoflutes, two trumpets, and timpani. The clarinet became astandard member of the orchestra only at the end of the18th century. The 19th century saw the rise of publicconcerts in large halls, which necessitated louderinstruments and larger orchestras. As a result, instruments changed. They were redesigned andadapted to enable them to project further. Larger andsmaller versions of some instruments, such as thepiccolo, cor anglais, and bass clarinet, were featuredmore frequently. Some new instruments were alsoadded, with trombones and later, tubas becomingstandard members of the orchestra.

According to the passage, the first orchestras ----.

did not all have a consistent structure

were able to perform only in churches and theatres

had almost the same structural system with each other

used the same instruments as modern orchestras dotoday

reached their audiences with louder instruments inlarger halls

required more members and instruments modified toproject sound further

wanted to redesign their instruments so as to usethem in small churches and theatres

For centuries, the world’s physicists, writers andphilosophers have argued about whether time travel ispossible, with most coming to the conclusion that it isnever going to happen. But on a large plot of land justoutside the small town of Comfort, Texas, a group ofarchitects, engineers and scientists are building a‘Timeship’ that they say it could transport tens ofthousands of individuals to a far-distant future. Theirapproach does not involve the use of flux capacitors, orzooming at light-speed through black holes. Instead, theTimeship aims to store people at such low temperaturesthat their bodies are preserved for a future civilisation toreanimate them, a concept known as cryonics. “Just asa spaceship allows people to move through space, ourTimeship will allow people to travel to another time inthe future,” explains Stephen Valentine, who is thedirector and principal architect of the Timeship project.

According to the group of architects, engineers andscientists in Texas, ----.

the city is not really suitable for the ‘Timeship’ becauseit is such a small place

it will soon be possible to transport more than10,000 people to a far-distant future

it is possible that the bodies of people are preservedwith almost no changes

their ‘Timeship’ will have the capacity of at most10,000 people

time travel is not likely to take place until a far-distantfuture

It was a road that kicked off the pattern of destruction inthe Amazon forest. During the 1970s, Brazil beganbuilding the Trans-Amazonian Highway from near thecountry’s easternmost point to its western border, wherethe state of Amazonas meets Peru. The route openedup the heart of the Amazon to settlement, causingdeforestation rates to increase. During the 1990s andearly 2000s, more than 25,000 square kilometres ofrainforest per year were cleared out. Throughout theseyears, roads have provided the means to penetrate theforest and eliminate large chunks of it. In anunpublished study of the Brazilian Amazon, researcherChristopher Barber found that 95% of deforestation inthe region occurs within 7 kilometres of a road. Onceconstruction begins, road crews are quickly followed byland speculators, loggers, farmers, ranchers, goldminers and others who carve away the forest along theroute. This creates great treeless expanses in thelandscape, but research is now showing that thebuilding of roads also triggers environmental changes inthe remaining forest that can dry out trees, set the stagefor wildfires, and weaken the ecosystem.

Which of the following can be said about theAmazon forest?

The state of Brazil had to build roads through it for thepeople who were settled in the forest.

Although it damaged the forest, the new highwayenabled the people of Amazonas to better travelto Peru.

From the 1990s onwards, 25,000 square kilometreswere being cut down every year to make way for thenew highway.

The rainforest has been suffering from a pattern ofdestruction in a scale it had not experienced beforethe 1970s.

Deforestation has not only affected Brazil’s easternand western borders, but it has also started to spreadthrough other countries.

Which of the following best describes therelationship between road construction anddeforestation?

Since the road crews work with a lot of parties to carveaway the forest, deforestation along the route is notaffected at all.

According to research on the Brazilian Amazon, a verylarge percentage of deforestation is a directconsequence of building the Trans-AmazonianHighway.

The highway and its branching roads were built toprovide the necessary means of penetrating the forestto erase the traces of deforestation.

Contrary to previous beliefs, research is now showingthat road crews also set fires and dry out the treesduring construction work.

Although trees were cut down for the highway resultingin treeless landscapes, this was limited to an area ofwithin 7 kilometres of a road.

One can conclude from the passage that the authormainly ----.

wants to warn the Brazillian state against the futureconsequences of their project of Trans-AmazonianHighway

tries to point that the environmental effects of buildingroads are confused with the ones caused by humans

informs the reader on the effects building a roadthrough the forest has on the local ecosystem

criticises people contributing to the deforestationprocess with their work

underlines the reasons why the Brazilian Amazonsuffers more than the other parts of the forest

Researcher: Yes, it's becoming more serious day by day. A UK

government report states that by 2050,antimicrobial resistance will cost more moneythan the current size of the world's economy, leading to catastrophes in food production.

Journalist: ----

Researcher: For example, if you buy a farmed salmon today,

chances are it will have eaten a greater weight ofantibiotics during its life than its own bodyweight.

Journalist: So, we can say that farming practices are perfect

for boosting antimicrobial resistance.

We know that farmers rely heavily on antibiotics. What is the reason behind their practices?

What can health scientists and clinicians do to sort outthe problem?

Can you tell us how antimicrobial resistance affectsfood?

Do you think food industries could collapse ifresistance spreads?

What else does the report warn us about?

Women are roughly twice as likely as men to sufferfrom stress-related psychiatric disorders, accordingto epidemiological analyses. The big question hasalways been: Why? Some experts argue that culturalfactors are at least partly responsible. For instance, women may be more willing than men to seek helpfor mental illness, making their cases more likely tobe counted. ---- Scientists are uncovering tellingdifferences in the ways that male and female brainsreact and adapt to stress.

But new evidence from research suggests that biologymay also play an important role.

However, scientists have studied more males thanfemales – even when investigating disorders.

Also, it is not only the stress-related disorders that aremore prevalent among women than men.

Similarly, animal studies have revealed significantdifferences in stress responses.

In fact, research has linked uncontrolled stress to awide range of mental health problems.

The coffee tree is an evergreen. It grows in about 70countries that offer suitable climates and altitudes.---- They are picked from the tree during harvest –they contain two seeds, which after processingbecome coffee beans. The main commercially growncoffee tree species are Arabica and Robusta. WhileRobustas are high-yielding and resistant to pestsand diseases, producing coffee cherries with rusticflavour, Arabicas are generally superior in flavour.

As botanists discover new species with interestingflavours, the family tree of coffee continues to grow.

The trees are cultivated with care, and grow for about3-5 years before they flower and produce fruit, knownas coffee cherries.

The movement of hot and cold air influences how thecoffee cherries mature and taste.

Many coffee varieties are genetically similar, but haveacquired different regional or local names.

The look and flavour of coffee are influenced by manyforces, such as soil, sun exposure and rainfallpatterns.
