So how do I become a member?

• You need to have been working hard in school, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

• You must maintain a GPA of 3.6 in all of your Spanish classes in HS.

• You should be a motivated student who enjoys speaking Spanish.

• You need to be a sophomore, junior or senior.

• You need to be currently enrolled in Spanish 4, 5, 6 or 7.• If you have completed Spanish 7 or are a native speaker

of sophomore standing or above, but are not currently enrolled in a Spanish class, you must complete your 10 annual hours of community service/participation in a place which requires you to use Spanish.

• You need to pay a one time enrollment fee of $20 to cover the costs of the charter and initiation ceremony.

SERVICE REQUIREMENTSERVICE REQUIREMENT• You need to verify annually that you have completed

your 10 hours of service/participation prior to the application due date.

• Your service may include: helping those who integrate themselves into our culture, helping with basic needs as well as assisting those trying to learn English, or helping peers who are struggling while trying to learn Spanish.

• Community participation/attendance at cultural events must be documented with a photograph of you at the event and will be recognized as one hour of time. If you feel that you deserve more than one hour, it must be cleared prior with one of the advisors.

• Attendance/participation in field trips will be recognized as one hour no matter how long the field trip takes.

• You must document (with signature & phone number) the adult in charge of your service position. This adult cannot be related to you.

What could I do

to serve others

in the

Latino Community?

• tutor an English Language Learner (ELL) in learning English and reading at one of the district elementary schools

• tutor an English Language Learner (ELL) in English or Social Studies at Hale.

• volunteer at a nursing home or recreation center which serves predominantly Spanish speaking clients, visiting and talking with the elderly people.

• seek out opportunities to volunteer in a health clinic which serves lower income, impoverished people or Spanish speakers.

• shadow and assist a Public Ally who works with the inner city community.

• volunteer at a local food pantry which serves a predominantly Latino population.

(ie. Milwaukee Rescue Mission, Second Harvest, SHARE, Hunger Task Force)

•Volunteer to work at Mexican Fiesta in August.

Since 1977 Mexican Fiesta brings a taste of Mexico to Milwaukee. Sharing Mexico’s history, food, and entertainment for three wonderful days, our public has responded with open arms to this festival every year. We have had breathtaking entertainers. Mexican Fiesta has become an enormous success with the help of the community and the thousands of people who attend this incredible festival.

• Volunteer to work a booth at State Fair for an organization which assists the Latino population.

• Serve your struggling peers by tutoring after school.

• (must have an “A” in current level & be pre-approved by teacher)

• Will be supervised by a teacher in library.

• Plan and execute an activity which promotes language and culture for many students. (Zumbathon 2010-2013)

• Plan and execute an activity which benefits the Latino Community and includes many students. (Toy drive for CCC)

• Participate in the Spanish Oral Forensics activities through the AATSP in January. (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese)

• Take the National Spanish Exam

• Plan and execute a school-wide celebration of foreign language week in March.

• Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity helping to build a house for a Latino veteran and their family.

• Plan and execute a rock concert for students of Spanish by bringing in a rock artist to perform a concert for the metro Milwaukee area.

• (This took a team of about 6 students at least 10 hours of service)

• serve others on a “human interACTion” while studying abroad on a school sponsored study/travel trip. (maximum 1 hour)

• Perform using your musical talents gratis, for those in a community or recreation center which serves predominantly Latinos.

• See Profe Geboy-Helfenstein, Room 272, or Profa. Santiago for approval of community service opportunities.

FYI:

• Since there is no money in the budget for the language honor societies, the advisors receive NO monetary compensation for the time spent organizing and carrying out membership, induction and other activities.

• Leading these societies are not positions like other Hale club advisors or athletic team coaches.

• Therefore, Profe Geboy-Helfenstein and Senora Santiago will occasionally be willing to offer organized group community service activities which occur outside of the normal school day.

• However, much of the SERVICE requirement must be initiated and carried out by the students themselves as proof of their leadership abilities.

• This leadership is demonstrated in their ability to find a service opportunity which they feel will best serve their future interests using the Spanish Language (preferably) or by assisting those in the local community.

• In order to be a member of La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, you need to

want to serve others.

• If you think you may qualify for Spanish NHS (because your semester grades have been consistently highA / B+),

please review them & then pass them on to Profe G-H or Señora

Santiago.
