CONSECRATION SUNDAY IS COMING

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes.

Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?”

On Consecration Sunday, we are asking our members to make their financial commitments to our church. Every member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily. We urge you to attend even if you are strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card. We will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards. We will make every effort to inform and inspire, everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.

I remember when I was a kid I so desperately wanted to grow. I would try to stand on my toes to give me that extra inch. If someone somewhere told me to eat something to grow I would. I wanted to control how much I would grow and the speed by which I would grow. Now, after awhile, I realized that my desire to control my growth was a bit silly. I could not control it. On the other hand, however, had I not eaten correctly, or any number of other unhealthy habits, I could have hindered my growth. I could have grown up malnourished or with other problems. I am thankful that my parents made me eat correctly and exercise and play. I didn’t always love it when they made me do those things, yet I appreciate them now.

On August 20th, we had our Rally Day here at St. John’s and revealed our theme for this next year: Growing in Faith Together, with the acronym “GIFT.” It can be challenging to talk about growing in faith. It can be hard to explain. Much like growing in height, it is something we can’t fully control. We can’t force ourselves to grow in the Lord faster. Yet, if we distance ourselves from God’s Word and from the fellowship of church we can hinder our growth. The illustration of a coal being removed from the fireplace that slowly becomes cool, is apt here. We cannot distance ourselves from the Lord and still grow in Him.

This is what made Rally Day, for me, so exciting. I know that we had a fun carnival with games and the like. It was a wonderful day and a wonderful time. However, what made the day even more wonderful, was all the people youth and adults that joined us for Church and Bible Class. It truly was a great example of us all growing in Faith together, by joining in the praise and worship of our Lord, and coming together to study even deeper the meaning of His Word.

We cannot force growth. The Holy Spirit causes us to grow, but we can surround ourselves with God’s Holy Word, and we can gather together to hear again God’s Word in church. I praise the Lord for all that God is doing here at St. John’s, and my continued prayer is that each and every one of us would continue to surround ourselves with God’s Word that we may ever Grow in Faith Together.

In Christ’s Love
