Introduction.

In recording the memorials and inscriptions of the church and churchyard of Stanhoe it must first be said of the church-yard, as with many others, that the scene it presents in 19S0 is very different from its aspect of a few years ago. Many gravestones have been removed from their positions there to facilitate mowing the grass, and used for economy's sake to pave and mend the floor at the west end of the church. Some of these are very decorative with foliage, putti, swags and skulls. All have been recorded as nearly as possible, three from an earlier reading when they were outside, and mentioned separately. Host were formerly positioned in the vicinity of the south side of the church and by the path leading to the Rectory.

The use of old gravestones for paving church floors is

no new thing and even the sale of old ones for re-U3e is well

known. For instance, in the Churchwarden's Account Book for

St.Nicholas Chapel, King's Lynn there is recorded in 1624 :

•Item, Kecd of Mr Thomas Girling, Alderman, for a gravestone

which is to be laid upon his mother in the church, six

shillings*. And in 1630: 'Item, Reed. of Mr Curtis for a

gravestone that was raised in the church under which the ris

n . Violett, widow was buried, .03.11.4.' .Evidently a large ono. Stone suitable for gravestone use is mostly absent in

Norfolk and it is said that those we see came mostly as ballast in the trading ships and barges to the many harbour towns along the coast.

Jther stones in the church, doubtless of great interest in revealing names of past important Utanhoe folic have been covered by the pews, fragments of which can be seen in the nave path and under the choir stalls in the chancel.

The large black, nameless slab at the top of the nave which shows a scallop shell only, covers the grave of Gir John Tracy, one time owner of a large manor in stanhoe, who was buried here in 1663.

According to Blomefield the church windows onoe blazed with the arms of former owners of stanhoe manors, namimg de Stanhoe, Tatteshall, Calthorpe, Clifton, Parker, Knyvett, Bouchier, Baxter. Other important names in Stanhoe a little later included Curson and Howman. I ^ W • H - ^ w n W ^ . ^ . t c .

The church's old font, pulpit and altar rails were * * * * < W ^ replaced in Victorian times to commemorate the Rev.Daniel W4M**»f& A Everard and his family who lived at Buraham Thorpe. He was the Rector of Stanhoe for sixty years, mostly absent during that time, leaving the parish to the care of a succession of curates. He was brought here for burial with his family in the ohancel in 1853.

The curates included the Rev. Philip ,ard in 1S23 who was the husband of Gratia Helson, two of whose children were baptized here- Lord Nelson's ubiquitous brother William, and the Rev. Kirby Trimmer, 1O37 who wrote the first'Flora of Norfolk'. The fern, ^lonl^j^^^ ±a still ^ ^ on

Sir John Tracy/

The family home of Sir John Tracy is Stanway House in Gloucestershire, the front of which is adorned on every available advantage point with stone scallop shells, the official badge of a pilgrim in medieaval times.

The Tracy who brought the name into history books was one of the four knights who slew Thomas a Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury/, in 1170. The penance for this crime was that a pilgrimage should be made to the shrine in Jerusalem. The family evidently became proud of the badge.

It is clear that Sir John rebuilt Stanhoe Hall when it became his home in the 1600s, decorating it with brick scallop shells, some of which after three hundred years and further rebuilding are still coming to light in the hall grounds and also in the garden of Bromley- Cottage.

NOTES OF INTEREST

The use of the Old Style lettering and numbering is noted.

It seems to have begun to die out around 1790 and to take

about twenty years to disappear, though there are later

examples elsewhere presumably by the more traditional

masons.

In Stanhoe, the examples are .st s_y ZJ-lj>^yofJonc i!7J8 1__* jsj, jhic Parijh -~ - - if06 Rare is the prefix 'MR'. This is on the gravestone of MR THOMAS BIDEWELL, (Grave No.79 in the yard). J J 7 6

All the graves in Barwick Churchyard (church closed c1550) are said to have been aligned N-S. The whole area is now under a conifer plantation.

FLORA and FAUNA.

Stanhoe Churchyard probably represents the only piece of

unploughed grassland remaining in the parish, and it retains

some of the plants which must have been widespread in the days

when sheep grazing was a principal feature of local farming.

On the south side of the old churchyard separating it from

the new graveyardt is a small strip of rough ground with mature

trees. This has its own flora and makes a good habitat for a

number of nesting birds. Between the old churchyard and the trees

is an old flint wall almost four feet high in places but now

partly derelict, while the wall along the Church Lane boundary to

the west, also of flint, was built in the last century and is in

good condition. Of the remaining two boundaries, that on the

north which adjoins a garden is part shrubs and trees with a low

fence, while to the east is a double row of trees, largely horse-

chestnuts. These were planted to commemorate Queen Victoria's

Golden Jubilee and are on either side of a footpath to the church

and burial ground. These trees are now about eighty feet high

and among them are a few older oaks, presumably part of the original

field boundary.

ThB newer graveyard (cemetery) is bounded by a beech hedge to

the west, a field hedge of hawthorn to the east, and a post and

wire fence to the south. Beyond this last fence is a stretch of

grassland at present amalgamated with the adjoining pasture but

actually belonging to the church and earmarked for a future graveyard

extension.

within the area covered by the churchyard and its boundaries

are a number of habitats; grassland, woodland, stone walls and

paths.

GRASSLAND.

The grass is cut regularly by a rotorscythe but is left

fairly high so the flora is not seriously altered. The most

conspicuous of the natural grassland plants are earthnut, sorrel,

germander speedwell and primrose with sweet vernal grass and

meadow foxtail dominant in late spring. Snowdrops, aconites and

apennine anemone are introductions, probably in the last century

while woodruff and cuckoo pint grow at the edge of the belt of

trees. The elms in the woodland strip are as yet (1981) untouched

by Dutch elm disease and with them grow beech and sycamore. The

presence of dog's mercury may indicate a relict area of old

woodland, but the ground has been considerably disturbed over the

centuries and ivy and bramble are now largely dominant. All the

Page 42: «Y - Stanhoe · DANIEL EVERARD/Recto r of Staahoe/an d of Burnha m Thorpe/wh o died Jany.23rd 1353/Age d 34 years . 24. Here lyet h the Body of/HENR Y EVERARD/Sldes t son of the/Rev

grassland and woodland areas are much undermined by moles.

Three common yews grow in the churchyard, one on the

north side of the church near the chancel has been cut back

many times in the past and is now 11*8" around its several

trunks, all of which appear to have once come from a single

bole, the second was planted in 1870 to overhang a tomb,

a third a strong-growing seedling on the N.w. boundary.

Seven Irish yews line the shortest path from the roadway to

the church. Other trees include two large sycamores and a

number of more recently planted ornamentals.

WALLS The old flint wall is .too crumbly to support a proper

of iva flora but with its coverings it provides a nesting place for spotted flycatchers. The road wall is clean with a good stone

capping but the church itself supports a small colony of the

maidenhair spleenwort, first recorded there in about 1840.

Hartstongue fern occurred until the 19703 when it was destroyed.

Jackdaws and pipistrelles inhabit the tower.

PATHS

These during the past ten years, along with the church

footings and gravestones have been regularly sprayed with

herbicide, so only a few annuals survive for long.

Because of its good surround of trees, the church is a

valuable habitat for wildlife, providing some niches not easily

found elsewhere in the neighbourhood.
