Easter Reflection

The season of Easter is quickly approaching. Maybe you’ve already seen candy and decorations filling the aisles of stores. It is often surprising how quickly Easter comes each year. I can only imagine how surprised Mary was when she went to the tomb with supplies to prepare the body of Jesus for burial only to realize that he wasn’t there!

The story of Luke 24 reminds us of Mary’s experience. She is pretty relatable. She saw Jesus died and wanted to help so she did what she could to care for Jesus even after his death. She was shocked to learn from the angel that Je-sus was resurrected. Then Mary and her companions be-came the first evangelists. They ran to tell the good news that Jesus Christ was risen to the disciples. Do you remem-ber what happened when they arrived? The disciples didn’t believe her! They thought she was telling them an “idle tale.” As we prepare our hearts for Easter may we remember that the good news of Jesus Christ means we too experi-ence resurrection, even when it seems too crazy to be true! May we ask Jesus to bring new life to the parts of our lives that are in need of resurrection. May God work through As-bury to bring the resurrection love of God to our community and world. May God inspire us as we retell and continue to live the story of Holy week to Easter! Christ is risen! Amen! Rev. Mike Luzinski

Walk with Jesus through the cross to the empty tomb: Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week and Easter

The holy seasons of Lent and Easter are upon us. It is a grand opportunity for the church to offer the world the opportunity to go deeper in life with God. Lent is traditionally known as a time of prayer, confession, repentance, fasting; basically going deeper in our relationship with God and each other. Unlike the feasting of Christmas, it is a time for fasting from some things to be ready to be filled with new life in Jesus Christ at Easter. We invite you to deepen your love for God and others during this time by engaging in the worship experiences and practices below. Holy Week and Easter walk with Jesus into Jerusalem, through the last supper, his betrayal, death and resurrec-tion during holy week. Through incredible music and powerful experiences like footwashing, communion, shadows, and sun-rise celebrations, you will experience the love of Jesus more deeply! Please come, and welcome friends! Asbury’s Anti-virus Response

A brilliant Pastor friend of mine recently reminded his congregation about King Ahaz’s message to God’s people when they faced an imminent threat…” Isaiah 7: 2 reveals how anxious the people were about an encroaching army “…the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.” King Ahaz then shared a message from God that was good for himself and Judah to remember: “Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint…” This is good advice for us today in the face of viruses like flu and Corona virus. Our media buys and sells our attention by exaggerating events of the day. If we con-sume popular media today without using our critical thinking it is easy to believe there is no God in heaven who cares about us, to believe that, indeed, the world is going to hell in a handbasket. God’s message to Ahaz and Judah is also a great message for us today. “Don’t panic or allow yourself to get upset…be quiet…don’t give in to fear or let your will grow weak.” In other words, with God’s helpful Spirit, choose to trust the Lord and don’t over-react to the bad news you hear. Save your will (heart) for seeking first God’s will and Kingdom, then we will have all that we need to do what God wants (Matthew 6: 19-34).” Yes, use common sense and be careful/thoughtful/make intelligent choices based on what you know. Below is what the Center for Disease Control recommends as reasonable preventative measures:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay home when you are sick at least 24-48 hours after your last symptoms. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or

wipe. Below are further measures Asbury UMC is taking to enact reasonable safety and health measures. We en-courage everyone at Asbury to:

*Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds *Keep your hands away from your eyes, ears, and nose. *Wave or flash a peace sign(make a V with your pointer and middle fingers) when greeting people instead of hugs or handshakes *Stay home if any symptoms of illness until symptom free for at least 24-48 hours or until cleared by a medical professional. *Sneeze or cough in your elbow *Make use of disinfectant gel stations being placed near entrances/exits on campus *Watch worship online if sick at home and let us know how we can pray for/support you *Clean/disinfect daily all hi touch surfaces daily using hospital grade sanitizer *stay up to date on the latest recommendations at: http://orange.floridahealth.gov/

Asbury leadership will certainly revise this plan as necessary based on recommendations from our leading health, safety, and government officials. Thank you for doing these things out of consideration for everyone! Peace of Jesus, Pastor Cameron

Each Sunday morning, Paul Schumacher brings prayer requests for any who are interested in praying for the inmates at the Central Florida Reception Center which is a part of the Florida Department of Corrections. This ministry is through Prison Fellowship. The Youthful Offenders are no longer housed at the CFRC, so they will be meeting with adult prisoners that come to the meetings voluntarily. They are sent there after sentencing and after evaluation, they are sent to other facilities around the state. Some are there for 3 to 4 weeks and others

are there more permanently. Paul is part of the ministry called Prison Fellowship. If you would be willing to take one or more of these prayer requests, please see Paul after the services. 2020 ALTAR FLOWER CALENDAR The 2020 Flower Calendar is available in the narthex for those wishing to give altar flowers in honor of or in memory of a loved one. Please print your name and how you would like the bulletin dedication to read. PLEASE PRINT THE INFORMATION LEGIBLY. If you select a date that already has a name by it, please contact the person to see if they would like to share the cost of the altar arrangement. Alternatively, a separate arrangement can be placed at the lectern in the sanctuary. Please notify the office if you are sharing the arrangement so the bulletin dedication can be properly noted. Flower arrangements are $50 for the two arrangements placed on the altar ($25 per arrangement if split.) THE CARING MINISTRY You only have to be a part of the Asbury community a short time to understand why ours is known as a “very caring church.” One of the many ways this is manifested is through our Caring Ministry that thoughtfully provides food for church families who have lost a loved one and have a service at our church. This is a very impactful way that we can pass on the love of Jesus Christ. Mrs. Joan Kessler has faithfully led this ministry at our church for countless years. Joan is updating her list of individuals she can call upon when she needs a plate of sandwiches, a cake, some fruit, etc. when the Caring Ministry is needed. Please consider adding your name to that list right now. You can call Joan at 407.628.1093 and give her your contact information or you can email it to the church office at [email protected]. Please know that a small effort on your part can have a lasting impact on a hurting family.

CHAPEL MINISTRY We are in need of help with our Chapel Ministry at the 2 assisted living facilities which we attend to bring services to these precious seniors. We need people who can fill in occasionally to do a message, play the piano and be a song leader. Please come to pass the love of Jesus on to these precious seniors. The residents look forward to us coming to minister to them and truly enjoy the services. Please call Susan Hoke 407-637-6857.

SUNDAY MORNING GREETERS An important aspect of our Sunday services is being given a warm, welcoming greeting as you enter our church. The one greeting is an opportunity to engage with fellow worshippers and any visitors. Their questions can be answered and general information given about church programs and Sunday school classes. A greeter can invite the visitor to return. I am looking for additional volunteers who have a limited amount of time and availability but would still like to participate in a service to the church. Greeting is the answer for you. Call the church office or email Sally Zarnowiec at [email protected] if you are interested in this fun and enjoyable service to the church. Thank you.

MISSION BILLBOARD HUNGERFORD RED BAG NEEDS: These bags are used to supply food for the Hungerford School Pantry. We will continue to distribute bags on the 3rd Sunday and return them on the 4th Sunday for delivery to the school shortly after. There is a box in the

narthex marked “Kicks and Coats for Kids” where you may bring new or gently used children’s shoes, coats, jackets, socks and gloves to be given out to the children at Hungerford. Sizes would be for children ages 6 thru 11. UM CHILDREN’S HOME: Are you looking for a way to use your hands and heart to serve God’s need? The Florida United Methodist Children’s Home has a Gift Shop and they need help in sorting and organizing the donations received in their Heart and Home Resale Shop. You can sit while sorting and it’s a great way to create a fun outreach for Mission. They’re located in the Big Lots Shopping Center, 2460A South Volusia Ave., Orange City. They are very flexible but suggest approximately 3 hours when you are there. This is a great support for the Children’s Home. If you think this fits you and are interested in volunteering weekly, monthly or any amount of time, please let me know: Patti Etzkin phone 407-355-0368 or [email protected].

BOX TOPS PLEASE keep on br inging box tops to church. Lake Orienta school really appreciates them. Basket is in the narthex hallway. No soup labels please.
