National Rope & Tie Champion at Muswellbrook Charity RodeoStory by Katrina Partridge
He may only be 20 years of age but Scone local Heath Nicols has already represented his country in rope & tie and steer wrestling in Texas. This followed him earning the title of 2011 ABCRA National Champion Rope & Tie; only 2 years since securing the Rookie Steer Wrestling Champion crown.Heath has spent more than half his life in the competitive rodeo arena. He started in Under 8 Barrel Racing, moved to breakaway roping at 10 years of age and by 16 he was also involved in competitive steer wrestling. Nowadays, like his father John, he is also a qualified pick up rider – a key role for ensuring the safety of bronc and bull riders.
In 2012 Heath’s dedication and achievements on the rodeo circuit were recognised when he received the Scone and Upper Horse Festival Young Achiever Award.
The National Champ. was back in the news two weeks ago for successfully roping a Brahman bull that had taken upon itself to escape from the 80th Murrurundi Rodeo and take refuge in the local bowling club.
And whilst there may not be a rogue Brahman in the frame come 20 October you can catch Heath at the Muswellbrook Charity Rodeo where he will compete in the team roping, rope & tie, and steer wrestling.
All proceeds from the Muswellbrook Charity Rodeo will benefit Muswellbrook Hospital Auxiliary. The rodeo will be held at Muswellbrook Showground on 20 & 21 October. The rodeo starts at 1pm with the junior & novice events, then some timed events, with the main performance kicking off at 6pm. The campdraft starts at 7am on Saturday and Sunday.

The talented rugby player and valued employee of Primo Smallgoods in Scone suffered serious head and back injuries, and had to have his left leg amputated after he was struck by an express train last month. He remains in hospital some 6 weeks after the accident but says he has been overwhelmed and humbled by the many messages of support and the generous donations that have already been received through the aptly named ‘Luck of the Irish’ Appeal set up by friends and work colleagues.
Monies raised through the appeal will help Gavin with the costs of ongoing medical care, rehabilitation and prosthetics that will be necessary to assist his recovery. Any excess funds will be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Intensive Care Unit of the John Hunter Hospital; emergency services that assisted in saving Gavin’s life.
The ‘Luck of the Irish’ Community Benefit will be held on Saturday 20 October at the Scone Rugby Club, Aberdeen Street, Scone from 1pm ‘til late.
The afternoon will feature a Hurling Exhibition (Semi Finals & Grand Final Matches) featuring our local rugby stars and professional players from Melbourne and Sydney. There will also be a special guest appearance by Sam Bailey, author of ‘Head over Heels’ - a story of tragedy, triumph and romance in the Australian Bush. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Sam’s inspirational story.
There will be free children’s fun and entertainment, live music, Irish games, a steak and sausage sizzle, bar facilities and Espresso coffee.
Entry is a $10 donation.

Poetry in Fibre ExhibitionA new exhibition at Islington’s Timeless Textiles gallery features the uniquely beautiful work of artist Pam Hovel.Pam is an innovative textile artist living near Bendigo, Victoria. Her light filled, mud-brick studio on her family property is surrounded by bushland and wildlife and it is this natural environment that both inspires Pam’s work and provides materials for her textiles.
Creating has been an integral part of Pam’s life, initially through necessity when she sewed clothes for herself and then for her children. Larger projects have also featured in Pam’s creative life. With her husband, she built their mud-brick home, many years before sustainability and recycling were buzz words. The home was built largely from reclaimed materials and is surrounded by a large garden, Pam’s passion prior to textiles.
A lifelong interest in textiles led Pam to discover felting in 2004 and she has been passionate about it ever since. Although she has attended numerous workshops with well-known felt artists, she is largely self-taught and has won awards for her work.
Following her creative instincts, Pam has sought sustainable art practices. After exploring different techniques and fibres, she developed a beautiful, soft felt fabric using super-fine Australian Merino wool. More recently she has focused on more feminine and highly artistic garments, marrying wool and silk in the felt process, as well as using raw and wild fibres with dramatic results.
Inspired by nature, Pam uses eco-friendly and sustainable dyeing practices in all her creations, with dyes derived from plants and sometimes enhanced by found metals. No harmful chemical mordents are used.
Wearing her truly organic garments, with their relaxed Australian feel, delights the senses.
Pam’s Poetry in Fibre exhibition will be opened from 6-8pm on Thursday, 18 October until 11 November 2012.
Details of workshops and upcoming exhibitions will be available on the Gallery website www.timelesstextiles.com.au or email [email protected] for more information or to be put on the Gallery mailing list.

Artwork Photography for Artists
Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre and Arts Upper Hunter are joining forces to bring a series of workshops together for artists from the Upper Hunter. Greg Weight, a well-known and respected photographer, will be in the Upper Hunter for two days conducting free workshops for artists on how to photograph their works for electronic submission to web sites, competitions and self-published books.

Greg has photographed artworks for many private and public institutions and artists for an extended period and he will be instructing artists on how to go about achieving an excellent result. The need for this workshop was amply demonstrated with the submission for the last two art prizes in Muswellbrook, where artists’ submissions were let down by poor quality images. This may or may not have had an impact on the outcome of their submission. With more and more art prizes now demanding electronic submission, more and more information being communicated electronically around the globe submission
to websites and used for the purposes of turning those images to print the timing could not be more pertinent.
Participation in these workshops will be strictly limited to ten per workshop, this is an absolute must. Bookings will be taken on a first in best dressed basis. Participants will also need to be computer literate as Greg will be using Photoshop for part of the workshop and the participants will be using it as well.
Dates & Bookings:
Workshop 1: Saturday 27th October 11am
-1pm. Community Technology Centre, 113 Mayne St Murrurundi NSW
Workshop 2: Sunday 28th October 11am- 1pm. Upper Hunter Community Services QEII Square, Market St Muswellbrook
Workshop 3: Sunday 28th October 3pm-5pm. Community Technology Centre, Bourke St Arcade 126 John St Singleton

The U.G.L.Y. Hunter
The U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year campaign is looking good with bartenders across NSW already hosting distinctive events to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Bartenders are battling it out from 1 October – 9 November in the quest to be crowned as ‘NSW U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year’ and are engaging with their community to support regional families impacted by leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders. U.G.L.Y. stands for ‘Understanding, Generous, Likeable You’. Jodie Dunn from the Rutherford Hotel is a truly U.G.L.Y. Bartender and she plans cooking up a storm to prove it. From 2pm this Sunday 14 October, the Rutherford Hotel will be serving a traditional Hangi - Rutherford Hotel style, which means the meat and vegetables will all be cooked to perfection in a keg rather than underground - and Jodie invites her locals to join her in an effort to support the Leukaemia Foundation. $5 from each Hangi sold this weekend will be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation. Local businesses in the Hunter have donated generously to Jodie in support of her fundraising efforts so there will be a stack of great prizes up for grabs if you’ve got the winning raffle ticket and all raffle proceeds will be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation. For further information about this event, contact Jodie at the Rutherford Hotel on 02) 4932 8241. The Hunter is a particularly U.G.L.Y. part of NSW with 17 bartenders competing for the U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year title. The bartender who raises the most funds will not only be crowned U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year but they’ll also win a tropical 6 day trip from Cairns to Airlie Beach including one night sailing in the Whitsundays valued at $3,500 thanks to Top Deck Travel. They will also earn for their venue a fully installed Hoshizaki ice machine valued at $7,500 thanks to Hoshizaki Lancer. All U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year competitors will stand out from the crowd in their t-shirts with ‘I’m U.G.L.Y – I need help!’ printed on them. You can find your local U.G.L.Y. Helicopters add to Pay’s Fire Fighting ArmouryPhotography by Katrina Partridge
The Monday of the October Long Weekend saw helicopter pilots and mechanical engineers from Pay’s Air Services converge on Middlebrook Station on the outskirts of Scone. Two helicopters - a HUEY and a Squirrel - were engaged in a series of training manoeuvres to test new fire fighting equipment, in particular the heil-bucketing system which will add further depth to the Pay’s existing squad of fire bombers.Pay’s currently operates 5 AT-802F aircraft for fire fighting. Pays has also operated
aircraft in Italy and Portugal. The aerial bombers are currently the largest capacity
fixed wing firebombing aircraft on contract in Australia and are unique in that they
are designed specifically for firebombing unlike other agricultural type firebombing
aircraft which are modified for the fire related work. Pay’s were the first in the world
to ever use the AT-802F for aerial fire fighting.
Professional photographer Katrina Partridge was on hand for Pay’s to secure a series of aerial photos from
the training session; a number of these images appear in this week’s Entertainer.
“It was an amazing shoot to be a part of,” commented Katrina. “In the morning I got to photograph the
choppers working in different terrain which included landing one of them on a remote mountain outcrop and
in the afternoon I photographed a series of heli-bucketing sessions.”
“The technical skill and expertise of the pilots is simply extraordinary. To see the helicopters shifting huge
bucket-loads of water and then dumping it on a defined target – and not missing by a centimetre - was
amazing.”
“Monday’s shoot was one of the most technically demanding aerial shoots that I have been involved in.
Fortunately the weather was good and the pilots were all fantastic to work with. The Henderson family also
put on an impromptu BBQ in the middle of the day which was much appreciated by everyone.”

Practitioners Inspire Health in SconePhoto and Story by Katrina Partridge
Scone Inspire Health has recently unveiled its new commercial premises. Formerly located in the Mare & Foal Mall, the Practice now occupies a spacious section of Campbell’s Corner in Liverpool Street - directly opposite the post office.A group of health professionals are on hand to deliver a range of services. These include podiatry, wellness care, fat loss, remedial massage, hot stone therapy, nutrition, and Bowen therapy. The Practice also employs the only naturopath between Tamworth and Maitland.
“We are committed to promoting comprehensive health solutions,” says business proprietor Karen Carter. “When people get a taste of what we do they realize that small changes can make a big difference to their health. Equally people need to be educated that a small amount of work done today cannot still be relied on in 6 months in terms of the benefits it may have brought at the time. Health is an ongoing journey.”
Scone Inspire Health is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturdays by appointment.
