February 28John GianvitoJohn Gianvito has lectured on film history at MIT. 'As well as beingpowerful canvases (Viola's) tapes are layered with strata of cultural andspiritual thought. March 28Bruce BaillieBruce Baillie, whose lyric, experimental films are known for their lushnessof texture and color, will screen Quick Billy, Castro Street, and All MyLife . Bruce Baillie 'rides through the wide spaces of the country, throughthe wide spaces of his memories, dreams, childhood, friendships, andwe who correspond sometimes with him, we do not even always knowwhere he is . He seems to be always on the road . But in the images ofhis films, he seems to be very stable and very sure and always goingafter some definite and, probably, always the same image. With eachfilm one feels maybe he found it . But no, the image, the dream is not yetcaught, still somewhere else-so he makes another film, trying to comecloser to it, from some other angle.' April 4Land of Silence and DarknessDirected by Werner Herzog, Germany, 1971'The heroine of this documentary is a 56-year old blind and deaf womanwhose job is to help others similarly afflicted . The subject may sounddepressing, but what comes out of this tender film is not her differencefrom us but, despite her handicaps, her similarity . And in some scenes-likethe one in which she introduces some blind people to an elephant-it ispositively delightful . A workshop in '/2" editing for persons with prior videoexperience. Included will be setup and operation of variousediting systems, use of auxiliary equipment, fine editing,organization of the editing process, and styles of editing .Enrollment is limited to eight people .

The Documentary, Women's and Editing Workshops willbegin the week of May 6 and run for eight weeks. Tuitionis $85 for individuals, $125 for persons whose tuition ispaid by a non-profit institution, and $175 for those whosetuition is paid for by a commercial organization . Uhlfelder says, "I have always paintedpictures that illustrated ideas I have aboutintimacy. I am currently working on twoseries of pictures . One series uses imagesof two dolls, Trevor and Harriet, based onreal people . The dolls find themselves incircumstances that seem a little off. Butsince they are dolls, their demeanor doesnot change with the situation . The otherseries pictures a pair of dogs in similarplaces . I use a variety of materials in themaking of the pictures : upholstery fabric,clothing, notions, broken furniture pieces,toys, and other cast-offs . The exhibition willexplore space, form, and symbolism throughpainting and sculpture .Painter Shirley Frank says of her latest

works, "In 1987 I discovered that cemeterytombstones were intriguing for their variedshapes and the curious way they related toeach other and to the landscape . Later, Ifound that although they are earthbound,their ethereal symbolism implies immortality.This duality is the impetus for the `stone'series," says Frank .The paintings of Claudia Ryan explore the

symbolism of everyday experiences . "In mywork I try to create symbolic equivalents forthe sensations and objects I encounter

everyday, as they filter through my experience ; in order to give them more reality,to capture their beauty, and to praise them," she says .Chris Scala explores space and form through the medium of sculpture . "Over the

past few years I have worked in wire cloth," says Scala . "Visually it is extremelydynamic when configured in a particular way or exposed to different conditions oflight . When two or more layers of cloth are fixed in parallel to one another a visualphenomenon known as the moray effect occurs . As the viewer moves past, one planechanges relative position to the other plane and as the openings in the cloth reori-ent a sort of shimmering path travels through the sculpture . The piece is vibrant andseems to contain its own power source as if electrified ."The squarish and gridlike character of this material lends itself to the spatial

analysis of objects . The limits of occupied space are defined, yet you may observe itis empty. By exploring these qualities I draw attention to the orderly, physical charac-teristic of the object and subject contained within to be analyzed . One sculpturecontains the affirmation YOU ARE COMPLETELY SAFE. This phrase reflects howcivilization requires order to function `safely' but in exchange constraints areimposed with measurable perimeters."

Theseartists create the same sense ofsingularity in their work usingstrong color interplay to createthe intense "push-pull" betweenthe object and the viewer that Itry to achieve in my own work ."My newest exploration is excit-

ing . . . I am creating collage, layer-ing colors, thoughts and textilesto paint a narrative . I am studyingthe work of Squeak Carnwath,Lynn Whipple, and DianeArvanites, all of whom havemastered the art of multi-facetedartistic, spiritual storytelling ."Ginnie Ungewitter says, "The

subject from which I paint issimple . . . oranges, still life objects,room views . My canvas is cloth,glass or paper . My palette is basedon five colors - alizarin crimson,cerulean blue, cadmium red light,cadmium yellow light, and ultra-marine blue . Color, form, value,and texture are combined tocreate my painting ."The first few strokes on a new

canvas are exciting . I know the fin-ished painting will be dramaticallydifferent from those first fewstrokes . The color will change aswill form, design, and texturebefore I can present on the canvaswhat I first envisioned."

Although the problems of representing space through mediacanhardly be called new, the range of thetechno-artistic tools now available point to some emerging strategies in thinking about art and the pos-sible future of artistic practice . The dramatic space itself has become an area under the supervision andsurveillance of electronic sensors, offering extensive opportunities, advantages and adventures in theexploration of such a space.Severalconcepts have emerged in recent years: computer generated space; the concept of an "extend-ed nervous system" connecting initiatives of a human protagonist to the organization and operation anelectronic "stage"; some extensive software protocols mapping or re-assigning human linguistic and ges-tural sets to new dramatic assignments; and the remote communication networking that extends thepractice of art to unforeseen territories, populating this artificial world with anewgeneration of spirits sim-

ilar to those in ordinary nature .Participants in this workshop will examine all aspects of the electronic image and the development of electronicmedia. Founders of the Kitchen in New York in1971, they were among the first to establish multiscreen video as an art form . As a concert violinist who was thefirst to integrate live interactive video into her musical performances, Steina has inspired a generation of high-tech performance artists . Woody is world renowned as a visionary pioneer of electronic image processing, andtoday, having moved into digital image synthesis and interactive multimedia, he remains on the leading edge .

In December of 1983, the firstOpen Dialogue Conference washeld in Washington, D.C . A secondOpen Dialogue Conference fol-lowed in May of 1985 in San An-tonio. . .where over 400 artists andarts administrators met to discussissues impacting the future direc-tion of the arts in America. Out ofthese two conferences, the Associa-tion of American Cultures (TAAC)and The Open Dialogues were born .The number of ethnic artists and

ethnic arts organizations are many.Some in their infancy, some longestablished Yet, even those withthe finest foundations and strongesttrack-records are not yet on parwith what is frequently called the"mainstream." TAAC and OpenDialogue provide a vehicle thatboth (1) facilitates the sharing of in-formation, thereby fostering thoseorganizations that are strugglingdesperately, to obtain equity, and

returned to Washington, D.C., fromJune 9-12. There was the usual setof workshops on fundraising,marketing and specific artsdisciplines . The principal focus waslegislative. Open Dialoguers con-verged on Capitol Hill for congres-sional forums, letting lawmakersknow their concerns regarding anational arts policy and fundingissues ."We registered 790 people this

year, nearly twice the number ofOpen Dialogue II participants,"celebrates Jane Delgado, conferencechair. Delgado is Executive Direc-tor of New York City's Association

of Hispanic Arts (AHA!) . "Thisturnout, and the incredible energy,indicates that the work of TAACcontinues to be relevant andresponsive to the struggle forcultural democracy. The level ofAnglo participation this year alsopoints to the fact that culturaldiversity, especially within majorarts institutions and governmentalarts agencies, is an increasingly im-portant concern."Mike Juarez, representing El

Paso's Juntos Art Association, at-tended open Dialogue III. "Thiswas a real awakening for me. Thelevel of networking was incredible,and especially important for some-one like me who labors in the rela-tive isolation of El Paso .
