Skate SnoutsAstoria, NY—Tiffany “Demoni-ca Mars” Morningstar has cre-ated a new accessory called “skate snouts” – a full-cover-age toe guard that protects the entire toe of the skate. Morningstar came up with the idea after a chunk of her skate got scraped off during an out-door roller derby training ses-sion; she wanted to develop something that gave her more protection.

These hand-made toeguards are made of thick, flexible leather that conforms to the shape of your skate. Skate snouts are available in solid black with no embellishment; or black with racing stripes or stars in a variety of colors. “[I] initially created them for protection,” said Tiffany. “But, [I] have found that many cus-tomers buy them to switch up the look of their skates.” Skate snouts costs $15 and are available online at: www.skatesnouts.etsy.com.

CeLEBRITY CoRNERTABI BONEY TALKS SKATING

XR: Did you rollerskate as a child?TB: Yes, I used to rollerskate every weekend or so! We used to go [skating] in a big van, full of kids. It was through the DC Department of Recreation…Langdon Park Recreation Center, to be exact. It was friggin’ fun!

XR: Do you still rollerskate? If not, why did you stop skating?TB: No, the last time [that] I rollerskated was in my video, “Syce It.” I don’t rollerskate as much [now] because I haven’t found the time and I don’t know of any cool skating rinks anymore.

XR: Did you know that your music is frequently played in skating rinks around the country? How does that make you feel?TB: Not at all…I never knew that [my music was played]. Is that true or are you trying to pump my head?!

XR: You mentioned that you featured rollerskating in one of you videos…TB: Yep, [for the song], “Syce It.” The video was aired on MTV and VH1. That was the first video [that] I had ever di-rected, too!

XR: Tell us about some of your upcoming projects. Do they involve rollerskating?TB: I always have upcoming projects, but none of them involve skating. [I] might do something with those shoes that let you kind of glide…they look like regular shoes, but have a wheel underneath [of] them. Does that count? (Boney laughs)•

2009 Influenza Outbreak H1N1 “Swine Flu”by Leah Bland

The United States has faced many major influenza (flu) outbreaks throughout the previous decades such as the 1918 Spanish flu, 1956 Asian flu and the 1968 Hong Kong flu. These three pandemics have taken the lives of roughly 778,600 Americans. In the spring of 2009, the United States came face-to-face with what the World Health Or-ganization (WHO) is considering a new influenza epidemic; Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (“swine flu”). The outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus began in Mexico, before spreading to the United States in late March 2009, where the first cases ap-peared in California. Toward the end of April, there was one death; hundreds of people either con-firmed or suspected of having the virus; and numerous schools clos-ing as fear ran nationwide. It was later confirmed by health officials that the outbreaks were mild and not spreading as severely as what was originally feared. In the beginning, H1N1 was referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory tests showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that usually appear in pigs in North America. However, further studies illustrated that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. H1N1 has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in

pigs in Europe and Asia, as well as in avian (bird) genes and human genes. Scientists call this a “quadruple reas-sortant” virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined that the H1N1 flu virus is contagious and spreads the same way that regular “seasonal influenza” spreads, which is throughout the air from coughs, sneez-es or touching individuals infected. It is important to note that this virus cannot be transmitted from eating cooked pork or by being in close contact with pigs. The symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus are similar to symp-toms of seasonal flu. These symptoms may include: fe-ver, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Studies have also shown that a significant number of people who have been in-fected by this virus have also reported having diarrhea and vomiting. Women who are pregnant or people that

have previous medical conditions have an increased risk of compli-cations from the H1N1 virus. The CDC has noticed so far that peo-ple 64 years and older do not yet appear to be at an increased risk for H1N1 complications. The CDC is not sure as to how serious this new virus is com-pared to other influenza viruses. Since this is a new virus, most people do not have immunity to it. Scientists know that seasonal influenza can cause mild to se-vere illnesses which, at times, can lead to death. In the United States each year, roughly 36,000 people die from flu-related complications and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related causes. To date, the CDC states that the largest number of new

H1N1 flu confirmed and probable cases have occurred in people between the ages of five and 24 years old. Cur-rently there is no vaccine to prevent infection of the H1N1 flu virus. The CDC continues to monitor the ongoing outbreak even though the number of outbreaks seems to be declining. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Ad-ministration (FDA) is currently working on a vaccine for the fall flu season as the United States is prepar-ing for a potential second wave. •

HealthAlert

There are actions that people can take ev-ery day to help prevent the spread of this virus. These steps include:

• Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

• Stay at home if you are sick for seven days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours.

World & FinanceSection

The President’s first 100 days were marked with eventful chal-lenges. Among those challenges were the auto-industry, two ongoing wars, and national security. To spearhead the econo-my woes, President Obama introduced a $787 billion econom-ic stimulus bill. The economy and the housing industry both continue to be key issues concerning Americans. During his campaign, President Obama promised to work swiftly to get several legislations passed. In addition, the Administration has changed the way the public interacts with the government. The White House website allows citizens to view upcoming legisla-tion and also leave their comments before a bill is passed.Within six months, the Obama Administration has accom-plished:

1. The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009. To help fight dis-crimination in the workplace, on January 29, President Obama signed his first piece of legislation. This act serves to eliminate unfair pay wages based on gender, race or age.

2. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This legislation helps Americans facing financial difficulties by preserving and creating jobs; stabilizing state and local govern-ment budgets; and providing investments to increase economic efficiency.

3. Children’s Health Insurance Reauthorization Act. Also known as the State Children’s Healthcare program, it will cover up to 11 million children nationwide.

4. Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. Designed to promote land conservation and also create new jobs in na-tional parks. Under the act, new programs will be implemented for the Department of the Interior. It protects more than 1,000 miles of the nation’s rivers and watersheds and also provides safety measures for polluted groundwater.

5. Small Business Act. The act expands capital access to small businesses. Small businesses have generated nearly 70 percent of net new jobs annually over the past decade.

6. Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act. Allows federal agen-cies, such as the Department of Justice, the means to prosecute individuals and financial institutions involved with predatory lending. The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission was created to investigate financial practices.

7. The Helping Families Save Their Homes Act. The introduc-tion of this bill stems from the Making Home Affordable program. The act provides $ 2.2 billion to address homelessness; protect renters in foreclosed homes; and establishes the right of a hom-eowner to know who owns their mortgage.

8. Healthcare. In an effort to bring the health care system up to speed, the government appropriated $19 billion in the stimu-lus package to begin an electronic records system.

9. Military Conflicts. President Obama plans to reduce the number of troops in Iraq by the end of August 2010; and will increase the number of troops fighting in Afghanistan.

10. Auto Industry. The big three U.S. automakers, Chrysler, General Motors, and Ford, have suffered tremendous finan-cial loss during this recession. Chrysler filed for Chapter 11 protection in April. Shortly thereafter, General Motors filed for bankruptcy protection on June 1. The filing is the fourth largest in U.S. history and the largest for an industrial company. The federal government will invest $30 billion in financial assistance to General Motors and obtain 60 percent ownership in the com-pany. Ford mortgaged its assets in 2006, which allowed the company to avoid bankruptcy.

The following issues are currently on the President’s agenda:1. The appointment of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomay-
