Schools open, traffic jamsBangkok motorists slowed to acrawl during rush hour in manyareas yesterday as primary andsecondary schools openedtheir doors for a new academicyear.

Deputy Metropolitan PoliceCommissioner Maj-GeneralPanu Kerdlarpphol said roadsthat linked Krung Thon Bridgeand Taksin Bridge were themost congested between 6amand 8am.

Skytrain ignoredCars were still bumper to

bumper in Thon Buri’s WongWian Yai despite the openingof the new Skytrain route overthe Chao Phya river.

“Most parents didn’t switchfrom driving their children toschools as parking lots at thenew stations are not yet avail-able. So the traffic wasjammed in the area and alongthe Taksin Bridge-SathonRoad route,” Panu said.

Other congested areasincluded Samsen andSukhumvit, where several largeschools are located.

“All in all, due to theabsence of rain, the jams forthe opening day of schoolwere less heavy than last year,”said Panu.

He added that trafficpolice, traffic volunteers andmunicipal officials were help-ing ease traffic all over thecapital, especially in front ofbig schools.

Police were at schools toencourage parents to findalternatives to driving theirkids to school or at least spendless time around theentrances.

Panu will board a helicop-ter this morning to pinpointtraffic hotspots and seek solutions to the problem.Wannapa PhetdeeD A I L Y X P R E S S

Atiny underwater cameramay soon slip through a

hole in a mysterious containeron the seabed off Chon Buri’sSattahip district to check whatis inside.

“We have found a hole in thecontainer through whichgroupers swim in and out,”Central Institute of ForensicScience director Porntip Roja-nasunan revealed yesterday.

Skulls discovered Porntip has been assigned to

investigate the containers afterrumours spread that the bodiesof those who died in the BlackMay incident were inside. ChonBuri’s Samaesan district chief

Pramote Towsakul said localpeople had in the past discov-ered human skulls in sunkencontainers but were too scaredto report to the police.

Porntip’s team has alreadylocated one of the containers. After examining the size of thebarnacles attached to the con-tainer, officials say it has prob-ably been on the seabed formore than 20 years.

This prompted PrimeMinister Abhisit Vejjajiva topoint out that the mysteriouscontainer could not be relatedto the Black May incident, which took place 17 years ago.

In 1992, pro-democracystreet protesters in Bangkokfaced a violent crackdown

from which many never re-turned home.

Port Authority of Thailandacting director Sunida Sakul-rattana said her agency wasporing over old files to identifya company found carrying con-tainers of industrial waste intoThailand’s seas about two or

three decades ago. “Officials turned a ship away

for carrying industrial wasteinto Thailand without permis-sion. Now, we have to find outwhether the ship secretlydropped the containers on itsway out,” Sunida said.

Customs Department direc-tor-general Utid Tamwatin saidif officials could see the serialnumber of the container, theywould be able to identify itscontents and origin.

Meanwhile, the chairman ofthe Committee of the May 1992Heroes’ Relatives, Adul Khiew-boriboon, has submitted a let-ter urging the army to returnthe remains of protesters.

He said three generalsshould know where the re-mains are located. “The threegenerals were involved in theBlack May incident. Theyshould know the answer.”

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The public disgrace hasbeen without precedent

for a member of this Gulfcountry’s ruling family: first, the government publicly ac-knowledged that the halfbrother of the president hadappeared in a torture video. Then it ordered his detentionwhile a civil lawsuit movedahead in the United States.

But it’s the private delibera-tions over Sheik Issa binZayed Al Nahyan that couldbring the biggest test for theEmirates’ long-enshrined two-tier system of justice.

The dilemma for Emirates

officials is whether to breaktradition and order a court-room trial for a member of theruling elite as demanded byinternational rights groups, orwhether to remain loyal totribal codes and render anypossible punishment awayfrom the public eye.

‘Sodomy and beating’International rights groups

have demanded a full andopen inquiry into the five-year-old video, released byone of Issa’s former businesspartners as part of a lawsuitfiled in Houston. The suitcharges Issa and other mem-bers of the ruling Al Nahyan

family with false imprison-ment and torture in an attemptto get back the tapes.

The former partner, Texasbusinessman Bassam Nabulsi, says the video shows the sheiksodomising and brutally beat-ing an Afghan merchant who,Issa claims, cheated him on agrain deal.

Issa is the half brother ofAbu Dhabi’s ruler and UAEpresident Sheik Khalifa binZayed Al Nahyan.

Issa had entrusted Nabulsi, the sheik’s personal businessmanager, with the tapes, his fi-nancial records and invest-ment documents before theirfalling out.

Nabulsi’s US-based lawyer isconvinced the sheik’s case willnever get to court and doubtsIssa will ever be punished.

Montreal-born DJ andturntablist A-Trak, real

name Alain Macklovitch, wasviewed as the prodigy of the’90s, picking up five worldchampionships as he built hisskills and performed alongsideKanye West.

Tomorrow night he’ll be inBangkok, manning the deck atQ Bar and mixing his refreshinghybrids of hip-hop and technotunes.

He found time to trade e-mails with us before boardinghis flight.

What are you working on now? Lots of stuff, as always! I’m

doing a remix for the Yeah YeahYeahs that I’m really excitedabout because I love the song. Ijust recorded a project withArmand Van Helden by thename of “Duck Sauce” and I’mstarting to plan an A-Trak al-bum!

Still touring with Kanye West? I stopped touring with him a

year ago but I still collaboratewith him from time to time. Ijust recorded some scratchesfor a song he did with Kid Cudi,Common and Lady Gaga called“Poker Face”.

How did it all start?I started with the technical

stuff when I was 13, experi-menting on my dad’s recordplayer. The first couple of yearsof my career were devoted tolearning all these techniquesand entering competitions. Astime went by, I gradually gotmore interested in playingrecords and rocking parties.

What’s your favourite tech-nique?

I love beat juggling – takingtwo copies of a record and rear-ranging the music to make newpatterns.

Who’s your idol? I look up to my older brother

Dave, both on a musical level anda personal one. He’s really giftedand a very inspiring person, I’mlucky to have him around.

Might you collaborate with yourbrother’s group Chromeo?

Chromeo and I have collabo-rated many times. We just don’tmake a big deal out of it. Irecorded the scratches on theirfirst big hit “Needy Girl”, but Idid it under an alias (Kool DJAlain M) because they askedme to scratch like it was 1982.

What’s the show at Q going tobe like?

Fun! Expect to hear a widevariety of music, lots of stuffyou never heard before, and itwill probably move very fast.

There’s something famously ad-dictive about Peggle, a game

that's been a hit on everything fromthe personal computer to a variety ofmobile phones. Developer PopCapsays that free sample PC versions ofthe popular title have been down-loaded 50 million times (the numberof actual purchases is a subset ofthat figure that the company de-clines to disclose).

Now the game is about to appearon the iPhone, news that may bodepoorly for the productivity levels ofthe device’s owners. When the techculture blog BoingBoing took noteof the coming launch, the an-nouncement seemed to inspire anamount of despair among its read-ers.

This month, Apple’s App Storecracked the billion-download mile-stone — remarkable for an onlinestore that has been open less than ayear. So far, games and entertain-ment titles such as Peggle havebeen the store’s most popular cate-gory, but as Apple tends to sharelittle data about App users exceptfor a list of the store’s latest offer-ings, we turned to advertising soft-ware and research firm Medialets, which tracks usage of applicationson mobile devices.

Medialets has some findingsabout behaviour trends among1,000 App Store users who agreedto install the company’s trackingprogram on their devices. Whilethe company wouldn’t identify theusage and sales performance of

specific iPhone Apps, the findingsprovide an early sketch of this newindustry’s consumers.

According to Medialets, you’ll bemore likely to see your fellow com-muters playing Peggle on the bus ortrain home from work: apparentlyentertainment applications areused more at the end of the day.

Developer PopCap, which plansto release the new version ofPeggle this month, may enjoy asmall, early lift in sales thanks tothe upcoming Memorial Day holi-day.

Weekends, especially three-dayweekends, are when iPhone userstend to be most active in download-ing new applications.

Even at $4.99, Peggle likely willappear near the top of the chartswhen it debuts at the App Store.Peggle has already been a strongseller on every device it has ap-peared on, and PopCap seems de-termined to get this title onto everygadget imaginable.

AFP, London

Chelsea coach Guus Hiddinkbid an emotional farewell

to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but warned his successor he’llneed to spend big money if theLondoners are to stop theManchester United juggernaut.

Since being drafted in to re-place Luiz Felipe Scolari,Hiddink has narrowly missedout on a Champions League fi-nal spot, guaranteed a top fourleague finish and could still winthe FA Cup. But the Dutchman

insists that Chelsea don’t yethave a squad capable of com-peting with United who re-tained their English PremierLeague title on Saturday.

He believes the new managerwill need more strength indepth to overhaul the champi-ons.

“When you want to compete, you have to renew your squadalmost every year,” he said. “Tobe realistic in the upcomingyears we have players who areageing.

“It is up to the new manage-ment. It’s my humble advice tobring in even more depth, butpeople in the club know that.

“For the FA Cup, League Cup,

Premier League andChampions League, you need asquad of real depth in quality. You need to be able to use a lotof players, like ManchesterUnited.”

He admitted he will be haunt-ed by a nagging sense of regretwhen he walks away fromChelsea after the FA Cup final.

“I have many secondthoughts. Sometimes thirdthoughts. You cannot avoidthem,” he said. “You do nothave a button to turn them off,but that is how it is.

“When I have to leave and Isee the reaction of the playersand how they have worked, Ifeel a kind of sadness.”

HEY, BLUE SPENDERSExiting Hiddinksays Chelsea mustbuy to stop United

Barcelona coach PepGuardiola played down his

role behind his team’s leagueand Kings Cup double, prefer-ring to heap the praise on hisplayers.

In his debut seasonGuardiola, 38, lifted Barcelona’sfirst domestic double since1998, but coyly shrugged off theplaudits.

“With other players I wouldnot be a champion but they cer-tainly would be with anothercoach,” said Guardiola.

“I appreciate the praise but itis the talent of the players andtheir humility to work hard thathas taken us this far.

“I have to pay tribute to themand I would also like to congrat-ulate Real Madrid for bringingout the best in us.

“In the second half of the sea-son they gave us a lesson in howyou should always carry onlooking forward.”

Guardiola won six league ti-tles as a Barca player, but thiswas his first as a manager andhe admitted the achievementfelt strange.

“It is similar feeling but nowthere is this fictitious authoritywhere it seems you give the or-ders but don’t carry them out,”added Guardiola.

After two years without a tro-phy under Frank RijkaardGuardiola came to Barcelona ata difficult time and strikerSamuel Eto’o said it was an in-spired appointment.

“Guardiola is just want weneeded after two difficultyears,” said Eto’o. “He hashelped us to discover what wasmissing.”

Barcelona were saluted aschampions as Real Mallorcalined-up a guard of honour atthe Ono Stadium on Sunday be-fore gatecrashing the title partywith a 2-1 win.

Eto’o gave Barcelona the lead, but missed a last-minute penal-ty which would have salvaged apoint.

Barca rested key stars such asLionel Messi and Xavi, with theChampions League final againstManchester United on May 27still to come, and several home-grown talents started againstMallorca.

“I can’t reproach the team atall,” said Guardiola. “We had a

lot of players who had notplayed much and they had totonight. Eto’o had his chances, including the penalty miss, but Ican’t fault him as he has scoredgoals all season and will contin-ue to do so.”

Elsewhere, Atletico Madridtook pole position in theChampions League race with a1-0 home win over rivalsValencia.

Diego Forlan scored from thepenalty spot on the half hourmark for his 28th goal of theseason just one behind Eto’o inthe goalscoring charts.

Atletico leapfrog Valencia in-to fourth holding a two-pointcushion over both Valencia andVillarreal with just two gamesleft and are on course to qualifyfor the Champions League forthe second successive season.
