Business Architecture
Why (only) now?
It is a long running trend which already peaked in 2005.
E.g. 2006, Ross, Weil, Robertson,
Enterprise Architecture As A Strategy.
But…we see that only the last couple of years most
companies are really investing in it…
Why only now?

Remember 15 years ago….
« We need an IT Roadmap! »
… and sell it to our business!
IT needs predictability for long running and expensive
investments and get the IT portfolio under control:
“Wouldn’t it be a good idea…”
• To make an app, an e-commerce website, EDI, etc…
• To renew our legacy
• To get a customer 360
Question: Are we still working like this today?

Are we still working like this?
We are not!
Today we are:
• Putting value for the organisation first
What is the change for the way of working, the people
etc…?
• Putting the customer in the picture
Where is the value for him?
• No longer Application / IT Capabilities - centered.

Are we still working like this?
We are not!
It was not because we did not want
to describe the business impact!
• We came with questions where the answer should be
given by a missing capability in the organisation.
• The missing capability is to make the conversion from
strategic objectives to make impact to the
organization, processes explicit.

From 2010 on…
Digital Transformation kicks in!
• Companies thinking outside-in.
• Technological evolutions create
new business opportunities.
• Value based processes start to emerge.
• Companies acknowledge that there are different
ways to accomplish change, taking different
approaches in Customer Intimacy, Operational
Excellence and Innovation projects.
What do they all have in common?
They have a measurable business impact !

Digital transformation
results in…
• Increasing importance of having the capability to
describe business impact to get transformation done.
• The need for Business Architecture,
a method for directing change, insights and
supporting the right decisions on:
• Strategic level (3-5 years)
• Tactical level (0-2 years)
Companies today take different approaches and stages!
