Xpedition2 - Overview

XPEDITION2 is an online mapping and route planning WebApp brought to you by the

makers of Satmap Outdoor GPS devices.

XPEDITION2 works best on Windows and Mac desktop and laptops, but also works

very well on tablets and smartphones.

Its main purpose is to provide outstanding online topographic mapping and route

planning tools for outdoor adventures.

These routes (along with POIs (Points of Interest) and shapes) can be easily saved and

organised into a standard folder structure. Folders and routes can easily be

reorganised using drag-and-drop.

Once completed, these routes can easily be downloaded and and transferred to any

GPS device (including smartphones and tablets that support the universal GPX

navigation file format. Owners of the Satmap Active 20 GPS units have the facility to

wirelessly download and upload routes from and to Xpedition2.

This planner is currently offered in two versions: a standard, free version and a

premium version with extended map coverage and enhanced routing features.

many respects they are very similar.

Tracks and Routes.

bike(path) or road”

Route start-point

Click (or touch with tablet/smartphone) to

create new route and points along tracks and

roads.

N.B. where there are minor differences

between the route as seen on the O.S. map

and the snapped route, this is due to the

routing machine using a global route network

for this function.

Top-Tip : “Snapped” routes are generally

quicker to create and more accurately follow

any given track or road then straight-line

routes.

• Routes are “auto-named” initially, just over-type to change the name.

• “My Stuff” is the root location for saving objects.

• Folders are listed on the left hand side panel,

• … individual routes, POIs and shapes are listed on the right-hand side panel.

• Use the “+” icon to create folders and sub-folders as required.

Xpedition2 – Export a route

To export an individual route, press the “download” icon.

Then re-name if required and select either GPX or TCX file format

(depending on your GPS device), and press export.

This will then allow the file to be saved to your PC / Mac / tablet /

smartphone, where it can then be sent onwards to a GPS device.

N.B. Some GPS devices work better with

GPX “Tracks” rather than GPX “Routes”. In

many respects they are very similar. The

Export function allows downloads to be

formatted as “tracks”.

Xpedition2 – Create lots of routes, shapes & POIs at once

In this example, we have created

a primary route (Skiddaw Loop),

then an alternate route (Short-cut),

plus 4 Check-Points and an “Out-

of-Bounds” area.

All of these “objects” can be

downloaded as a single GPX/TCX

file or as separate files.

As an individual file it will have just

one name, as separate files, they

will have the names given in

Xpedition2.

Xpedition2 – Split screen function

The Split-screen function is a great tool for easier route planning.

This allows the map to be seen in two panels. Each panel can operate independent from the other : i.e.

different map style, different zoom, and different centre points. A central slider allows for reciprocal panel

sizes.
