When you’re looking for a motorcycle that offers the right balance of
performance, reliability, versatility and value, few machines can match the XJ
line-up. And with two 600 cc models and one 900 cc machine in the 2002
Diversion range, you can choose your own direction.
At the heart of each bike is a DOHC in-line four cylinder engine that delivers a
band of smooth and responsive power. Simple yet efficient, these robust air-cooled
motors are ideally suited to everything from urban commuting through to weekend
leisure riding and long-distance touring.
For strong all-round handling performance the XJ models are equipped with a
highly rigid twin-loop double cradle frame and flex-resistant swingarm – while
their triple disc braking systems ensure reliable and progressive stopping power.
And with their upright riding positions, plush front and rear suspension
systems and long dual seats – as well as aerodynamic cowls on the XJ900S
and XJ600S models – each one of these stylish street bikes comes out on top
in the comfort league!
Choose your own direction
Functional and stylish, the XJ900S Diversion is one of the few large-capacity bikes that really
can be described as a true all-rounder, and much of this proven machine’s legendary versatility
is due to the design of its in-line four cylinder engine.
(1) Displacing 892 cc, the air-cooled powerplant pushes out a wave of extra-smooth power
across a wide rev range, and its ability to pull strongly from low engine speeds makes for
relaxed touring. But when you’re in the mood the XJ900S can be wound open to reveal its
sportier side, and make no mistake, this motorcycle can really move quickly when you
want it to!
(2) But what really gives the big Diversion an advantage is its clean and quiet shaft drive
system that requires little routine maintenance, and is a ‘must have’ item for many long-
distance riders. Add to that the engine’s rugged and relatively simple construction, and it’s
obvious why the XJ900S has established itself as a firm favourite with many discerning
customers who are looking for the right balance of performance, specification and value.
(3) Chassis design has also been shaped by our desire to create a machine with leading
all-round performance, and features a twin-loop double-cradle frame manufactured from
thin-walled tubing. Light and rigid, this structure delivers easy steering together with strong
roadholding qualities in solo, two-up, sports and touring situations.
Whether you’re riding long or short distances, comfort is always important, and this is
another area where the XJ900S scores well. The combination of a long dual seat, upright
riding position, rubber-mounted

cowl make for stress-free touring –

XJ900SJust take a closer look at how much the XJ600S and XJ600N have to offer and you’ll see why
one of these middleweights is the bike for you.
(1) To help minimise running costs and ensure high levels of reliability the 598 cc DOHC
in-line four cylinder engine benefits from the use of tried and tested technology – such as
air cooling and simple two-valve heads. Delivering a broad band of smooth, easy and
responsive performance, this proven slant-block powerplant is ideally suited to a wide
range of riding situations, including daily commuting, weekend sports riding and
long-distance two-up touring.
(2)(3) Although the XJ600S and XJ600N are identical in most respects, the one major
difference between the two machines is that the S model features an aerodynamic cowling
for reduced wind blast at higher speeds, making it more suitable for covering longer
distances. And with its unfaired bodywork, the understated XJ600N is aimed at those riders
who spend more time in an urban environment.
(4)(5) Another difference between the two models is the instrumentation, and while the
XJ600S is equipped with a console tucked in behind the lightweight windscreen, the XJ600N
is fitted with dual chrome pods. Both models feature a speedometer, tachometer and range
of indicator lights, all of which are designed to display easy-to-read information.
(6) These machines are built to deliver strong all-round performance whether they’re being
ridden in congested cities or along open highways, and to ensure strong roadholding and
good cornering performance in a wide variety of riding situations both models run with a
rigid twin-loop double-cradle frame featuring widely-spaced top tubes.
(7) Flex-resistant 41 mm front forks and a Monocross rear suspension system on the XJ600S
and XJ600N have been designed to give leading levels of rider and passenger comfort with
confident roadholding characteristics. And with large-diameter dual front discs and a light-
weight rear disc, braking is reliable, powerful and progressive.
(8) Heated grips (optional)

Featuring non-scratch magnetic mounts, the easy-
