welcome Welcome to the new city of Perth. We say new, as things have been moving rather quickly in this fi ne ol’ city of late. Once hanging its hat on the moniker ‘The City Of Lights’, today Perth is more ‘The City Of Life’ – a metropolis well and truly on the rise, and transforming by the day. The skyline may still be evolving at breakneck speed, but Perth’s clearly defi ned itself as a major city on the Australian map; as unique in its location as its lifestyle. No other city in the country boasts as good a lifestyle as Perth; a land where the ocean meets the city and the weather itself is cause for celebration. Whether it’s the noble Swan River, dazzling King’s Park, rustic Rottnest Island, colonial Fremantle or the world’s fi nest beaches, Perth is a city that makes you want to live! But while we could boast all day about the beauty of Perth, the city’s cultural and party scene well and truly match the stunning setting. A hot spot for musical, arts and fashion talent in Australia, Perth is a must-see destination for cultural junkies keen for a fi x of the best the country has to offer, or simply after a good time. In short, Perth is like nowhere else on earth – make it yours. Happy travels, and we’ll see you out there!

INaGOLDENstate If you’re reading this you are already in Perth.

And if you’re already in Perth you know exactly what we mean when we say Perth is a drinking town. The weather’s warm – well, bloody hot if you’re not accustomed to the sizzle – and there’s no better way to laze away the afternoon than with a pint after a long day in the glorious sunshine. While you can easily fi nd brands from across the globe in liquor stores and bars the city over, one of the fi ner ways to sample Perth is to drink your way through it – literally. For a medium-sized city Perth boasts a world-class range of home-grown breweries and wineries. When it comes to beer the specialities remain the lagers (for those endless sunny days) and ales (a welcome hangover from our British heritage), plus a good range of local pilsners, stouts and other more exotic varieties of thee blessed trilogy of hops, yeast and malt… oh, and water of course. Perhaps the most infamous of WA breweries, Little Creatures in Fremantle has grown from a dream and a shack into one of the most celebrated micro breweries in the country. Now sprawling across Fremantle’s stunning Fishing Boat Harbour, Little Creature’s Pale Ale is legendary, with the Bright Ale, Pilsner and mid-strength Rogers right behind (all perfect matches for

14

Page 15: X-Press Pocketbook #3

Creature’s rather tasty pizzas). The Swan Brewery, Sail & Anchor and Matilda Bay Breweries are three more established and well trusted names in the craft of brewing, and can be found in various watering holes around town (Matilda Bay’s mighty Redback wheat beer is a true WA icon). But a recent rise in micro brewing has seen a range of from-the-keg-to-the-glass gems pop up city-wide, including Mash and Feral Breweries in the Swan Valley, where you’ll fi nd many wild and wonderful takes on the humble brew. And make sure to check out Elmar’s and The Duckstein Breweries in the Valley while you’re there for some more traditional German-style beers. The Swan Valley is also the home of the grape. While Margaret River may be WA’s most celebrated wine region, the Swan Valley packs a decent punch with feisty Mediterranean climate wines across classic Aussie varieties such as Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, plus a number of fortifi eds inspired by the region’s Italian and Slavic heritage. While fl agship names such as Houghton and Sandalford are known and enjoyed worldwide, take the road less travelled and you’ll be highly rewarded. Sittella and Upper Reach Wineries are two of the Valley’s fi ner boutique wineries, where you’ll truly get to indulge in WA’s unique terroir. Happy drinking! JULIAN TOMPKIN

NORTH PERTH

Situated just to Perth’s east, Mount Lawley is the postcode to be amongst Perth’s more discerning locals. Home to an inner-city cocktail of professionals, artists, students and fashionistas, Mount Lawley has a wide range of restaurants and bars to match. Whether you want cheap and nourishing or outrageously pricey and opulent, Beaufort Street – the main strip – has it all, and more. Mount Lawley also boasts a heady selection of fashion outlets – including many acclaimed local brands – plus book shops a-plenty, enough coffee shops to send you into a spin and a truly palpable sense of coolness in the air. If you want to be seen, but not seen at the same time; then Mount Lawley is where you should be chaining your retro-chic pushbike.

A euphemism for style, they don’t come classier than glorious ol’ Subiaco. The once working class heartland of WA, Subi – as it’s affectionately known by the latte set – is now the centre of chic style in WA; packing a hefty – and haughty – number of fashion boutiques, cafes, bars and restaurants onto its two key intersecting streets; Hay Street and Rockeby Road. From designer stores to exquisite hole-in-the-wall restaurants, if your budget is generous and your heels extra high then steer your shiny new sports car straight to the bright lights of the little suburb just west of the city!

How often do you hear so-and-so has “the best beaches in the world”? Too many, we know! Well, with Perth you’d better believe it. So good are Perth’s legendary beaches that Spain was recently sprung using them in tourism advertisements, passing them off as their own. But you can’t blame them – our beaches are literally second to none. From Mullaloo in the north right down to Fremantle in the south, Perth’s beaches are defi ned by their crystal aqua blue waters, the endless horizons, fi ne white sand and legendary sunsets. Nothing – absolutely nothing – beats a pint at the Ocean Beach Hotel in Cottesloe as the sun plunges into the magnifi cent Indian Ocean. Pack your suncream and get ready for paradise.

Once WA’s best-kept secret, the world has well and truly rediscovered the charming little port city colloquially known as Freo. Relaxed is an understatement! The air is different in Freo; people walk at a different pace. Freo is all about the good things in life (sans pretensions): fi sh’n’chips and a beer in the fi shing boat harbour while the seagulls circle overhead; the perfect Italian cappuccino on South Terrace amongst the old Italian blokes who have been chillin’ Freo-style decades; and a late arvo pint of Pale Ale, with some grilled kangaroo, over at the iconic Little Creatures Brewery. With the famous markets, a brilliant range of Mediterranean-style restaurants and the best selection of pubs in the state, Freo is – quite simply – a must!

One of the fi nest entertainment strips to emerge in the past couple of years, Oxford Street has just the right blend of coolness, charm, practicality and sophistication. Whether you’re dolled up to the hilt or sporting the bohemian chic look – complete with fl ip fl ops – it’s all dandy, as anything goes in Leederville. And when the sun goes down the night creatures come out to play – and play hard! If you want to be untamed, then Leederville’s your hood.

EMMA BERGMEIER

Home to beautiful beaches and massive mineral deposits, sunny Western Australia also boasts a vibrant fashion industry populated by a range of incredibly talented designers. Despite their isolation from the rest of the world, designers from WA continue to push the boundaries of fashion, making headlines with creations that range from avant garde to extremely wearable. A range of boutiques across Perth support local talent by stocking a variety of home grown labels, making it easy as pie for shoppers to nab themselves a garment designed and made right here in the wild west. To get your hands on designs from labels such as Poppy Lissiman, Stand International, Petals In Disarray, Sophie Kyron, Elementree, Faux Pas and many others, make a bee-line for Method in Mt Lawley. Located at 557 Beaufort Street, Method is one stop for anyone interested in supporting local design talent. Situated in the heart of Subiaco, Merge Clothing is also home to a selection of local and national labels, including the likes of Generics, Zanthus, Cinde Rocker and Story By Tang. If you’re hunting for contemporary womenswear that’s on trend, be sure to check out Merge at The Colonnade at 388 Hay Street in Subiaco. Shoppers who are pressed for time can get their fi x at FashionWA.com – an online boutique that is dedicated to selling the wares of those who reside here in WA. Stocking a comprehensive list of WA labels, including Carly Hunter, Little Gracie, Lonely As A Cloud, Malachi Alister Yiap, Paper Skye, Bernice Sara and On Tour, the Fashion WA website also features designer profi les and local fashion news.
