<START V.O.>

CLOSE on nameplate of ALEX HAWKINS on an Edwardian desk. A  woman who resembles MARIE LaMARCHE is making a deal with ayoung couple for a piece of artwork. Money is exchanginghands.

New to art collecting, the young buyer is quite nervous aboutthe acquisition.

It is evident that this is the couple's first major purchase. The woman appears slightly bored with the technicalities ofthe transaction. After she receives the funds, Marie exitsthe office, moves to a storage room to retrieves a cratedpainting. A teenage boy of Eastern European origin spooksher.

MARIEI got a good price for it.

MICHAEL HOLVEYIt'll take longer this time.

MARIETime is what we have. They won'tfind us.

MULDER (V.O.)Living in a world of light, weoften look at the shadow toilluminate that dark and unknownreflection of ourselves. In a worldof duality, perhaps it is also theshadow that looks to the light asits looking-glass. Its emptyreflection, however, reveals onlydarkness mirrored inescapably andblindly within.

Forever condemned to its painfultorment, the shadow stretchesbeseechingly to glimpse a worldthat it can never touch.

We also live with the possibilitythat someone is watching, a worldaway from our own, but a world thatis yet part of our own, and mostoften, the world of darkness thatlies deep within ourselves. Is it an observer or is it waitingfor just the right moment? In the search for the truth, I haveoften discovered that its lightremains dim and distorted.

SCULLY (V.O.)(continuing) I can offer noscientific or rational explanationof the events we witnessedconcerning the Collectors. Thecase, X-291263, remains open. Isuspect that in the painting's nexthome, those harboured within willonce again begin the manipulationof the painting's owners and resumethe process of collection.

I can also only suspect that ourpaths will cross again. Furtherinvestigation has revealed that norecord of Marie LaMarche exists atthe Sorbonne. Her true identityremains a mystery.

Her valuable assistance on thiscase notwithstanding, she is anaccomplice to the entities andtheir actions. Her motivationremains unknown.

I still do not fully understand theimplications of the informationimparted to me.

As has become all too familiar in my journey, the road that leads tothe truth has curved yet onceagain.

All legitimate facets of the art world have been contacted regardingthis case and have been instructedthat extreme caution is to beemployed should this paintingappear, and, that, if found, it isto be forwarded to the Bureau forcomplete investigation and storageuntil a means for permanentdisposal is discovered. I suspectthat in light of its theft, thepainting will make its way to theunderground, a shadowy aspect of

the art world much like it; and one most clearly identified with the murky domain of unscrupulousindividuals.

INT. MULDER's basement office.

Scully is alone and is seated at Mulder’s desk, working onher sketch.

CAMERA moves to her, looks over her shoulder and reveals itto be a sketch of Mulder's "I Want to Believe" poster. It isalmost finished and she has partly completed the shading of

BELIEVE. She smiles thoughtfully at her work. The telephonethen rings and she answers it, leaving the sketch sittingopenly on the desk, and turning away from it. During theconversation, she toys with Mulder’s desk nameplate. After a moment she smiles, hangs up, and goes back to her sketch.

SCULLY (CONTINUING V.O.)This is the ultimate case of buyerbeware, as the unlucky art lover will most likely realize far toolate that he will pay the highestprice imaginable in the hopes ofadding to his treasured collection. And most regrettably, he will alsocome to understand that he truly isin for the acquisition of his life.

INT. MULDER's apartment.

Mulder is at his desk, reading through an old case file.CAMERA closes in on the name at the top of the first page.HOLVEY.

INT. Barnes, SW 13. ONE YEAR LATER.

CAMERA discovers the painting. Two SHAPES exit.
