THE PROPERTYJustifiably this Elizabethan manor house is ListedGrade II* of architectural or historical importanceand enjoys spectacular views from all principalrooms. Pevsner asserts that the house dates fromc.1600 and indeed this is substantiated by a datemark of 1593 RM on the guttering the RMstanding for Robert Moore, whose coat of arms isinscribed above the door.

The intrinsic fabric of the house has remainedintact through successive generations, and the

majority of the architectural embellishments arestill in place. The house, however, has undergonea complete and meticulous restorationprogramme in recent years, which has resulted ina perfect blend of period detail and all modernliving. There is extensive oak panelling, mullioned windows, flagstone f loors andimpressive fireplaces with exquisite woodcarvings above. Of particular note are thefireplaces in the sitting room and principal guest

bedroom, known as the Kings Bedroom. The

drawing room is a magnificent reception room,

built in the 19th century and provides an excellent

    entertaining area of the house.

The beautiful gardens with the intriguing chess

board topiary, formal lawns and beautifully

stocked herbaceous borders provide a perfect

setting for the house and include various terraces

to capture the sunlight throughout the day.

    Substantial outbuildings expected with a

property of such stature include a beautiful stone

barn, fondly known as The Scouts Hut ,traditional loose boxes, coach house and afurther substantial threshing barn. The cottages

belonging to Wyld Court have all beenmodernised and at present provide an incomefrom holiday letting but could equally be usefulto accommodate guests, family members or live-in help.

HISTORICAL NOTEThe majority of Wyld Court dates fromElizabethan times, although there has been ahouse on the site since mediaeval times, when theproperty belonged to Cerne Abbey, prior to theDissolution of the Monasteries by King HenryVIII in 1553. As was the fashion at that time, the

house was built in the shape of the letter E, outof respect to Queen Elizabeth I.

It is known that following his defeat at the battleof Worcester in 1651, King Charles II fled toDorset (at that time Hawkchurch was in Dorset)planning to travel by boat to France. It is saidthat he spent a night at Wyld Court, and that thewestern wing was pulled down by theRoundheads in an attempt to find him; thus thefront of the house now resembles the letter F.
