DEAR FRIENDS,This month marks the 50th anniversary of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. On February 19, 1968 the show premiered on WXXI-TV and on PBS stations across the country. The series changed the landscape of children’s educational television forever as Fred Rogers brought his warm and heartfelt messages to millions of young viewers. The lessons and stories he shared have proven to be timeless – as meaningful and valuable in today’s world as they were in the past.

To start the anniversary celebration WXXI will present a week of back-to-back episodes of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood beginning February 26th. We’ll air special episodes of Daniel Tiger at 9:30 a.m., followed by the episodes of Mister Rogers that inspired them. We invite you to join our celebration by sharing your memories of Fred Rogers on WXXI’s Facebook and Twitter accounts using the hashtag #WXXIandMisterRogers.

This month we also celebrate Black History Month with special programming that spotlights some of the men and women who shaped the Black experience. This includes John Lewis – Get in the Way, which follows the journey of the civil rights hero, Congressman and human rights champion (February 12) and Tell Them We are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities (February 19). Additional specials on WXXI-TV are noted in the TV grid of this magazine, and a list of all of our programming can be found at WXXI.org/bh.

February is also when I make my annual trip to Washington with WXXI Trustees and my fellow public media colleagues to speak to Congress about how important federal funding is to our mission. While government funding is only 1/100th of 1% of the federal budget, or about $1.35 per capita, it’s an important share of WXXI’s funding. It helps leverage private support that allows WXXI to deliver thoughtful, commercial-free programming that serves the entire Rochester region. Tens of thousands of children watch our educational, Ready to Learn programming every day on WXXI-TV and WXXI-Kids 24/7. Education is still at the heart of everything we do and federal funding is still key to making it possible.

Of course, you may be among the thousands who tune in to our radio services, including local news and talk shows that can only be found on WXXI. Our music stations promote arts and culture and work closely to support other institutions, such as the RPO, the Eastman School of Music and Hochstein. Our news department strives to bring you trusted and balanced reporting, something we need more than ever, and our prime-time TV schedule promises programs that educate, entertain, and enlighten.

From education to public affairs to arts and culture, WXXI makes a positive impact on our community each and every day. Thank you again for your membership support. It helps make all of it possible!

Best regards,

Norm [email protected] | @normWXXI

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER

To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email [email protected]

Established in 1986, Cobblestone Capital Advisors is an independently owned investment and wealth management practice serving a range of clients, including pension plans, individuals, and families. Clients benefit from a combined team of expertise comprised of three to four Cobblestone professionals: a relationship manager, a portfolio manager, a support professional and, as needed, a financial planner. Cobblestone is excited about the change of their office location, now located at 500 Linden Oaks, Suite 210, Rochester, NY 14625. WXXI chats with John DiPasquale, Managing Partner, to learn more about the industry.

Q. What’s the best financial advice you’ve ever been given? Start planning as early as possible. It gives you more time and flexibility to reach your goals.

Q. What kinds of issues do your clients struggle with when it comes to wealth management? Some of the common issues include investment advice, financial goal setting, succession

planning, as well as charitable giving strategies.

Q. What’s changed most about the investment industry since you started? The advisor-client relationship is no longer one annual meeting and an occasional check-in. Markets are going up and down. Clients want to be educated and have someone they can trust to guide them through difficult times, always keeping their long-terms goals in mind.

Q. Thoughts on Bitcoin? Although Bitcoin is the largest and most well-known cryptocurrency being traded today, we view it as speculative and not a bet we’re willing to make for our clients. Perhaps someday Bitcoin will be widely accepted as a medium for exchange and stable enough in price to have value as a form of currency. For now, we continue to educate our clients about Bitcoin as we watch this interesting story unfold from the sidelines.

Q. When is it time for people to secure a wealth manager? It varies and depends on your unique financial situation. An effective wealth manager will not only be able to allocate assets, but can also help plan for tax optimization, savings goals, retirement, and passing assets to the next generation. www.cobblestonecap.comRegistration with the SEC should not be construed as an endorsement or an indicator of investment skill, acumen or experience. Investments in securities are not insured, protected or guaranteed and may result in loss of income and/or principal. JOHN DIPASQUALE,

As part of the Indie Lens Pop-Up Series WXXI is pleased to present a FREE screening of Dolores, followed by a panel discussion. With intimate and unprecedented access, Peter Bratt’s film tells the story of Dolores Huerta, among the most important, yet least-known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century—and she continues the fight to this day, at 87.
