Founded in 1926 by Jacob Schneider as Wullimann, Schneider, Nivada, the Nivada Watch Company of Gretchen, Switzerland was a prominent force within the watch industry for most of the 20th century. They produced a number of models over the years, including the Aquamatic, Antarctic, Depthomatic and (in 1940) a new watch line called CROTON.
In my experience as a collector, Nivada Grenchen watches are of very high quality but still a sleeper brand when it comes to the general collecting public, much like Mido, Doxa or Eterna. As such, you can find some very high quality, unique models for less than your comparable Longines, Bulova or Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s Nivada model, a fancy lug, stainless steel case ALERT ALARMmodel that dates to the mid 1950s and is in excellent, original condition. Before I say anything else I want to emphasize that this is a watch that stopped me dead in my tracks when I first saw it; the original dial is a knockout (my photos do not do it justice).
Triple-signed, it measures 42mm lug tip to lug tip and 33mm in width (35.5mm with original crowns). This works out to be just over 1-5/8 inches in length by just over 1-1/4 inches wide, not including the winding and alarm crowns. My trusted watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel, twin mainspring barrel, manual wind Croton – Nivada Grenchen mechanism and it runs smoothly, keeping accurate time.
The 100% original ivory white, enamel finished dial is in flawless condition, guaranteed untouched since it left the factory over 55 years ago. It features raised arrow tip hour markers and numbers, a red numbered inner alarm dial, original silver steel hands with luminous fill, a blue steel sweep seconds hand and original RED alarm hand with arrow tip. Signed NIVADA GRENCHEN below the Croton name and further signed WATERPROOF

ALERT above the 6. It is also signed SWISS at the base of the dial.
The original armored acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The case is a two-piece, solid stainless steel example with separate stainless screw-down back. It is in excellent PLUS shape with fancy, curvilinear lugs, as shown.
The matching and original steel winding and alarms crowns are in excellent shape and correctly unmarked. The top crown is used to set and wind the alarm (setting the hand BACKWARDS only, as is correct) and wind the alarm while the bottom crown is for winding and setting the timekeeping mechanism. And yes, the alarm function buzzes loudly and should wake even the deepest sleeper!
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid features a separate, screw-down stainless steel ring. The back is signed Croton Alert, Nivada Grenchen, Incabloc, Waterproof, Stainless Steel, 52 15126. While stamped waterproof I would not get any vintage watch intentionally wet, save that for a new 200 meters rated divers watch. Inside is a clean, high quality A. Schild caliber 1475 mechanism, one of the most successful Swiss alarm movements made from 1954 to 1970. It is signed Croton, Nivada S.A., Grenchen, A3MA, C2314, 17 Seventeen Jewels, Swiss, COW. The inside case lid is stamped NIVADA SA, GRENCHEN, CROTON SWISS with case number below.
This watch has been fully serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time and the alarm functions perfectly. It comes complete with a new 18mm black deBeer Paris glove leather strap with matching steel buckle. All in all an excellent (essentially NOS) Croton 1950s Nivada Grenchen alarm watch that is my PICK for the week. I had two of these originally and this is my very last one.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Founded by Ariste Calame in the City of Le Locle in 1882, the Zodiac Watch Co. of Switzerland has long been a sought-after watch amongst collectors, especially those who appreciate vintage sport and diving watches. The Zodiac name was used very early on but was not registered until 1908.
The firm exhibited at the Basle Watch Show in 1949 with the Datagraphic, a calendar watch with moon phases and the Autographic, a self-winding model with visible power reserve indicator that was the official watch of the Swiss Federal Railways. By the late 1950s the Sea Wolf divers watch and Rotographic rotor automatic models would be introduced.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s vintage watch from the firm, an OLYMPOS model that dates to ca 1966 and is in excellent, original condition. This is just the third time (in over 20 years) that I have had this Mystery dial model before and, unlike other mystery dial models from other Swiss companies (which were placed in more typical round cases), this

Page 5: holben/Descriptions/October 14... · Web viewALERT above the 6. It is also signed SWISS at the base of the dial. The original armored acrylic

watch has a very Space Age asymmetrical case that resembles Batman’s logo, striking and unique.
Original advertisements for this model stated The face of time…in the future. Zodiac’s self-winding Olympos watch is daringly new in design and engineering. The revolutionary dial needs no hour hand…the dial itself revolves to the exact hour! A movable minute hand is incredibly accurate.
Quadruple-signed for Zodiac, its solid stainless steel case measures 42mm lug tip to lug tip and 36mm in width at its widest, (including the Zodiac-signed original set-flush steel crown). This is a good size watch for its era, measuring just over 1-5/8 inches in total length and just over 1-3/8 inches wide. It is powered by its original 17 jewel (Zodiac Caliber 70-72), self-winding rotor automatic mechanism, fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David just last week to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original charcoal grey, enamel finished Mystery dial is guaranteed untouched since leaving the factory and in excellent condition, truly superb. It features incised hour markers, original silver metal hands (including the rotating disc hour hand) and is signed Zodiac Olympos, Swiss Made at the base of the dial.
The 100 original acrylic crystal is in excellent condition with no flaws. The two-piece case is stainless steel and in excellent PLUS condition, nicer than my photos portray. The original Zodiac-signed stainless winding crown is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is a snap down, compressor type design signed Zodiac, Water & Shock Resistant, Automatic, Antimagnetic, Swiss. It is in excellent condition with no wear or engravings. Inside I find a clean rotor automatic mechanism (Zodiac 70-72 Caliber, custom modified from an earlier A. Schild caliber) that is signed Zodiac Ltd., Seventeen 17 Jewels, Swiss, KXF.The inside of the case back is nicely engine turned and stamped ZODIAC LTD., LE LOCLE SWISS - ACIER INOXYDABLE, 702-918.
This timepiece has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted with a new 18mm black deBeer glove leather strap with matching stainless steel buckle. Ladies and gentleman, I think you will be hard pressed to find a nicer original Zodiac Olympos than this. And I also think the winner is going to be very pleased when it arrives in the mail…the photos do not

Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the Long Meadows (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards,

their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the major players of the Swiss watch making profession, including its chief rival Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s top-of-the-line Grand Prize (Model 2773) example that dates to ca 1964 and is in excellent original condition. This watch is quadruple-signed, meaning it is stamped Longines on the dial, winding crown (trademark), case and mechanism. It also features an original, untouched silver satin finish dial in excellent shape!
Its 10kt Yellow Gold filled case measures 41mm lug tip to lug tip and 34mm in width (36mm with Longines-signed winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-5/8 inches long by just over 1-3/8 inches wide, including the crown. It is powered by its original and top-of-the-line 17 jewel, Longines automatic wind (850 caliber) mechanism that has been fully serviced by my skilled watchmaker David prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent shape, a few tiny specks of age and guaranteed untouched since it left the factory half a century ago. It features applied yellow gold hour markers, original gold metal, Baton-style hands and a separate cross hair design seconds dial with ‘sweep’ gold sub-seconds hand. Signed LONGINES Automatic below the 12 with Longines trademark of a “winged” hourglass. It is further signed SWISS at the base of the dial.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The two-piece case features a 10 Karat Yellow Gold Filled body with stainless back lid. It is in excellent to mint condition – absolutely NO wear. The original matching yellow gold finished winding crown is stamped with Longines logo and is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over, I see that the stainless steel back of the case is in excellent condition, free of any wear or engravings. Personally, I like stainless back lids as they are very robust and not prone to wear like a gold filled back that is constantly rubbing against your wrist. It is stamped 10K GOLD FILLED, STAINLESS STEEL BACK.
Inside I find a clean, higher grade rotor automatic mechanism, an 850 caliber which I feel is one of Longines all time best self-winding movements. It is signed Longines Grand Prize Automatic on the rotor and also Longines Watch Co., Swiss [Caliber] 850 - Seventeen 17 Jewels,

It comes fitted on a new 18mm black deBeer lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold finished buckle. All that’s needed now is a fan of fine vintage watches to purchase this excellent and very original Longines and wear it proudly – it really is a stellar timepiece.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. The history of the Girard-Perregaux Watch Company begins in 1791, when the watchmakers Bautte and Mouline founded a factory in Geneva to manufacture watches. In 1856 the watchmaker constant Girard married Marie Perregaux and the unified firm of “Girard – Perregaux” came into being. In 1906 G. Perregaux acquired the earlier firm of Bautte and Mouline, and today the firm is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds. They have always made a name for themselves in the realm of wristwatches through their unique creativity and high quality mechanisms, one of a select few who produce many of its movements entirely in-house. Today, Girard Perregaux watches are among the most expensive timepieces money can buy.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s model from the firm, a “Gyromatic” (self-winding) model from the late 1950s (ca 1956 – 1958) and in excellent condition. I have sold my share of Gyromatic watches over the years but never this pinched case, Tank form model cased and timed in Switzerland. Actually, I had only seen it in advertisements, near identical to the one I used as a background for this auction! In other words, the vast, vast majority of GP Gyromatic watches had ROUND cases – probably 95% or more.
Quadruple-signed for Girard Perregaux (dial, crown, case and mechanism), its sculpted Swiss made case measures 36mm lug tip to lug tip and 30.5mm in width (including the GP-signed winding/setting crown). This works out to be just over 1-3/8 inches long by 1-3/16 inches wide. It is powered by its original and higher grade, 17 jewel rotor automatic Girard-Perregaux Swiss made mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it is running well and keeping accurate time.
The silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition –professionally restored to its correct status. It features a 60 second outer track border, applied gold finished hour markers, original gold metal Lance-style hands and original ‘sweep’ center seconds hand. Signed Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic below the 12 (with applied GP trademark) and Swiss at the base of the dial.
The crystal curves on all four sides and is in excellent condition. The two-piece, GP-signed case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent to MINT shape, nicer than my photos can show. I particularly like the pinched design and concave sides – a model I had never seen until now except for in old

advertisements. The original GP-signed gold finished winding crown is in excellent order, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is 14k Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent PLUS shape, faceted on six sides and truly flawless. It is stamped 14K. Inside I find a high quality rotor automatic mechanism with signed Girard-Perregaux & Co., Seventeen 17 Jewels – 69 AE 573, Swiss – GXM. The inside case lid is engine turned and stampedGIRARD PERREGAUX 1791, SWISS – 14K, 0.585 with case number below.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled & regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on a new 18mm black hand crafted deBeer lizard grain strap with matching yellow gold finished buckle, a nice band for a nice watch. This is truly a harder to find solid gold Gyromatic with a unique case design – I doubt I’ll be coming across another one of these any time soon!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I have always enjoyed collecting watches from Bulova, an American company of great repute. It was founded in the 1870s by the Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B – U – L – O – V – A … 8:00p.m., Bulova Watch Time.”
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s timepiece from the Bulova firm, a Florentine engraved case model that dates to 1967. This fancy lug 10kt Yellow Rolled Gold Plated model is in excellent, all original condition with a unique Oval-shaped case and mint condition silver, round form dial. I hope my photos do it justice.
Quadruple-signed for Bulova, it measures 40.5mm end to end and 32mm in width (34mm with Bulova-signed winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-5/8” long by 1-1/4” wide, not including the original Bulova crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, manual wind Bulova Swiss mechanism that has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, finely brushed enamel finished dial is in excellent (without flaw) condition – guaranteed untouched since it left the factory almost 46 years ago. It features a black 60 second outer track, raised gold numbers and hour markers, original gold tritium finished Arabic numerals and hour markers, original Lance-style gold metal hands with tritium fill (still glow when exposed to light) and a ‘sweep’ original gold

seconds hand. Signed BULOVA below the 12 and WATERPROOF above the 6. Signed T SWISS MADE T at the base of the dial.
The original acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The two-piece case is 10 Karat Rolled Gold Plated and in excellent condition, a unique Oval-shape with finely engraved Florentine bezel. The winding crown is stamped “BULOVA” and in excellent order, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the 10k RGP back lid is excellent shape like the rest of the watch. It is stamped Bulova – 10kt R.G.P. Case - Antimagnetic – Waterproof – Shock Resistant, J612,672, M7. The “M7” is Bulova’s date code for 1967. Inside is a clean Seventeen Jewel, manual wind movement signed Bulova Watch Co., [Grade] 11ALC - 17 Seventeen Jewels – Swiss – BXW, M7.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. I have fitted a new 17mm black deBeer hand crafted smooth leather calf leather strap on the watch with matching gold buckle so you are all set. In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1950s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.
Here is an excellent and original example of a men’s Bumper Automatic Gruen timepiece, dating to the early 1950s and set within a stainless steel, incised bezel case. While much interest and excitement can be found around Gruen’s Quadron, Pan American and Curvex models, not as many collectors are familiar with the company’s entry into the self-winding market in the early 1950s (ca 1952 – 1955), competing head on with Omega (among others) and their bumper models.
Triple-signed for Gruen, this Auto-Wind model measures 39mm end to end and 32mm in width (35mm with original crown). This is a 460 caliber Gruen model and it has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring its self-winding mechanism runs

very well and keeps accurate.
The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, untouched since it left the factory 60 years ago and with just a touch of age. It features a 60 minute outer track, arrow shaped and Arabic numerals, original blue steel hands and a separate seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and ‘sweep’ blue steel seconds hand. Signed GRUEN PRECISION below the 12 and AUTOWIND above the seconds dial. It is further signed SWITZERLAND below the 6.
The domed acrylic crystal is a new old stock addition and in excellent condition. The case is solid stainless steel and in excellent shape as well, complete with faceted lugs and incised bezel. It has not been polished. The original domed steel winding crown is in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is stainless steel, screw down in design that reads GRUEN 41775 B and is in excellent order.
Inside is clean and higher-grade 17 Jewel, bumper automatic movement signed Gruen Watch Co., Precision – Switzerland, Seventeen 17 Jewels – [Caliber] 460 – Autowind, Veri-Thin - Patented - GXC. The inside of the case lid is signed GUILDITE – BREVET + GRUEN WATCH CO., SWITZERLAND. The word Brevet is French for Patent, indicating Gruen patented this case.
This cleaned, oiled & regulated timepiece winds and sets smoothly (good rotor action) and keeps accurate time. It comes on a new old stock early 1950s brown Calfskin 16mm band with stainless steel ( as marked) buckle. This strap is in excellent shape and nicely complements the watch (of the same age). These “true” Gruen automatics (before the company was sold) do not come up for sale very often. I think this is an excellent of the genre – what about you?

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. This watch is in excellent ORIGINAL condition inside and out, signed for Bulova four times – on

the dial, winding crown, case and mechanism.
Its two-piece case measures 40mm lug tip to lug tip and 31.5mm in width (33.5mm with Bulova winding crown). In inches this works out to be just shy of 1-5/8” long by 1-1/4” wide, not counting the Bulova-signed crown. Its original and high quality self-winding mechanism has been fully serviced by my Bulova-trained watchmaker David and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. This is a 23 jewel, 6 adjustment movement…what you would expect to find powering a railroad grade, or chronometer grade watch…very impressive.
The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, a finely engraved “sunburst” guilloche design. I guarantee it has never been refurbished or restored It features applied white gold faceted hour markers, original silver steel Lance-style hands and original ‘sweep’ center seconds hand. Signed BULOVA 23 JEWELS below the 12. The original Bulova-signed stainless winding crown is in excellent order as well, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the screw down back lid is also stainless steel and in excellent shape, stamped with case number 6218798. It is also lightly stamped (lightly stamped at the factory) “Bulova – Stainless Steel – Shock Resistant – Antimagnetic – Self Winding – Waterproof.” There are a couple scratches from opening and closing but this is typical for this model.
Inside I find a clean and fully serviced mechanism signed BULOVA U.S.A. – 23 JEWELS, 6 ADJUSTMENTS – USA, 10BPAC – HEAT, COLD ISOCHRONISM – 3 POSITIONS, L6 (L6 equals 1956). I’ve added a new 16mm black deBeer handcrafted lizard (grain) calf leather band with matching steel buckle so you’re all set. The watchmaker Jacques Didisheim Goldschmidt had his eye on the future when he founded his watch factory in 1860. He soon moved to the center of Swiss watch making activity - La Chaux-de-Fonds. Jacques' son Bernard would later take over the firm, transforming the Juvenia Watch Co. of Switzerland into a successful watch company both within Europe and overseas.
In 1914 the Juvenia watch brand introduced the smallest movement constructed on a single level, with a diameter of 9.5 mm and thickness of just 2.5 mm. Juvenia went on to produce dress watches, sport watches and unique purse and travel timepieces still highly collected today.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage ladies timepiece from the firm, an original all stainless steel mid-century automatic wind (self-winding) blue dial model that dates to the late 1960s. Folks, this is a like new, OLD STOCK watch and I am telling the truth when I say that I must have stared at its untouched, handsome original BLUE dial for about 5 minutes when I first saw it. Perhaps never worn and with original stainless mesh link Juvenia bracelet strap that will fit a wrist up to 7-1/2 inches thanks to its sliding clasp.
Quintuple-signed, this elegant quickset DATE timepiece measures 29mm lug tip to lug tip and 23mm in width (24.5mm with original “J” signed crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-1/8” long by almost 1” inch wide, including the winding crown. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original seventeen jewel, rotor automatic wind Juvenia mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The blue, enamel finished dial is 100% original and in pristine shape – guaranteed untouched since it left the factory over 40 years ago. It features applied silver hour markers, original silver steel Baton style hands and quickset date window at the 3 position. Signed JUVENIA below the 12 marker, AUTOMATIC above the 6 marker and SWISS MADE at the base.
The original hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent, like new condition. The two-piece solid stainless steel case is Juvenia-signed and in PRISTINE shape with no flaws. The 100% original stainless crown is marked “J” for Juvenia and in excellent order, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is excellent like the rest of the watch, retaining its

original brushed, satin finish. It is engraved AUTOMATIC at one end and with serial number 1,223,512 at the other side. Inside I find a clean and higher-grade mechanism, signed JUVENIA MFG, AUTOMATIC, SWISS 10911, SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS, [CALIBER] 2671. The inside case back is engine turned and stamped JUVENIA, FAB. SUISSE, JUVENIA MFG., SWISS STAINLESS STEEL, MODELE DEPOSE. The phrase “Modele Depose” is French for Registered Design.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on its original and mint condition stainless steel bracelet strap with sliding, adjustable clasp so it will fit any size wrist from small up to 7-1/2 inches. The clasp is stamped JUVENIA as shown. I have never had a Juvenia watch like this before and I doubt I’ll have another one like it, essentially New Old Stock condition. It is one of those timepieces where I know its new owner is going to very pleased – my sleeper of the week!

I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s Girard Perregaux “SEA HAWK” model – an excellent and original solid stainless steel HERMETIC case model timepiece that dates to ca 1945 – 1946, the end of WWII. Did you see the dial on this one? Truly my favorite Sea Hawk dial.
The Sea Hawk was one of G-P’s most successful models, first introduced in the early 1940s and a popular non-ordnance military watch during WWII.
Triple-signed, it measures 38mm lug tip to lug tip and 32mm in width (34.2mm with original stainless crown). This works out to be 1-1/2 inches long by 1-1/4 inches wide, not counting the winding crown. It has been fully serviced prior to auction and its original and high quality manual wind Girard Perregaux mechanism and it runs smoothly and keeps accurate time.
The 100% original, silver enamel finished dial is in excellent shape, guaranteed untouched since it left the factory in Switzerland and just a couple tiny specks of age. This is my favorite Sea Hawk dial given its RED number

Page 28: holben/Descriptions/October 14... · Web viewALERT above the 6. It is also signed SWISS at the base of the dial. The original armored acrylic

24 hour outer track dial and guilloche (engraved) sub-seconds.
It features a 60 minute outer track border, Arabic numerals, original blue steel hands with aged green fill (no longer glows) and a recessed, engine-turned sub-seconds dial with original sweep blue steel seconds hand. Signed GIRARD-PERREGAUX below the 12 and Sea Hawk above the 6. It is further signed SWISS at the base of the dial.
The original hardened acrylic hermetic designed crystal is in excellent condition with no flaws. The two-piece Girard Perregaux signed case is solid stainless steel and is in excellent PLUS shape – absolutely without any faults. The steel winding crown, unmarked but absolutely original is in excellent shape and operates smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back of the case is in excellent condition, zero wear or engravings. Inside is a clean mechanism signed Girard Perregaux & Co., Swiss – Fifteen 15 Jewels GXM. The inside of the back lid is signed GIRARD PERREGAUX, SWISS, STAINLESS STEEL, BREVET + .
This timepiece has been fully serviced (disassembled, cleaned, oiled & regulated) to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes complete with a vintage style but new 16mm dark brown deBeer crocodile grain leather strap with steel buckle for a fine combination. All in all a pristine, original SeaHawk timepiece from one of Switzerland’s best watch firms – I really like this one.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. My longtime favorite U.S. watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American enterprise established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Elgin, Illinois (the factory had a National Street address). It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago, and the Elgin factory would become the focal point of the town.
Elgin would offer its first watch for sale in 1867, marking the beginning of fierce competition with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame. Bartlett and Currier would later join the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the firm, a seldom seen Lady Elgin “Durabalance” model that dates to ca 1964 and is complete with its original display box and appearing to be old stock and unused. This flagship model (as “Lady Elgin” denotes) is 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and was made entirely in the USA, including its original Kreisler band.
It features a mechanism that was one of Elgin’s last (if not VERY LAST) crowning achievements, the 23 jewel Grade 905, adjusted to Six (6) positions – what could be considered chronometer

Page 31: holben/Descriptions/October 14... · Web viewALERT above the 6. It is also signed SWISS at the base of the dial. The original armored acrylic

grade. What makes this mechanism unique is a “free sprung” (dura) balance that dispensed with the conventional regulator pins found in most mechanical movements. The only other movement, Swiss or American, that comes close is Patek Philippe’s Gyromax balance of the same period.
Triple-signed, it measures 27mm lug tip to lug tip and 16mm in width (17.4mm with original winding crown). This works out to be 1-1/8 inches in length by 5/8 inches in width, not including the winder. My skilled watchmaker David has fully serviced its 23 jewel, 6 adj. mechanism, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent original condition, never touched up or restored. It features raised gold markers, original gold hands and is signed Lady Elgin 23 below the 12 marker.
The original acrylic crystal is nicely FACETED for added sparkle and in mint shape. The two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent to mint condition, like new. The original gold finished winding crown is correctly not marked, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that it is in pristine, brushed finish shape, stamped ELGIN 14K GOLD. Inside I find a clean and high-grade movement, signed ELGIN 23 JEWELS, 6 ADJ – USA, 905. The inside of the case lid is signed ROSS [Model] 1328 with case number below.
This watch has been fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on its original Kreisler 10kt Yellow Gold filled link bracelet in excellent, as new condition with safety chain. It will fit a wrist up to 6-3/4 inches in size but if you need a larger length let me know as I should be able to find a black cord bracelet strap that is longer.
It ships with its original Lady Elgin red velvet lined display case, as shown, in very nice condition. All in all a 1960s “Retro Modern” all American solid 14k gold wristwatch that features one of the last and finest American made mechanisms and is pretty much in New Old Stock condition.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Among watch collectors, the Omega Watch Co. of Switzerland, a firm founded by Louis Brandt of Biel in 1848, is one of the most renowned brands of timepieces. In 1894 a new caliber bore the name of Omega for the first time, and since then it has produced some of the finest caliber wristwatches money can buy. Omega is my favorite Swiss watch firm as well, combining those qualities of name brand recognition, high quality and relative value that are important to the seasoned watch collector.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece form the Omega firm, a men’s Seamaster Geneve model that dates to ca 1968. The Geneve SeaMaster line from Omega was

limited and are not often seen today, rare given the lack of Seamaster logo on dial but prominent on the case.
This reference 166.037 watch is in excellent, ALL ORIGINAL condition, retaining its original Omega-signed stainless steel bracelet, original Omega-signed crystal and original Omega-signed crown.
Six-times signed for Omega (dial, crystal, crown, case, mechanism and band), it measures 41mm end to end and 34.5mm in width (36.5mm with Omega-signed crown). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by 1-5/8 inches wide, not including the original crown.
It is powered by its original 17 jewel Omega caliber 563 automatic (self-winding) mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it runs very well and keeps accurate time.
The 100% original silver, finely brushed enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, guaranteed untouched since it left the Omega factory and honestly NICER than my photos turned out. It is really a stellar dial. Features include a 60 second outer track, applied silver hour markers, original silver metal hands with tritium fill, a QUICK CHANGE date window at the 3 position and original sweep center seconds hand. Signed OMEGA AUTOMATIC below the 12 marker and Seamaster Geneve above the 6 marker. It is further signed T SWISS MADE T below the 6 marker, the T standing for tritium.
The original hardened acrylic armored crystal is in excellent condition (a few light scratches, very hard to see), complete with a tiny OMEGA symbol in the center you can see with a magnifying loupe. The two-piece case is solid stainless steel and in excellent shape.
The original Omega-signed steel winding crown is in excellent order, winding and setting as it should, including the quickset date function that allows the user to advance an entire day by pulling the crown OUT to the second position, the first position used to change the time.
Turning the watch over I see that the back of the case has polished sides and a satin/brush finish across the center. It is in excellent overall shape (one opening scratch) and engraved with the Seamaster emblem and stamped SEAMASTER WATERPROOF.
The mechanism is signed Omega Watch Co., [Caliber] 563, Seventeen 17 Jewels with serial number #27,162,353. This serial number dates the watch to ca 1968. The inside case lid is stamped ACIER INOXYDABLE, OMEGA WATCH CO., FAB. SUISSE, SWISS MADE, 166.037 SP

with SGR within a shield below.
This original Seamaster Geneve has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It comes fitted on its original 18mm stainless steel Omega-stamped bracelet with fold-away clasp that will fit a wrist up to 7-1/2 inches in size with no problem. It is stamped with the OMEGA symbol on the outside and 110.12, Stainless Steel, Omega onj the inside clasp.
