Living onboard a Tudor ship would have been hard. Ships were small and would have been packed full of provisions for their long voyages.

Punishments were harsh. Sailors who didn’t obey the ship’s rules would be flogged. Men were often flogged for falling asleep on watch.Anyone caught stealing would be dunked in the sea until they almost drowned.

To add to their problems, there were always rats onboard ships and rats spread infectious diseases such as the plague.

If the ships were close to land, they could be driven onto rocks and the ships broken up.
Every sailor dreaded storms and hidden rocks which meant only one thing – shipwreck!
