What is Minimal Access Surgery (MAS)?

MAS, also called keyhole surgery is a rapidlyemerging surgical technique, which ispatient friendly. MAS involves making smallincisions of about 0.5 -1cms, in contrast with

the long incisions of conventional approach.MAS also involves looking inside a bodycavity by a telescope, through natural orifices, without making any cuts, as in Hysteroscopy(looking inside the uterus), Cystoscopy (looking inside the urinary bladder), for diagnosis andtreatment. Main principles of time tested conventional surgery remain the same in MAS.The difference is in the approach, which is through much smaller incisions, a 15-20 timesmagnified view and easy accessibility to otherwise difficult to reach parts of the body.

What is the procedure in MAS?Laparoscopy means visualization of abdominal cavity through a telescope. In Laparoscopy, asmall incision of 1cm is made, through which a long, thin telescope is inserted. A small videocamera, connected to the telescope, transmits images of the inside view of human body to ascreen. Depending on the type of surgery, two or three additional, 0.5cms incisions are made,through which fine, long instruments are introduced & the required surgical procedure is

completed. Most of these procedures require general anaesthesia.

What are the benefits of MAS?1. Minimal Access surgery produces less operative trauma to the patient than an equivalent

procedure, done by the traditional methods.2. Surgery is done more accurately as about 1 5-20times enlarged view of internal organs/

blood vessels and tissues is obtained.3. As MAS involves use of special long instruments, the organs/parts which are other wise

difficult to reach in open surgery, can be easily operated upon, using small cuts and withgreater precision.

4. Less post-operative pain5. The total dose of post-operative medication is reduced.6. Early mobility & speedy recovery, results in early resumption of work.7. Hospitalization time is shorter.8. Reduced incidence of post-surgical complications, such as wound infection9. Less chance of adhesion formation, a common sequel of open surgery.10. Reduced or almost negligible possibility of hernia in operative scars.11. Incisions being very small, there are fine scars, which are hardly visible after few months

A 107-year-old Vidyavati Chopra, of Delhi's Bengali Market, may have become the

world's oldest patient to have a partial hip replacement at Primus Super Speciality

Hospital. The surgery was nearly an hour long affair for the team comprising Dr Saurav

A new technique of BINAURAL COCHLEAR IMPLANTATION has been
