fall study groupsAugust 1 - December 19, 2021

Jesus followers should seek to know and understand God by diligently studying His Word. While this discipline of Bible study should be exercised in the individual lives of each maturing disciple, we also recognize that spiritual growth happens best in dynamic community with others — as we learn truth together.

Study Groups facilitate an opportunity to “Learn Truth” through teaching and Bible study. They are centered on the Bible as the one source of revealed truth.

Study Groups are organized by semesters. They meet for approximately one hour each week of the semester. Though maximum benefit is received by starting the course at the beginning of the semester, the courses are designed to encourage entry at any point.

Jesus is the Promised King! He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. The gospel of Matthew shows through extensive quotation of Scripture how Jesus fulfilled all the promises, prophecies, and types in the Old Testament. In our 2021 Mat-thew reading plan and preaching series, we’ll be exploring Matthew to understand who Jesus is in light of the Old Tes-tament. While our worship gatherings will feature messages from the book of Matthew, this Study Group will focus on the reading plan’s Friday and Sunday cross referenced passages.

Philippians & ColossiansTeacher: Roger BarkerTime: Sundays, 9:15amIntensity: Low

Philippians & ColossiansFriends who will pray for us are treasured. Their prayers en-courage, direct, and challenge us in our spiritual lives. Their prayers create an unbreakable bond with prayer being one way of communicating love for another person. Paul had forged a special relationship with the believers in Philippi and that relationship grew through genuine prayer that fo-cused on continued spiritual growth.

Paul’s Letter to the Philippians is commonly considered his most personal epistle, written to a church for which he had fond memories and a warm attachment.

Paul wrote to the Colossian church to remind them that the life of the Kingdom is found ultimately in Christ, and Christ alone. In Christ we find new life. Through Christ’s death we die to our old lives, and through his life we are given new life. Our new lives are characterized by transformed rela-tionships with God and with others. And as a result, the life of the Kingdom is a cross-centered life.

Roger Barker was saved at 19 years old. He has taught the Bible since the early 1980’s. He has taught all ages from 3rd graders to senior adults. His greatest joy is to see the “spiritual light come on” as they are able to see what God says through His Word. Roger enjoys teaching through various books of the Old and New Testaments because he realizes the need to study the Old Testament to better understand the New.

EphesiansTeacher: Stephen MedlinTime: Sundays, 9:15amIntensity: Low

EphesiansIn Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, we discover some of the richest blessings that are ours as saints—we discover what it means to be “in Christ.” Even though the apostle Paul was in prison when he wrote the Letter of Ephesians, he knew and we know that the Word of God cannot be bound. The decrees of ancient rulers of Paul’s day and time are forgotten today. The laws of the mighty Roman Empire are disregard-ed today. But a letter written from a prison cell almost two thousand years ago is being read and studied by millions of people around the world in the twenty-first century.

Stephen Medlin has been an adult and youth Bible study teacher for over 30 years. Stephen has been a follower of Jesus for over 40 years, and his dad was a Southern Baptist pastor. He and his wife, Kelly, have been married for 33 years and have three grown children. They moved to the Tri-Cities area in Septem-ber 2018. They enjoy board games, being awed by God’s mountains, and feeling blessed to get to serve God.

Joshua & JudgesTeacher: Gene MermilliodTime: Sundays, 11:00 amIntensity: Low

Joshua & JudgesGod is moving. It is undeniable when we look into Joshua and Judges. Any thoughts that He is a disconnected deity floating aimlessly somewhere in the heavens is not what the Bible teaches. Instead, these books tell us that God is active and involved in the lives of His people. In Joshua God is leading His people into the promised land. Along the way, they face various trials and temptations. Through it all the Lord is teaching them to be faithful. He is showing them how His ways are the right ways. In Judges God’s chosen people have moved from new residents in the promised land to rebellious people in the promised land. But God is not done with them. As He sends judge after judge, the people go through cycles of rebellion and repentance. God sends as leaders unexpected characters who are faithful like Deborah, timid like Gideon, and brash like Samson.

As you study these books, you will see that God has a plan and He fulfills His promises. You’ll learn that God uses the most unexpected of people to do extraordinary feats of power and grace. We will be encouraged that God is still moving on our behalf.

Gene Mermilliod has served as a pastor on staff at TCBC since April of 1990. He has taught various courses and age groups during that time. He has been married to his wife Gayle for 34 years. They have six children and four grandchildren.

GalatiansTeacher: Gayle MermilliodTime: Wednesdays, 6:30 pmIntensity: Standard

galatiansSomeone has well said that Jesus Christ did not die on the cross so Christianity could become only a hobby that we practice one day a week. Real Christianity is for all of life and affects every part of life. The Christian life is a life of faith that leads to freedom. Once and for all we now know that rules and rituals have been replaced by grace and faith. The Book of Galatians makes it plain that the way to the Lord is not by keeping God’s law, but by trusting a loving God. In a real sense, the Book of Galatians is the Emancipation Proclamation for every child of God.

Gayle Mermilliod is the wife of our Stewardship Pastor, Gene Mermilliod. They have served at TCBC since it was started in April of 1990. Gayle has taught various Bible studies for over 20 years and assisted in couples and singles classes. She has also spoken at women’s conferences, retreats, and workshops. She and Gene have 6 children and 4 grandchildren.

Equip The FamilyTeacher: Eric BeachTime: Sundays, 11:00amIntensity: Standard

Equip The FamilyThis course specifically designed to equip those that influence children and students will focus on teaching foundational truths by mirroring the TCBC Family Discipleship Plan. Each week, adult participants will be learning the same Big Truth, Big Ideas, and Bible stories as their students are learning in their NextGen groups and at home the upcoming week. In addition, each week the participants will dedicate a portion of the class discussing how they can have spiritual conversations in their homes about those truths and also debrief on the prior week’s victories and challenges. The Family Ministries Team desires for every parent or caregiver of every middle or high school student to complete this Study Group as we partner together to help the next generation find their joy in Jesus!

Women In The Word: Go DeeperTeacher: Jennifer LaughrunTime: Sundays, 11:00amIntensity: Standard

Women In The Word: Go DeeperWhy do you read the Bible? How do you really study the Word of God? This Study Group is designed to answer those questions by taking women on a journey to knowing and loving God more through knowing and loving His Word more deeply. Ladies will study and practice intensive reading, interpretation, and application of Scripture to their lives. This Study Group is for any women who desires to love God more intimately and to “no longer be immature like children…tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human craftiness in deceitful schemes.” (Eph. 4:14)

Rejecting Lies & Developing DiscernmentTeacher: Bill WhaleyTime: Sundays, 9:15amIntensity: Standard

Developing DiscernmentThis Study Group will feature the study of two important books, “The Gospel According to Satan” by Jared Wilson and “The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment” by Tim Challies.

Not every lie sounds untrue. Some just sound right. And some are repeated so often that they virtually become “common knowledge.” This is what makes lies about God so dangerous. So we have to ask, what might God’s enemy want us to believe to lead us astray? And would we even see it happening? “The Gospel According To Satan” will bring us this compelling and enlightening exploration of the popular and oftentimes pleasing ways spiritual darkness masquerades as light. We will examine eight lines popular with too many Christians--eight lies the enemy wants us to believe--and provides eight lines of counterattack to help us regain our footing. Wilson names the lies and then reveals why they appeal to us, shows how they harm us, and provides ways to counteract them. We can renounce Satan’s counterfeit gospel, but first we must see it for what it is.“The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment looks to the Bible to seek what God teaches on the subject of spiritual discernment, a term Tim Challies defines as the skill of understanding and applying God’s Word with the purpose of separating truth from error and right from wrong. This book teaches us to think biblically so we might act biblically. It appeals for discernment, teaching the importance of this discipline in guarding the good news God has entrusted to us.
