ターム2が始まって、AUAPもとうとう半分を切りました。

アメリカンスタディーズではアフリカ系アメリカ人、アジア系アメリカ人、障害を持つアメリカ人がアメリカで生活をする上で抱える問題について学びました。ファンクションの授業ではまたWWUの授業とクラス交流がありました。更に先生たちとレストランに行き、学んだ英語を実際利用することができました！TOEICの授業では初の練習用TOEICに挑みました。プレテストとスコアを比べながら、更にどのようにスコアを伸ばせるかを授業で考えながら、二つ目の練習用TOEICに向けて準備を進めています。IESのリサーチプロジェクトも順調に進んでいて、パソコンスキルのスキルアップにも繋がっているようです。キャリアクラスでは東京五輪でボランティアを考慮している学生たちのために、ゲストを授業に呼び、ボランティア経験やオリンピックにまつわる話などをしていただきました。自由参加のボランティア登録のワークショップではなんと30人以上の学生が東京五輪のボランティアに登録しました！

Term two has begun. Just over halfway through AUAP!

In American Studies, students used the internet, read blogs and watched video clips to learn about the accomplishments of African Americans, Asian Americans and Americans with disAbilities as well as some of the challenges they still face. Students also learned that many famous people have disAbilities!

In Functions, students attended another class exchange and spoke more fluently and energetically than ever before! They also went to restaurants with teachers and volunteers and interacted all in English. A challenging and fun way to end the Functions class.

In TOEIC, students took their first practice TOEIC then analyzed how they improved since their pre-TOEIC in Japan. Now they are preparing for their second practice TOEIC.

In IES, students are printing their research project posters and preparing to present their findings. Working in the computer lab, one student was hear saying, “I have learned so many computer skills in this class!”

In Career Exploration, students explored ways to connect volunteering and careers by attending a Tokyo Olympics’ volunteering workshop, where guest speakers told inspiring volunteering stories. Over 30 students applied to be Olympics’ volunteers!

• November Students of the Month

11月はカルチャーナイトから始まりました！AUAPの学生が自分の文化をベリンハムのコミュニティに伝えることのできるイベントで、お好み焼き、団子、お寿司など、学生たちは様々な日本食を用意していました。自分の文化を分けるだけでなく、ウェスタンにいる他の国際学生からフランス、韓国、ドイツ、サウジアラビア、パキスタンなど、様々な文化を学ぶ機会になりました。

更に今月はVeterans Dayの三連休を利用して、バンクーバー・カナダに行くプログラムイベントが開催されました。カナダでは水族館、スタンレーパーク、ガスタウンの蒸気時計などの観光地を巡る学生や、ロブソン通りで買い物を楽しむ学生もいました。

11月中旬には全国でInternational Education Weekでした。ウェスタンではGlobal Pathway Programとのコラボレーションで学生たちが利用できるグローバルラウンジという新しいスペースのオープンイベントがありました。AUAPにとってもいいイベントスペースになるので、早速学生の誕生日パーティーがラウンジで行われていました。

AUAP started November with a bang with Cultural Night, as students prepared food, demonstrations, and decorations to share Japanese culture with the WWU community. Food included okonomiyaki, sushi, dango, and more! Not only did students get to share their culture, they also learned about other cultures represented at WWU by students from France, Korea, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, etc.

Students got to visit Vancouver B.C. on the AUAP Vancouver Excursion on Veteran’s Day (or Remembrance Day in Canada). They visited many local attractions such as the aquarium, Stanley Park, the steam clock, and many students enjoyed shopping at the famous Robson Street.

November also hosts International Education Week! In collaboration with the Global Pathway Program, the Language and Culture Programs at WWU opened the Global Lounge, a lounge space for students to study and socialize in. It is a great space for AUAP events as well, and students have already been utilizing it for birthday parties.
