Nationalism

• Germans began resenting all other nations

• Tired of paying them reparations

• New political parties are established

Problems in 1923

• Rentenmark created at a value of 1 to 1 trillion.

• Beer Hall Putsch (Munich Putsch)– Put on by Adolf Hitler– Hitler was arrested and sentenced to 5

years in prison

• 1920s German Workers Party is growing (Nazi Party)

Adolf Hitler

• Sentenced to 5 years.

• Served only about 2 years total– 8 months in a cell (very comfortable)

• Wrote Mein Kampf while in prison– The things he planned on doing in order to

rebuild Germany.

Nazis

• Created a massive nationalist movement

• Clothing and symbols were important

• Not everyone could be involved.

• Found people to blame for Germany’s problems.

Nazi Youth (Hitler Youth)

• 1922-1945• Stopped after the Beer Hall Putsch

– Went underground

• Future “Aryan Supermen”• Taught anti-Semitism• Emphasis on physical, mental, and academic

study• Took place of the boy scout movement

Youth Continued

• Taught military tactics and use of weapons

• Similar uniforms as the SA and used Nazi insignia

• By 1936, if you were between the ages of 14-18 you had to join

Boy Scouts

• Worldwide organization• To help promote youth with physical,

mental, and spiritual development• Began in 1907• Girls have their own sections as well• A program of education that encourages

outdoor activities– Hiking, biking, sports, and camping

• Voluntary

• Nonpolitical

• Educational

• Used uniforms and insignia

• Teaches good citizenship

• Ages 7 and up– Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Rover Scouts

• Created December 1941

• Volunteer

• Disaster relief, search and rescue, and aerospace education

• Cadets 12-21

• Seniors 18-up

• Uniforms while performing duties
