Willamette Weimaraner Club

July 2-3 2011 Walking Field Trial

The Willamette Weimaraner Club held its first field trial ofthe year over the 4th of July weekend. As in years past, ourfirst trial was to be held in April at the usual central Oregongrounds near Madras, but this year, the AKC decided to holdit Pointing Dog Championship in the Northwest about 2weeks after our planned dates. This impacted not just ourclub, but also several others. After much discussionamongst these groups, it was decided to not hold trials atthat time, but instead, to have additional walking trials on thewest side of the state, at the Sauvie Island Wildlife Manage-ment Area, near Portland, during the summer season whenthese grounds were open for use.

While these plans were well underway, Mother Nature threwus a curve ball. During the previous winter the CascadeMountains experienced extraordinary snow fall amounts, inexcess of 60 feet. This was a joy to skiers andsnowboarders, who were still shushing down the mountainswell into May. But as the warm weather came all that snowhad to go somewhere and that was into the Columbia River,as well as many others. The Columbia drains not only theCascades but the mountains of Idaho and British Columbia. And Sauvie Island sits right where the Columbia andWillamette Rivers come together. For half of May and all ofJune, our local field trial grounds were under water, com-pletely inaccessible, except by boat. The cattle normallygrazed out there had to be moved to higher ground andpeople were spotted in kayaks, fishing for carp where thedogs usually searched for chukar!

Right up until the week before our trial dates we were notsure if we would be able to get out there. The water wasreceding slowly, but what shape would the grounds be in,after being submerged for over 6 weeks? But the sun cameout, the water drained away, and amazingly, the groundswere in remarkably good condition– green growing grass, cattle grazing. We thankfully were able to “go home again”.

For this trial we offered 8 stakes with the OGD, AGD,AWD, AWP opened to Weims only. The ALGD, OLGD, OP,and OD were open to all pointing breeds. There were a totalof 67 entries.

What had to be the highlight of the entire event was thatQuinn, belonging the club VP Carmen Spencer won the all-breed OLGD stake. Already an AFC, as well as a MH, thiswin completed his requirements to earn his FCH title. It wasvery exciting for all of us to share in this occasion.

As with all club events, many thanks go out to those whohelped put this trial together and have it run smoothly. Clubmembers cooked and served scrumptious lunches andsnacks. Everyone pitched into set up camp and break itdown at the end of the day. Members and folks from otherbreed clubs help out in planting birds, line marshaling, andgenerally keeping things rolling so we could all get out of

there before dark.

The WWC held it second field trial of the year on the

Sauvie Island Wildlife Management Area, just north of the

city of Portland, Oregon. The grounds made a remark-

able recovery in the 2 months following extreme flooding

in June of this year. The pasture grass grew back as if

nothing had ever happened. All of the local pointing dog

folks were very happy to be back on our traditional

training/event grounds.

There were eight stakes offered at this trial. The OGD,

AWP, AWD were opened to Weimaraners only, and the

AGD was open to Wemaraners, Viszlas, Wirehaired

Pointing Griffons, and Spinones only. The ALGD, OD,

OLGD, and OP were open to all pointing breeds in

AKC.

There were 56 entries at this trial, which was run on two

different courses – the juvenile stakes were run on a

smaller back field, separated from the main course by a

deep canal, so as not to interfere with the broke dog

stakes. It was our first time trying this out and found that

is worked very well and allowed us to be able to run this

many stakes and still be finished by late afternoon.

In attendance were several folks from British Columbia

and a couple all the way from Saskatchewan.

Our FT secretary and chairperson, though not new to the

field trial sport, were novices at handling those complex

chores. Not only did they keep all the trial details well

organized, passing muster with the AKC field rep who

came, but they also provided two scrumptious lunches

and snacks for all the attendees.

Thanks go out to our club members and other friends

who pitched in to help keep the event going, planting

birds, marshaling, gunning, and generally handling all those

little details that go into having a successful trial. The

weather even cooperated, not getting as hot as it often is

at this time of the year.

We need your Help!!

Planning quality trophy prizes and presenting a quality event are tough in this economy. I’d like

to start collecting at least pledges for the WWC upcoming event. The club is dependent on the

generous donations from the fancy to continue to offer unique appealing trophies and prizes.

Traditionally the previous year's winners have first choice at the awards they had won the year

before. If you would like to do that please contact me right away. We are having a second Specialty

on the same day. Please call or e-mail me to discuss what you would like to offer and what options

we have open. I would love to hear from you soon.

Please email Gail Gegg at [email protected] with your pledge and which class/prize you wish to

sponsor. All pledges/donations by closing date will be published in the catalog and attached to the

sponsored prize.

You may also call me at 253-862-0877.

The Willamette Weimaraner Club held its fifth and sixth

Specialties on Friday July 22, 2011 at the Portland Expo

Center in Portland Oregon. This is a special year for us as

this club was established in 1951 and we are celebrating

our 60th Anniversary throughout all of our events. 60th

Anniversary lapel pins were given for all placements.

There were some pins available for sale and we thank

those who purchased those and wore them to help us

celebrate.

Obedience and Rally were offered for Weimaraners and

held with the Combined Specialties. These classes were

chaired by our very capable Chair Judi Voris and judged

by Ms. Cathy Dutra.

Barbara Taylor chaired the Specialties assisted by Gail

Gegg. Gail was also the Trophy Chair providing beautiful

plates with game bird motif for Specialty 1, and etched

beer steins for Specialty 2. Gorgeous Rosettes were

given for all awards for both Specialties. Cozy Dog beds

were donated for High in Trial and High Combined.

Judge’s Hospitality was well taken care of by Leslie Like.

Hospitality Chairman, Tina Lacey, provided food and

beverages throughout the day as well as our scrumptious

luncheon. Chip Taylor and Jim House took care of set up

and tear down. Maureen Conley, President, sold cata-

logs, provided general help, and organized the lunch line.

Elda Cook made some beautiful paper roses for the

Trophy table, food table, and judge’s boutonnieres.

Our Ring steward Char Benedict kept everything moving

smoothly and always with her pleasant smile.

Catherine Reed operated a wonderful Weimaraner

Rescue Raffle. The proceeds went to benefit Oregon

Weimaraner Rescue.

Our very capable Judges on Friday were Dr. Robert (Bo)

Gloster MD for Sweepstakes 1, and Mr. Chuck Murray

for Sweepstakes 2. Dr. Robert Smith judged Specialty 1,

and Mr. Hank Williams judged Specialty 2.

Thanks again to all the trophy donors, and a special thank

you to all the exhibitors who joined us for an enjoyable

day with our wonderful breed! Congratulations to all!

Carmen Spencer: Rizzo went to the GSPC ofOregon tand won the Open Derby stake for 2 FC points.Quinn tagged along and earned a 4th place in OGD and2nd in AGD.

Rizzo won Open Derby at the GSPC of Oregon. She ran fantastic and pointed four birds and waited forme to flush them!

Gspco walking trial, Sauvies Island. Carmen 4th withQuinn.

Congratulations to Carmen on her field trial winsand placements at Hastings Island! Quinn took a firstand a fourth in the Gun Dog stakes and Rizzo took firstin the Open Derby.

Quinn finished his Obedience Utility Title with a firstplace in Albany! That also gave him enough points forhis VX3!

Congrats to Carmen Spencer and Quinn for placingthird in Western Classic AGD as a walking handler! Greatjob!!

Anne Tyson took the Weims to the all-breed

Field Trial which was a Horseback trial with her

walking. Diesel basically came ‘off the sofa’ to place

2nd in Open Gun Dog. He was just a month shy of

being 10 years old.

Her young import, Kenzie, had a great field trial debut

with a 4th in the first Open Puppy and then a nice win

in the second Open Puppy to give her 2 points toward

her Field Championship. Huge thanks to Eleonore

Lequime for trusting Anne with this pup. She’s tons of

fun!

Chip Taylor hit a double header at the Tri Cities

Obedience Trials last October 2011 when he finished

two CD's on the same weekend with mother and

daugther team of Fancy and Paris. Fancy finished

her CD Saturday with 3rd Place, and Paris finished

her CD on Sunday with 2nd Place.

That same weekend Tia took 2nd place in Rally

Novice B, and Paris 4th Place in Rally Advanced B.

Paris was also 1st Place in Novice B with a

195.5 at the Southland Weimaraner Club Specialty in

July 2011.

Paris finished her Rally Advanced title at

Whidbey Island Kennel Club and Tia finished her RN

there.

Gail Gegg:

Gail had a busy 9 months. She finished Tzuki's

Championship, then bred her, and Tzuki had a litter of

10 pups. She is shown in this pic winning BOS just 12

weeks after whelping.

Tzuki has GCH points and is on her way to her

GCH.
