Wuthering Heights In the late 1801, Mr. Lockwood rented Thrushcross Grange, an old farm owned by Mr. Heathcliff who lived in the ancient manor of Wuthering Heights. During his visit, snow began to fall. It covered the moor paths and made travel impossible for a stranger in that countryside. The visitor is finally rescued by Zillah, because the dogs have caught him. That night, Mr. Lockwood had a strange dream about Catherine Earnshaw’s ghost. Heathcliff appeared in a state of great excitement and ordered Mr. Lockwood out of the room. Lockwood asked his housekeeper, Nelly Dean, to tell him the story of Heathcliff and the Wuthering Heights. Her story of the Earnshaws, Lintons, and Heathcliffs began years before, when old Mr. Earnshaw was living at Wuthering Heights with his wife and two children, Hindley and Catherine. Once, on a trip to Liverpool, Mr. Earnshaw found a starving and homeless Gypsy boy, and he brought back with him to Wuthering Heights and christened Heathcliff. At first, the children detested the dark-skinned Heathcliff, but Catherine quickly came to love him. After his wife’s death, Mr. Earnshaw preferred Heathcliff to his own son. Mr. Earnshaw sent Hindley away to college, keeping Heathcliff nearby. Three years later, Mr. Earnshaw died, and Hindley inherited Wuthering Heights. He returned with a wife, Frances, and immediately got revenge on Heathcliff. Heathcliff continued his close relationship with Catherine, however. One night they wandered to Thrushcross Grange, hoping to tease Edgar and Isabella Linton. Catherine was bitten by a dog and was forced to stay at the Grange to recuperate for five weeks until she was able to walk again. Afterward, the Lintons visited frequently at Wuthering Heights. When Frances died after giving birth to a baby boy named Hareton, Hindley bacame an alcoholist. Heathcliff ran away from Wuthering Heights and he was staying away for three years, and returned shortly after Catherine and Edgar’s marriage. When Heathcliff returned, he immediately set about seeking revenge on all who have wronged him. When Hindley died, Heathcliff inherited the manor. He also placed himself in line to inherit Thrushcross Grange by marrying Isabella Linton, whom he treated very cruelly. Catherine became ill, gave birth to a daughter, and died. Heathcliff begged

About the time that Edgar Linton became seriously ill, Heathcliff persuaded Cathy to visit her little cousin, who was also in extremely bad health. Although she was able to return to Thrushcross Grange before her fathers death. Weak, sickly Linton Heathcliff died soon after. Mr. Lockwood went back to London in the spring without seeing Wuthering Heights or its people again. Traveling in the region the next autumn, he revisited Wuthering Heights. There, he found Catherine and Hareton in possession. From Ellen, he heard that Heathcliff died three months earlier. He was a broken man, still disturbed by memories of the beautiful young Catherine Earnshaw.Mr. Lockwood went to see Heathcliffs grave. It was next to Catherine Earnshaws.
