5G AND RADIO — Page 29

BY JAMES CARELESS

Relatively few Americans are aware of it, but the United States is home to many commercial/religious interna-tional broadcasters that transmit pro-gramming worldwide using analog shortwave radio transmitters. They are supported by an industry group called the National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters.

Unfortunately, analog shortwave radio transmissions are notorious for interference and signal dropouts. For listeners in other countries, the sound coming out of their shortwave radios lacks the superior audio range of domes-tic U.S. AM (yes, we said AM) and is often wracked with static and signal fading.

For years, NASB members have wanted to replace (or at least augment)

the poor audio quality of analog SW with the crystal-clear sound of digital SW radio, specifically the Digital Radio Mondiale standard developed in Europe that is now being used in China and India.

“DRM sounds very much like FM, with a wide audio range and no static,” said Charles Caudill, president emeritus of World Christian Broadcasting, owner/operator of U.S. SW station KNLS. “It is also consistent: Either the DRM sig-nal is received on your SW radio in full, or it isn’t. There’s no in-between.”

There are some DRM radios in use now, which is why some NASB mem-bers are offering limited DRM broad-casts alongside their regular analog SW transmissions.

“But the current generation of DRM SW receivers cost about $100 each,

FCC Commissioner Michael O’Rielly believes society is standing on the brink of a revolutionary 5G wireless technology that will gener-ate countless innovations and utterly change the way we work, play, com-municate and interact.

The commissioner said so at the Brooklyn 5G Summit this year, and

his raves about 5G didn’t surprise observers. Among many implications of 5G is a possible repurposing of the C-band in the United States. That’s the 500 MHz of spectrum (3.7 to 4.2 GHz) currently used by broadcasters who receive programming via satellite downlink earth stations. The FCC has proposed giving wireless companies some portion of the spectrum for 5G

orlando, fl—InfoComm is many things to many people. Depending on why they at-

tend the annual convocation, they might say it’s a digital signage show, a networking show, an installation show or something else. One thing

InfoComm most certainly is, however, is a magnet for AV industry movers and shakers across a variety of industries, all looking for solutions, op-portunities, education and connections. This year’s edi-tion, held in June in Orlan-do, provided all of that for attendees and more.

Filling the aisles of the ex-hibit floor and seats in the educational and networking sessions were 44,129 reg-istered attendees. Breaking down that number, 37 per-cent of InfoComm visitors

were attending for the first time, and 18 percent traveled to Florida from one of 117 represented countries.

“I think one of the as-pects that’s most exciting to me every year is the number of new attendees we have at the show,” said David La-buskes, CEO of AVIXA, the organization behind the Info-Comm conference. “There’s always going to be new tech-nologies, new protocols, new alliances and new exhibitors, but one of the greatest as-

T he deadline for Phase 4 of chan-nel repacking

in the FCC’s incentive auction has passed and it appears to have been the most chal-lenging one to date. This month I’ll outline

some of the Phase 4 experiences and lessons for future transitions, and pro-vide some tips on helping viewers with rescan and reception issues.

I was on the 90th floor of One World Trade Center in New York with the transmitters on Aug. 1 when many stations in Hartford, Conn., New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. transitioned to their new channels. The switch took place at 1 p.m., in the middle of the day and not at the 11:59 p.m. Aug. 2 deadline. Boston changed channels at 1:05 p.m. the next day.

Switching channels in the middle of the day has several advantages, the main one being more staff available to help resolve problems or answer view-ers’ calls. While the FCC set the phase deadlines on Friday just before mid-night, stations can transition anytime during the FCC test period before the deadline on the condition they provide proper public notice and coordinate with other stations.
