WSC ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT

As many of you know, in August our long-time president Jerry Bettenhausen announced his impending retirement. The WSC Board of Directors has since hired his successor, Mr. David Toogood. Mr. Toogood is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force stationed at Sheppard AFB where he serves as the US Senior National Representative to the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program. He received his bachelor’s degree from the US Air Force Academy, his Master’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and has served in the Air Force for over 21 years as an officer & combat fighter pilot.

WSC board member Gary Cardwell, who is the Chair of the WSC Succession Committee says, “After many interviews of excellent candidates, the Succession Committee feels that Mr. Toogood is the person to lead WSC into the future. He comes to WSC with an extensive military background and a proven record of directing complex operations. He has demonstrated an ability to interact and lead people with dignity and respect.”

Although Mr. Toogood won’t actually begin employment with WSC until January 2016, he wanted to share this message now:

“I’m honored and humbled to have been selected as the next president for WSC. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the company and I’m excited to become a part of it. My first priority is to get to know you—the dedicated men and women who make this company such a special place. After that, we’ll figure out what the next chapter in the company will look like. We have a great mission and I hope that we can grow to reach more people than ever before. Oh yeah, one last thing...to Heron, Annette, and Regina, the three employees I met at the bus stop on Sheppard last month...I got the job!”

Lee National Denim Day is a fundraiser created by Lee Jeans & the American Cancer Society in which participants donate money in exchange for wearing jeans to work. Since its creation in 1996, Lee National Denim Day participants have raised more than $93 million for the fight against breast cancer.

This year several WSC employees participated in the fundraiser and not only wore their jeans instead of their uniforms on October 2nd, but also showed off their team spirit. Special thanks to everyone who participated!

D EPARTMENT S POTLIGHT—M ULTI-C OUNTY L ITTER C REW

The WSC multi-county litter crew is a group of five employees who work on a TXDOT contract to keep area roadways clean. Shaun, Mason, Brandon, David and Annette work all year long on roads in four counties: Wichita, Clay, Archer and Wilbarger. Not only do they keep on schedule for the state of Texas, they also complete emergency clean-up jobs for local businesses and/or individuals. Crewmember David says he likes his job because he feels “it’s a way to give back to the community.” And Brandon has a message for everyone, too—he says, “Don’t littler!”

John Ridinger is an employee in the Paperclip factory at Armory Road. He has worked for WSC since February 2009. John is an active member of WSC’s advocacy group—he’s one of the authors of Don’t Say the ‘R’ Word—and has been a member of the Texas Advocates for over 20 years. John just had a birthday in October and to celebrate, he went to visit his sister in Dallas/Ft. Worth and ate at Ryan’s. When we asked him about his favorite part of his job, he said “making money!”

ADVOCACY NEWS

Continuing with the success of the advocacy group’s book, Don’t Say the ‘R’ Word, this past month they worked together and created an online version of the book. It is voiced by the authors themselves and is available on the WSC website & Facebook page. They did a wonderful job and wanted to share their story with everyone so even if you don’t have a copy of the book you can enjoy it online. In addition to the author’s version, there’s a second version voiced over by Melodi Bernal. Check it out!

T HANKSGIVING S AFETY T IPS

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we would like to invite you to have a wonderful and safe holiday this year with some of our common safety tips to help you along this year. Cook foods thoroughly. Turkey and stuffing should be cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 165°. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness, inserting it into both the innermost part of the thigh and

the thickest part of the breast. Don't partially cook a turkey the night before. Cook it continuously, without interruptions. Cook stuffing separately for maximum safety and to avoid overcooking your turkey. Thaw foods in the refrigerator or in cold water that is changed every 30 minutes. Never thaw foods at room temperature or in standing water, where bacteria multiply rapidly. When thawing a turkey in the refrigerator, allow one day for every 4 or 5 pounds. When thawing a turkey in cold water, allow 30 minutes for every pound. Other important facts to note are: Food left out for over four hours can be potentially hazardous, make sure to refrigerate leftovers quickly. Never buy dented cans from supermarkets as they can contain toxins and microorganisms. If you choose to deep fry a turkey make sure it is completely thawed.

Men’s Health Awareness Month is November and the Movember Foundation is inspiring people to donate, spread the word, and be active themselves in an effort to reduce health risks for men. Their big areas of focus are:

-Prostate Cancer

-Testicular Cancer

-Poor Mental Health

-Physical Inactivity

So this month if you want to grow a moustache to show your support feel free to. Just remember that November is MOVEmber, so stay active and see your doctor!
