1 | F O R M - F I N D I N G The study of atta vollenweideri ant nests as an ecological system became inspiration for the housing scheme design. Ant nests ex-tend deep into the underground with turrets at ground level. Tunnels branch out into “pods” which act as living spaces for the ants. The turrets serve as part of the ant hil l’s natural ventilation system. The stacking of the sand particles creates a porous structure that fi l ters wind deep into the large underground structure.

The photo opposite shows a selection of the first attempts of making physical models exploring the internal structure of the ant hil ls through different size “tunnels” and openings.

For the second at-tempt, the tunnels were dril led through wood blocks follow-ing a variety of routes. These were tested to see which routes were more effective in chan-neling wind.

Page 9: wsa_year2_term1 (Joanna Chow)

Below: Plan views of the routes that were dril led through wood blocks.

Page 10: wsa_year2_term1 (Joanna Chow)

The wood blocks were tested using incense that repre-sented wind. By observation it is able to deduce which of the routes were the most effective in channeling wind.
