ASIAN ARCHITECTURE PUBLIC SPACE IN URBAN ASIAedited by William SW Lim (Asian Urban Lab, Singapore)

Over the past few decades, rapid urbanisation has threatened to erode public space, especially in emerging economies. Market forces that prioritise profit generation are allowed to construct venues of consumption in its place. Though their physical appearance may resemble traditional public space, in reality, they are greatly restrictive and diminished in affordability, accessibility and social meaning. It is in this context that William SW Lim, chairman of Asian Urban Lab, has brought together architects, designers, historians, sociologists and urbanists from the region to discuss public space in selected Asian cities.

Readership: Graduate and undergraduate students majoring in architecture, urban planning, sociology and geography; general readers interested in cities, heritage and development; city planners, developers, policy makers and economists.

THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF DENG’S NANXUNBreakthrough in China’s Reform and Developmentby John Wong (East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore)

The first round of Deng Xiaoping’s reform resulted in high growth through the 1980s. However, it created a messy half-reformed economy with many problems, including the Tiananmen incident. The immediate aftermath of the Tiananmen was collapse of economic growth and reform deadlock. Being open and particularly dependent on trade with G-2, the Asian economy should have suffered greatly during the Great Recession. Yet, the region has performed remarkably well. The strength of domestic demand is only a part of the explanation. The other important part is rising economic integration, featured by, among others, growing intra-Asian trade and trade between Asia and other emerging market economies. This book argues that this trend is likely to continue even with the G-2 recovery, because it can provide better opportunities for a more balanced and sustainable development.

Readership: Undergraduate students in the field of international economics with a focus on Asian economies.

With Foreword by John Keane

The era of the Chinese leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao was one in which China became richer, more powerful, more prominent and more vexed. Furnished with a comprehensive introduction which sets out an assessment of where China was heading in the first and second decades of the 21st century, the essays encompass voices from the political elite, the migrant labourers and the complex patchwork of groups, people and interests that constitute a rising China whose influence is now felt across the world. Carnival China is a celebration of the confusion, dynamism and colour of China, presented through short essays which were written at the time key events happened and which capture and analyse the country’s contradictions and complexities.

RETHINKING CHINESE JURISPRUDENCE AND EXPLORING ITS FUTUREA Sociology of Knowledge Perspectiveby Zhenglai Deng (Fudan University, China)

This book is an antecedent study on the task facing China’s legal science, more strictly speaking — China’s legal philosophy, in post-Cold War world structure. The author believes that from 1978 to 2004, in spite of its great achievements, China’s legal science has at the same time had some of its grave problems of being exposed. A fundamental problem is its failure to provide a “Chinese legal ideal picture” as the standard of and direction for evaluating, assessing and guiding China’s law/legal development.

THE GREAT DRAGON FANTASYA Lacanian Analysis of Contemporary Chinese Thoughtby Guanjun Wu (East China Normal University, China)

“The Great Dragon Fantasy represents a fascinating and original application of Lacanian psychoanalytic precepts to the main currents of contemporary Chinese political thought: New Enlightenment, the New Left Wing (neo-Maoism), neo-Confucianism, and Chinese Nationalism. POLITICS AND TRADITIONAL CULTUREThe Political Use of Traditions in Contemporary Chinaby Janette Ai (The University of Melbourne, Australia)

This book examines the political use of China’s traditions by the party-state in contemporary China. It argues that the party-state has taken an official Marxist stance in terms of the political use of tradition. Besides looking at the official Marxist stance, this book also looks at critiques of the party-state’s use of traditions by the Liberalists and Neo-traditionalists. It also attempts to explore the reasons for the party’s use of Chinese traditions, the reasons for the party’s scepticism with regard to using Chinese traditions, and more importantly, the competition and/or cooperation between Marxists, Liberalists and Neo-traditionalists.

This book explores the development of the putting-out system in hand-woven textile industries in late Qing Dynasty and China’s Republican Period. In the context of Republican China, it was believed that this kind of household-based production system would have totally failed in competition with the factory system of machinery production. However, this book exhibits the historical fact that the putting-out system was booming in handcraft textile production and subsequently provides an explanation to this phenomenon from the perspectives of institutional analysis and quantitative modeling.

JAPAN CHRONICLES 2001 – 2012Towards a “Third Lost Decade”by Peng Er Lam (National University of Singapore)

In 1991, Japan’s “bubble” economy burst and the country was stuck in a quagmire for at least two decades. Domestically, Japan also suffered from political doldrums. Regionally, Japan was superseded by China.

This book argues that, with the exception of Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro, Japan was bedeviled by a chronically weak political leadership and unstable party system which made it difficult for fundamental problems to be resolved. Japan also has an ambivalent relationship with China, the one country whose burgeoning economy can lift the Japanese economy from its stagnation. Notwithstanding the “second lost decade”, there were interesting efforts by different leaders and parties to offer a way out for a Japan in distress. This book also examines the approaches they tried, and why they often failed.

Readership: Non-Japanese specialist laymen interested in Japan & East Asia in the 21st century.

How have Westerners seen the People’s Republic of China over the years? The question raises many important issues, which this book aims to present, analyze and explain. The basic conclusion is that Western perspectives are somewhat more complex than simply viewing China’s realities. Involved also are politics and power relations, trends in journalism and scholarship, as well as individual and group personalities and psychologies. The perspectives are taken up by topic, including politics, economy, society, and ethnic minorities.

CHINA DREAMS China’s New Leadership and Future Impactsedited by Chih-shian Liou & Arthur S Ding (National Chengchi University, Taiwan)

With the theme “China Dreams: Opportunities and Challenges,” This book contribute to emerging debates on Chinese new leadership’s adaptability on important political, economic, social, and global issues. Can China’s political system sustain “China Dreams,” a slogan ushered by Chinese President Xi Jinpin? Does the fulfillment of “China Dreams” require political reform? Does the initiation of the agenda of “China Dreams” facilitate China’s economic transition? To what extent do “China Dreams” pave the way for China’s peaceful rise? By exploring the preceding questions, the essays of Chih-shian Liou, Chin-fu Hung, Kellee S Tsai, Chung-min Tsai, Teresa Wright, Thomas Gold, Lowell Dittmer, Victoria Tin-bor Hui, and Scott L Kastner provide a comprehensive understanding of the agenda of China’s new leadership.

More than 11 years after the 9/11 attacks and 10 years after the October 2002 Bali bombings, the need for a comprehensive assessment of what the countries in Southeast Asia have achieved is overdue. The aim of this book is to make a comprehensive assessment of the threats of terrorism and extremism in the region and of the policies and practices adopted by the regional countries to counter the same. It is also necessary to evaluate if the region has become a safer place after the decade-long fight. Most importantly, it is time to ask if we need a rethink or develop a new strategy to contain and manage the threats of terrorism and extremism.

World Scientific Book Series in Asian Trade and Asian Economic Development ASIAN ENERGY AT THE CROSSROADSby David Roland-Holst & David Zilberman (University of California, Berkeley, USA)

In two centuries since the Industrial Revolution, energy-based technological change conferred living standards on Western economies that are beyond the imagination of their ancestors. Asia came later to industrialization, and it remains unequally distributed around the region. Rapid and sustained growth over the last generation, however, has begun a dramatic transition for this region. CHINA’S STATE-MANAGED MARKETIZATION APPROACH TO ENERGY SECURITYAn International Comparisonby Shaofeng Chen (Peking University, China)

While China’s oil security problem has disconcerted the Chinese government, it has also drawn world attention. What are China’s oil security perceptions? How and why has China adopted a state-managed marketization approach (SMMA) to oil security? And in what sense is China’s SMMA a divergence from the international practice? This book provides an in-depth study and a systematic analysis to these issues. Rather than merely sketching out China’s energy situation and countermeasures, this book expounds the motives behind those measures at great length, in comparison with other countries.

Readership: Graduates, academics and researchers who are interested in China’s policies and strategies in energy security issues.
