An outstanding translator should have different kinds of skills .


First is project management skills which are resource coordination, administration, quality management and added value services such as: Distributed Translation Processing

Using dictionaries, bookmarks, links and search engines are simple examples for

that .


Third is the language and literacy skills. They help the translator to understand the source language which result a good and meaningful translation, to increase the writing skills in the target language such as: editing, proof-reading, styling, word usage, selecting the proper

meaning and punctuating .


Fourth is communication skills like giving clear expressions, establishing rapport, giving and receiving feedback and

checking the audience understanding .


Fifth, a translator should have the ability of making decisions to help him to analyze and evaluate his translation, and establish facts that leads to good judgment making.


Sixth is the information technology (IT) skill which is the technical resources for translator as well as hardware and software equipment. For example, the electronic file management

Finally, he should have enough understanding of cultures, because of the cultural differences he may face while translating. He should know the national characteristics where the language is spoken, what influence the development of the source language and the hazards of stereotypes.


For example, the Indonesian word “babu-babu” which means nursemaids in English, and the words “pork” and “dinner-jacket” which can be found in English language but hard to find similar words to it in other languages.
