1. The father buys his son some cookies every week.
S /V / O/extra information
2. The school started last week on Sunday at 7:00 a.m.

3rd Worksheet – Question Formation
A statement is a sentence that tells you something.
A question is a sentence that asks you something.
A statement does not require an answer.
A question requires an answer. Questions are also known as
"interrogatives".
A written question in English always ends with a question mark: (?)
Question Types
There are three basic question types:
(Yes/No) questions: the answer is "yes or no"
(WH- questions): the answer is "information"
Choice questions: the answer is "in the question"
We look at these in more detail below.
(Yes/No) questions: Sometimes the only answer that we need is yes or no. Look at these examples:
auxiliary verb subject not
main verb
Answer: yes or no
Do you want dinner? Yes, I do. Can you drive? No, I can't. Has she not finished her
work? Yes, she has.
Did they go home? No, they didn't.

WH-questions: Sometimes we want more than yes or no for an answer. When asking for information, we usually place a question-word at the beginning of the sentence. The question-word indicates the information that we want, for example: where (place), when (time), why (reason), who (person). Look at these examples: *When the question-word is who, it acts as the subject. **In Present Simple and Past Simple tenses, there is no auxiliary verb with who.
Choice questions: Sometimes we give our listener a choice. We ask them to choose between two possible answers. So their answer is (usually) already in the question. Look at these examples:
auxiliary verb
subject main verb
or answer: in question
Do you want tea or coffee? Coffee, please.
Will we meet John or James? John.
question word
auxiliary verb
not subject main verb
answer:
information Where do you live? In Paris. When will we have lunch? At 1pm. Why has n't Tara done it? Because she
can't. Who(m) did she meet? She met Ram. Who* has run out? Ali has run out. Who** ran out? Ali ran out.

WRITING #1 Finish the story (1)
“The Great Find”
Directions: Read the story below. Then finish it with your own writing.
“Marcus, it’s time for you to get up!” my mom called as she pounded on my
bedroom door. I looked at the clock on my
dresser. It was six in the morning, and I was
very grumpy. I stayed up late writing a book
report last night and I did not go to sleep
until midnight.
“Okay Mom, I’ll be out in a minute,” I said. I got out of my bed and took a
quick shower. I got dressed and packed my books into my backpack.
“Marcus, you are going to be late!” Mom yelled up the stairs.
“I’m coming!” I yelled back. I hurried down the stairs. Mom handed me a
banana and a bagged lunch as I walked out the door.
As I was walking to the bus stop, I spotted a green piece of paper ahead of
me on the sidewalk. When I reached it, I picked it up and realized that it
was a twenty dollar bill! I looked around to see if any of my neighbors
were outside. There was no one in sight. I stuck the twenty dollar bill into
my back pocket and ran to the bus stop. I got there just as the bus was
arriving.
I got on the bus and sat in the second-to-last seat with my friend James.
“Hey, James. What’s up?” I said.
“Oh, nothing.” James said sadly. “What’s wrong?” I asked.
“My mom gave me twenty dollars to buy the soccer ball I wanted” he said.
“So…that’s great!” I exclaimed.
“Yeah, but I think I lost it. I can’t find it anywhere.” He replied.

WRITING # 1 Finish the story (2)
“Which Way?”
Directions: Read the story below. Then finish it
with your own writing.
“This weekend, I went on my first camping trip. I
went with my dad and my older brother, Sam. We left on Friday morning
and drove for four hours until we reached the mountains. I slept for most of
the ride, and Sam woke me up when we reached the park.
“Here we are!” he cheered. I opened my eyes and looked at the forest that
surrounded the parking lot. My dad unloaded our backpacks from the trunk
and we set off on the trail. We hiked for about three miles and I became very
hot and tired. We decided to stop and set up camp for the night. Sam found
a big flat spot in a grassy area away from the trail. My dad told Sam and me
to catch some fish for dinner from the nearby pond while he pitched our
tent. Sam had a special fishing pole that folded into a small size so he could
carry it in his backpack. He caught three trout in the pond and I caught two.
There were a lot of mosquitoes by the water so we didn’t stay at the pond
for too long. By the time we returned to our campsite, the sun was
beginning to set. My dad was relaxing in the tent, reading a book. We
showed him the fish that we caught and he told us that he was very proud of
us.
“Can you two gather some wood for the campfire so we can cook the fish?”
he asked us. “Sure!” I answered.
“Don’t forget your flashlights!” my dad warned. We grabbed our flashlights
from our backpacks and walked towards the trail.
“Which way should we go?” I asked Sam. The trail led in two different
directions. We were excited so we just started running down the trail. After
a little while, we gathered as much wood as we could hold. It was time to go
back to the camp site. It was getting dark and I didn’t want to get lost in the
middle of the woods! Sam pointed to the west. “We can either go back the
way that we came from, or we can go the other way. What do you think?”

4th Worksheet - Paraphrasing vs. Plagiarizing
When you take notes, you may summarize the information by writing only the
important ideas, or you may paraphrase the information by writing all the
ideas in your own words. These techniques help you avoid stealing another
writer’s words. Copying information word-for-word and presenting it as your
own is called plagiarism. Itis never all right to copy directly from another
writer without putting the passage in quotation marks and identifying the
writer.
Write a paraphrase for each of the following passages. Note the important ideas from the passage without copying phrases word-for-word.
1. In the days before incubators, chickens could not be hatched in the winter. Spring chickens fetched the highest prices in the summer. A dishonest vendor might try to pass off an older chicken as a fresher “spring” chicken. This is the source of the phrase no spring chicken, meaning past one’s prime.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Hitting your funny bone is anything but funny. So why the
humorous name? The reason is that the bone running from the shoulder to the elbow is called the humerus. Someone made a play on words and called it the funny bone. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

“What You Read”
Directions: Try to answer the question below.
Question: Have you read any good books lately? What kind of books do
you like best?
Example Answer: I really enjoy reading science fiction. Science fiction
stretches my imagination. The characters are usually ordinary people in
extraordinary circumstances. Although the situations are fictional, the
reactions of the characters are realistic. Science fiction is a different way of

Writing # 9 Summary Writing
A summary is a short and sweet retelling of a text. It only includes the most important details.
Use the writing strategy of “Summarizing” to help you write a short fiction summary!
Directions: Read the passage and write a short summary of 60 words.
The Other Side of the Wall (200 words)
A young woman inherited a beautiful garden from her grandmother. She loved
gardening too and was very proud of her garden. One day, she saw a very beautiful plant
in a catalog and wanted that for her garden. She ordered it and planted it at the base of
the stonewall in her backyard. She took great care of the plant, which grew quickly and
had beautiful green leaves on it.
Months passed, but not a single flower bloomed on the tree. Vexed, she almost wanted
to cut the tree down. At such a time, her neighbor called and said, “Thank you so much
for the beautiful flowers. You have no idea how much I enjoy looking at the blooms of
the vine you have planted”.
Hearing this, the young girl rushes to the neighbor’s side of the wall and sees the most
beautiful flower in bloom. All the care she took had paid off. Only the vine crept through
the crevices because of which it did not flower on her side of the wall but did generously
on the other side.
Moral: Just because you cannot see the good results of your efforts does not mean that it
bore no fruit.
