About the Workshop
Writing the Legal Thriller/Mystery for Lawyers Workshop
“‘The lawyer with the best story wins.’ How many times have you heard that? It is as true in publishing as it is in the courtroom.
Learn how to write Your Best Story—the legal thriller to die for—and how to create a main character who will make that story come alive on the page. We will also teach you what to do with that story once it is written, how to introduce your work to the publishing world of agents and editors in the most effective way possible. You can do it. We will show you how.”

Find Out Who (or Whom) . . . your hero or heroine must be to hook agents, editors and readers into your story and who your villain must (and must not) be to make him truly real and terrifying
Find Out How . . . to burst into your story and grab the reader in a death grip from the start, and to keep readers racing along your story line as if their lives depended on it

10:15 Writing From The Trenches
The successful thriller or mystery novel is deceptively effortless: We race through its pages eager for the resolu-tion. But the writing of these stories requires consummate skill—not to mention time and lots of hard work. In this nuts-and-bolts workshop, successful author Jeffery Deaver will offer an insider’s view of the realities of the writer’s life, along with valuable tips on how to get started or move ahead with projects of your own. You’ll learn how your legal background can jumpstart your writing career. And whether you’re dealing with procrastination or a knotty plot problem, you’ll leave inspired and energized, ready to take the next step.

12:30 Demystifying the Book Contract
Chances are you have never seen a publisher’s standard form contract. Be prepared for a shock: punitive is the modifier that best applies—punitive to the author, that is. When you see your first author’s contract, you will be sorely tempted to cross out almost every line in protest. That would be a grave error...you could destroy your relationship with your publisher. Instead, arm yourself with information about traditional practices, the changes that publishers are likely to accept and those they will categorically reject. Learn to tiptoe through the trip wires without getting your writerly limbs blown off, especially at the early stages of your career.

1:45 The Publishing Business: What You As a Writer Must Know
There are many unwritten rules in the publishing business. These rules determine whether a story and it characters are, or are not, salable in today’s demanding commercial publishing marketplace. Equally crucial unwritten rules govern the way you must approach and deal with book editors and literary agents if your goal is to be a winner in the publishing world. To succeed as an author, you must know these rules. You must understand the publishing business the way you understand the legal business. You must learn how the publishing business really works and how to make it really work for you. Alice Orr knows this territory well. She shares her insider insights with you and guides you toward becoming as savvy as you have to be in order to make your publishing dream come true.
