A powerful argument always considers the other side’s strongest point. The OBD is part of your introduction. It acknowledges the opposite point of view’s strongest point and dismisses it.

Ex: Even though people may like the convenience of going to a local school, JWJ provides students with experiences that make it worth driving across town to go to school.

(Example)

PROMPT:

The principal of your school is considering installing candy and soda machines in the cafeteria. Think about the reasons why the principal should or should not install candy and soda machines in the cafeteria.

Now write to convince your principal of your opinion on installing these machines.

Possible Introduction:

Over the past twenty years, obesity rates among children have quadrupled. Now, nearly 25 million children are overweight or obese. Two of the direct causes of this alarming epidemic are candy and soda machines. Even though installing candy and soda machines in the cafeteria could raise much needed funds for our school, we should not have them because the negative effects outweigh the possible positive ones. Installing these sugar shacks in our cafeteria is bad idea because they increase students’ weight, decrease their health, and create discipline problems.

Sample:Paragraph 1:

Citizens of Ember! Lend me your ears! It has come to my attention that there have been crimes committed against us! What are these crimes, you might ask? You have all been robbed! Now I know that some of you will blow this off as not being important, but I am telling you, it is of vital importance. Your leader, the mayor, and a fellow citizen, Looper, have been stealing supplies from us and hoarding them for themselves. This needs to stop because only one or two people should not have access to long-lost foods, and if it doesn’t stop, we will ALL run out of supplies.

Paragraph 2:It has come to my attention, thanks to Lina Mayfleet and Doon

Harrow, that the Mayor and Looper have been stealing and hoarding supplies. It is really not fair for one or two people only to have access to foods that have been long-ago depleted. For the Mayor, a person in power, to think this is okay is simply wrong and a crime against us, the citizens. Said Doon Harrow, “I saw a great big blob of a man with gray cheeks and a loose, purplish mouth sitting in a chair in a secret room in the Pipeworks. Upon closer inspection, I realized that it was Mayor Cole, and he was surrounded by all sorts of foods and supplies.” Lina Mayfleet also saw similar. “I was trying to catch up to my friend Lizzie, when she dropped some objects she was carrying. When I picked one up, I found that it was a long-ago depleted supply – peaches and creamed corn!” How is this fair, citizens of Ember? How is it okay for the Mayor and a few other people to have all of these wonderful and delicious things?

Paragraph 3:

After the report by Doon about the secret room, and after a recent report by Lizzie that the Storerooms were running low and empty, it became evident that stealing and hoarding is going to soon cause us all to run out of supplies. Apparently, when our city was built, it was only stocked for 200 or so years. Now we are going on year 250 or so and all of our supplies are running out, including food and our precious light bulbs. If one or two people are stealing and/or hoarding the supplies, that means that much fewer supplies that we, the citizens, have to spread among ourselves. Without supplies, our city, and us citizens, will surely perish. What can be done? One suggestion would be to have Mayor Cole and his fellow thieves arrested. The other suggestion is to have those people responsible for this injustice personally right their wrong. I believe that the supplies should be shared equally with all of the citizens of Ember, and it should be the responsibility of the mayor and his cohorts to do this. If we all can become unified and stand against this injustice, I believe that we can correct a grievous wrong against us all.
