#1: Napoleon Seizes Power
• In Oct. 1795, Napoleon’s fate was changed forever
• NB forces Royalist rebels to retreat, protects the National Convention
• The rebels retreated and Napoleon was hailed as the savior of the Republic
#2: Coup d’etat
• Coup d’etat: French for “blow to the state”, a sudden seizure of power
• Nov. 1799: Napoleon takes over government, surrounded the national legislature and drove out its members
• Government dissolved and replaced with new government with Napoleon at the head
#3: Napoleon the Consul
• In 1800, a vote by the people approve a new constitution which gave Napoleon all real power
• The people were desperate for strong leadership, tired of fighting

• Dec. 1804: Napoleon made himself emperor with Fr. Ppl’s support
• Crowned himself emperor, taking the crown from the Pope

• NB wanted to conquer all of Euro, took control of Netherlands, parts of Italy, and Switzerland
• Battle of Austerlitz (1805): NB defeated Russian, Prussian, & Austrian troops – helped build a large European empire
• Battle of Trafalgar (1805): Navel battle loss of NB, forced NB to stop invasion attempt of Brit.

blockading against Brit., decided to invade

• Russia troops used scorched-earth policy to burn Russian land to leave nothing for the enemy (NB) to eat
• NB turns back to Fr. in Oct., but Russian winter sets in – Russians attack and kill most of the Fr. army

• NB loses Battle of Leipzig in Oct. 1813 against Prussian and Russian armies
• Surrenders in Apr. 1814 and gives up throne of France
• Sent to Elba, island in the Mediterranean Sea

• Last bid for power in Europe
• NB escapes Elba and returns to rule France in March 1815
• French ppl are rejoicing his return, but Euro. Leaders upset with his return
• Battle of Waterloo (1815): last major battle for NB, major loss against British and Prussian troops
#9: Second Exile to St. Helena
• After Battle of Waterloo and escape from Elba, Brit. troops send NB to St. Helena for exile in 1815
• NB dies in 1821 of stomach cancer (probably)

• On the top of the “flap”, you will put the name of the event and the date it happened.
• Under the “flap”, you will write a sentence summary of the event and a sentence on why this event is important to the rise/fall of NB rule over France

• NB (Napoleon) established a national bank and set up efficient and fair taxes
• NB fired corrupt gov’t officials and trained new officials in lycees (government-run public schools)
• Promoted sound financial management and better control of the economy
#11: Napoleonic Code
• Napoleonic Code was a system of laws established under Napoleon
• Gave the country a uniform set of laws and eliminated many injustices
• TPS: How does the Napoleonic Code promote the ideals of the FR?
• Limited liberty and promoted order & authority over indiv. rights
#12: Saint Domingue (Haiti)
• Enslaved Africans in French colonies of Haiti wanted freedom as well and civil war broke out
• In 1801 NB decided to take back the colony, but was unsuccessful
• In1803 he sold all of the Louisiana Purchase to America for $15 mil.
#13: Continental System
• Nov. 1806: NB set up a blockade (forcible closing of ports) against Brit. to stop trade and communication
• Main goals: 1) Wanted to make Euro. more self-sufficient & 2) Weaken Brit. Economy

#14: The Peninsular War
• 1808: NB invaded Spain and removed the Sp. king
• Sp. ppl attacked Fr. troops – used guerrilla warfare tactics to defeat NB
• NB suffered great losses in Sp. – birth of nationalism (pride and loyalty to one’s own country) in Euro.
