Notes From The Board

"Spirit of the living God, fall fresh upon yourChurch ... help us remember and give thanks for our blessings.Help us honor our mothers and fathers in faith who built this, your Church. Make new our commitment to speak and act onyour truth. Inspire our leaders to faithfully serve. Give us theenergy and strength so your Church may flourish. Prosper ourwork to your glory. "

This prayer is inspired by our UCC prayer for the NewYear.

Thank you Lord for the inclement weather! The snowand rain are beautiful. The thirsty soil will now be replenished.Winter wheat lying dormant will soon begin to sprout. Themountains beckon to all who enjoy the snow.

Our Religious Education Committee is reviewing ourSunday school program; and is considering changing the timewhich our children meet to before or after our Church service. If you have any thoughts on this, please contact Amy Linkert,or any member of the committee.

Please plan to attend our Congregational meeting onJanuary 29. We want and need your input as we seek tofinalize the budget for 2012. We will also install the Officersand Committee Chairs. If you are able and willing to serve ona committee this would be an excellent time to volunteer.

We have much to be thankful for, and by ourthankfulness we will receive ever greater abundance.

Will Patterson, Board Chair

NEWS FROM AND FOR THE CONGREGATION

--Welcometo our newest members, HUGH ANDMARY GEISLER, who reaffirmedtheir faith and transferred their membership here from Saint Stephen's United Church ofChrist in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Mary and Hugh, both retired, recently moved here fromtheir longtime home in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to be close to their son andfamily. Hugh worked many years all over the Middle Atlantic States in tire sales anddistribution. Mary was, at various times, a teacher, a museum director, and a churchsecretary. They bring a long history of faith and church involvement to Wright, and wewelcomethem with much love!

--Our love to Diane Broom and Adam Broom upon the death of their mother andgrandmother, GLORIA OSGOOD, on January 15. Gloria, a nearly lifelong resident of theBoise Bench, had been a member of Wright Church since 1992, and continued to befaithfully involveduntil failing health prevented her participation a few years ago. She wasa loving, positive woman all her life and we all mourn her passing. Mike presided at herMemorial Service on January 20.

--Also,we are saddened by the passing of our dear friend FAYE FRY. As most ofyou know, she and her late husband Frank were faithful, deeply involved members of ourcongregation from 1979 through 2005, when they moved "back home" to their nativePennsylvania. After Frank's death last year, Faye returned to Boise to be near herdaughter and son-in-law, Carole and Eddie Boyer, and granddaughter Sara. Faye wasalways a gentle and loving lady, whose smiles and caring demeanor touched us all. Formore information about her long, good life, go to aldenwaggoner.com to read her obituary.Mike officiated at her Memorial Service on January 26. She will be buried next to Frankat the cemetery in their hometown of New Bloomfield,PA.

--Take a look at the display at the entrance to the Social Hall prepared byScholarship Committee Chair Carol Card. On it are such interesting letters from all ourcollege students who are receiving DeBeaumont Scholarships from the church, describingtheir studies and their plans for the future.

--Be sure to be here with us this Sunday, January 29, for worship--and afterwardsfor the Annual Congregational Meeting, during which we will install our newly-elected2012 Church Officers, Committee Chairs, and Deacons. It is important for all of us to bepresent and make our voicesheard.

--And thanks again to all who so generously contributed to our Bench CommunitySupper Fund! Altogether more than $750 was raised-almost enough to underwrite thisimportant project through the end of 2012!

--And finally, as someone has written: "Let it be said by our children's children thatwhen we were tested, we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did wefalter; and with ~es fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth thosegreat gifts of faith, hope, and love, and delivered them safely tofuture generations. Pilgrim Cove Foundation Board Report fv0111/Ca¥~vcwvSlyke,.PCF Board» M0Wtbev

At our meeting on January 14 the board wrestled with several issues. A major part ofour discussion was addressing the concerns raised by a letter that Board President KenAndersen sent to the Idaho Assn. churches last December. These concerns centeredon the issue of the UCC camps being customers of Pilgrim Cove, just as other users ofPilgrim Cove; on the cost for UCC campers to attend camp; and the cost for the CampDirector and staff to attend and manage camps. UCC campers will be charged adiscounted per day charge from other users.

At the request of the CPC Educational Taskforce the PC Camp was ask to providealternative (June) dates for the Sojourners and Explorers camps so that youth couldattend a national youth event in July. This issue is being decided at a taskforce meetingon January 21 ..

The need for better communication between the PCF Board and the Idaho Assn.Churches was discussed. Board minutes will be sent to all Churches. A contact personat each Church will be ask to get the correct information out to the congregation. Tothis end I am working on establishing a Pilgrim Cove Bulletin Board (part of existingone) at Wright.

Wright Church was well represented at the Pilgrim Cove Reunion dinner and programfollowing the Board meeting on January 14. Approximately 35 people were inattendance, almost 50% from Wright. We enjoyed a camp style dinner prepared byChef John Warren, a program about where the camp is going, and stories of many whohad attended camp at Pilgrim Cove.

FROM THE TREASURERJanice Aagaard

Thanks to all of you this past year for your contributions and support. Although weended the year with a negative balance (-$3,892.83), it was better than had been projectedby the budget-and we met all our obligations.

Now we are starting a new year with a balanced budget, and we already have anunexpected expense looming: The church dishwasher has expired (after 35-40 years), andcannot be revived. A new dishwasher will cost in the neighborhood of $4,000. TheWomen's Fellowship has pledged $3,000 toward the purchase of a new dishwasher, but weare still short by almost $1,000.

So, in order to keep our budget in the black, we once again are asking thecongregation to help with anything you can to meet this expense. Because we serve thecommunity, we are required to have a commercial dishwasher with a sterilization cycle. This impacts our serving the Community Suppers, as well as the use by BUGS, both part ofour church's mission. These are in addition to all the other times we prepare meals as acongregation or by the various individual groups. As always, thanks in advance for yourconsideration and generosity!

LENTEN STUDY SERIES BEGINS FEBRUARY 23THURSDAYS, 10:30AM - YOUTH ROOM

We continue our 17-year tradition of Lenten Studies beginning on Thursday,February 23, at 10:30 AM, and continuing for 7 weeks through Maundy Thursday, April 5.The focus of this year's study is James Moore's latest book, "/ Hear Voices-And That's aGOOD Thing!" Cost of the books is only $10.

All of us are guided by the voices of people in our lives--grandparents, parents, teachers, pastors, friends, etc. Their words are woven into our life's fabric and influencehow we live and the choices we make. As Christians, we are blessed also to hear theamazing voices of those who lived centuries ag~the voices found in Scripture. The greatauthor Rev. James W. Moore--whose wonderful books we have enjoyed several times-says: "When faced with choices and decisions, when trying to sort out priorities, or whenneeding a word of assurance, I hear the voice of Jesus, I hear the voice of Mary, I hear thevoices of Abraham and Esther and Moses and the apostle Paul and many other biblicalvoices whispering (or shouting!) to me powerful words that shape and direct my life."

I hope many of you will join us on Thursday mornings as we celebrate the voices ofthe Bible who continue, every day, to strengthen and encourage us when we not only hear, but listen to them.

(A couple notes: If you want to be part of the class, please let me know within thenext 10 days or so--so that I can order the necessary quantity of books. Also, I'd be willingto add an evening session, if we could get, say, a minimum of six people who couldn'tattend the morning class. Give me a call if you are one of those. Thanks-Mike)

THE JOY CHAPMAN ACADEMYINMODING, KENYA!

As you all know, our Sister in Christ, Joy Chapman, who passed away just over ayear ago, was one of the most faithful, kind, and generous people we've ever known.Another example of that devotion and generosity has come to light: The following is anexcerpt from an email sent to Dale and Betty Ramsey from Wayne and Pat Chapman,Joy's son and daughter-in-law, who now live in Cascade:

"We are so excited to share with you what has been happening with our dearfriends, SossyPeter Omukule and his wife Evalyn. We met them in 2003 when we had theprivilege of doing a ministry retreat in Kenya. Upon returning from Kenya, we sharedwith Joy, Wayne's mom, about the people there. She was especially moved by the fact thatthey had no water in their village, and had to travel several miles on bicycles with largejugs to bring water back. Joy said she knew what it was like to be without running water, and wanted to send funds to have a well dug. Due to her generosity, a well was dug andwater was brought to their village of Apokor. Their gratitude was so great that when theywanted to start a school, they asked if they could name it after Joy. Thus, THE JOYCHAPMANACADEMYcame into being!"

Wayne and Pat's letter goeson to describe how, trusting God to provide, the villageschool has continued to be built, starting with one teacher, eight students, and four sewingmachines taking up residence in their church building. When notified by the localauthorities that a school would have to be built separate from the church building, theypersevered, one step at a time, to complete this project.

As 2012 began, the Joy Chapman Academy now has a total of 48 students, nineteachers, a sewing instructor, and classes that run from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM each day. There are many more children needing education, but for now, they are at their capacity.Their prayerful hope is to add a new classroom each year as the children advance in theirstudies-with the additional needs for more desks, books, and supplies.

What a wonderful testimony to Joy's great faith! If you would like to know moreabout the Joy Chapman Academy and its future-or how you can help-contact Wayneand Pat at 208-890-6509,or email [email protected].
