Upcoming Games Following tonight's game with Northern Kentucky, the Raiders entertain Bellarmine College Wednesday night in the annual "Fairborn Night" game. Coach Joe Reibel's Knights wi ll be looking for revenge when they visit the Physical Ed ucation Building. Wright State defeated the Knights 85-76 in Louisville in December. Bellarmine is still in contention for a postseason Great Lakes Regional Tournament berth and a win over the number one team in the nation would certainly go a long way in building the Bellarmine cause. Rodney Benson led the Wright State attack in the first Bellarmine game with 19

Tonight's Game

Wright State vs. Northern Kentucky

Coach Ralph Underhill's Wright State Raiders enter tonight's contest against Northern Kentucky as the nation's number one NCAA Division II team. It marks the second straight week that the Raiders have been voted at the top of the heap of the best Division II basketball teams in the country.

Wright State will be favored to knock off the Norse from Northern Kentucky tonight, but when you have the nation's number one team, everyone is shooting for you. The Raiders and the Norse have been involved in several outstanding games over the years. Wright State has won ten of the fifteen games between the two schools including a pair of wins last season. One of the games last season against Northern , the one played in Highland Heights, marked the Raiders' best overall performance of the campaign. Wright State blitzed the Norse, 116-66, in an awesome display of basketball .

Northern Kentucky coach Mike Beitzel is in his first year at the Norse helm after taking over for Mote Hils, who began the Northern basketball program. Beitzel 's team brings a 4-7 record into the Physical Education Building. Their most recent outing was a 50-49 loss to Indiana Central in Indianapolis. Northern played well at Indiana Central despite not having the services of leading scorer Mike Hofmeyer and several other players who were serving a two-game suspension for participating in a non-sanctioned summer league. The Norse wins have come over Kentucky State, Oakland, Spring Hill, and Oakland City

Expected to start tonight for Beitzel are Hofmeyer (13.5 ppg., 7.6 rpg.) and 6-3 sophomore Brady Jackson (11.8 ppg,

4.2 rpg .) as the forwards ; 6-5 sophomore Steve Jesse (7.8 ppg., 7.0 rpg .) at center, and 6-3 senior Roger Ryan (7.6 ppg.) and sophomore Steve Pollock (3.5 ppg .) as the guards. Northern Kentucky is scoring an average of 66.9 points per game while giving up an average of 73.5.

Wright State continues to be led by senior forward Rodney Benson who turned in another stellar performance last Monday against Central State at the University of Dayton Arena. The 6-6 left-hander scored 29 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and nailed down the victory with a powerful slam dunk late in the game. Benson's runningmate at forward , senior Roman Welch, had his best game against Central State, scoring 19 points and playing toug h defense on Marauder star Eric Love, holding Love to a 8-20 shooting night from the field.

Benson entered Wednesday's game at St. Joseph's with a 21 .5 per game average while Welch has improved his mark to 15.5 per outing. Also averag ing in double figures for coach Ralph Underhill's top-ranked Raiders are senior guard Eddie Crowe at 12.3 and senior center Steve Hartings at 10.3. Seniors Keith Miller and Jeff Bragg are sharing the other guard spot and are contributing almost 14 points per game with Bragg averaging 7.0 and Miller putting in 6.9 points per contest.

The Wright State defense has been improving steadily. The Raiders have held their last four opponents to 67 points or under. For the season, WSU opponents are averaging 68 points per game while the Raiders are firing in an average 87 points per outing. The Raiders entered the St. Joseph's game with the longest winning streak among the Division II teams in the nation. Wright State was 12-0 going into the contest with the Pumas.

Two other teams from the Great Lakes Region made the NCAA Division II top fifteen in the second week of the rating. Indiana State-Evansville was the number five team for the second week in a row and Western Illinois was listed as the number thirteen team after having been in the twelfth position last week.

NCAA Division II Poll 1. Wright State 12-0 2 Mt. St. Mary's 11-0 3. New Hampshire 8-1 4. Puget Sound 10-2 5. Indiana State-Evansvi lle 11-2 6. Central Florida 10-2 7. Central Missouri 8-2 8. West Georgia 10-0 9. Chapman 12-3
